Class Teach #1 Lesson Plan: “Lightly Row,” Part A

Lexie Rowland

I. Objective

The students will learn to perform Part A from the “Lightly Row” duet in Essential
Elements for Strings, Book 1.

II. Procedure

The students will:


Answer the following questions:
What is the highest pitch you play?
What is the lowest pitch you play?
What sharps/flats do you need to remember to play?
How many strings do you play on?
What do the square and v symbols above some of the notes mean?
Sing the pitches while the teacher demonstrates on pizzicato.
Demonstrate proper pizzicato hand position.
What part of the finger plucks the string?
Perform the song on pizzicato.
Reflect on their performance and make suggestions for improvement.
Perform the song on pizzicato again.
Demonstrate proper bow holding technique.
Perform the piece on arco.
Reflect on what went well or needs improvement, as well as the improvement
from the first performance of the piece.

III. Assessment

Assessment will be informal and based on ability to demonstrate accurate notes and
rhythms. The teacher will listen as the students play, and provide active feedback. The
students will also provide feedback through their reflections on the performances.

This lesson will satisfy the following standards as outlined in the Music Standards of
Learning for Virginia Public Schools, Elementary Instrumental Music:
