Chapter 1
Background of the study

Introduction

Technological gadgets have influenced and altered the way individuals live in
this generation. Technologies like gadgets have made the life of the people more
`knowledgeable and comfortable. There is anyone who has not been altered by
the improvements in today’s technology and computers. Transport,
communication, and education have been significantly created from technological
advances in today’s civilization. Youth is the most vulnerable cluster among the
population to be passionate about technology. Within the year whatever
electronic gadgets do not seem to be fully recognized like computers students do
not seem to be nonetheless engaged in activities using technologies. Students
depend on books and visiting library facilities to review, browse their notes and
review their lessons.

Learning is interwoven into and across student’s everyday life activities.

Technology that is used to support learning should be integrated with everyday
life; seamlessly. Mobile technologies, with their reduced size and ease of use,
provide the potential to extend student’s learning spaces and enrich the learning
experiences in their daily lives where they move between locations, switch from
one topic or context to one another. (Wenli Chan, et al, 2010).

According to Sundus M (2018), technology has been proven to be very helpful

in educating the student. Children can access educational websites and can get
detailed information about the required topic. Technology makes things better as
they have access to the pile of material and can be very useful in research and
understanding things better. Visual presentations, educational videos, interactive
programs, learning tutorial and a variety of books available all the time on the
internet has revolutionized education in a better way. Kids learn state of the art
tools and methods on their own. Educational games help children to perform well
in their studies. As they can have many online quizzes available, online tutorials
and brainstorming riddles.

According to Espinosa J.P (2016), “ the Philippines should not be left behind
when it comes to applying educational technology. The ethical and responsible
use of computers, tablets, cellphones, and other devices can greatly enhance the
learning capability of students, for it has been shown through studies that
children and young adults can better grasp and understand their lessons in a
more relaxed environment, without the prying eyes of classmates or teachers”.

While students see technology as an important factor in their learning, they fail
to appreciate the extent of its application in their education. Their level of
satisfaction on technology use is high no matter how limited the availability and
use of technology in their school is. They still lack the awareness of the use of
technology as an aid to understanding science and mathematics concepts. On
the other hand, science teachers’ notion of 21st-century technology and software
applications in the classroom is primarily about personal gadgets like laptops,
tablets, smart phones, computers, and touch screen devices. They also
recognize the limited use of technology in their schools and hardly consider
computer software as technology for science. They expressed their need for
training on modern science laboratory instruments and access to modern
technology primarily personal computers and other electronic gadgets. They
believe that the schools have limited means for technology-integrated curriculum
because of lack of access to electronic gadgets ( Limjap, A., Santos, G. et al
2017).

Based on the study made by the Ateneo De Davao University (2014), in the
field of education, students of all generations are equipped with books and
writing materials as their way to learn and make the mark. But as time changes,
the emergence of new technology changed the way classroom lives. It is
because of touch screen devices which forever changed the learning standards
of the students. This is a study that identifies the gap between the book and the
touch screen device called a tablet. A touch screen device is a computer display
screen that is also an input device.

This study will be conducted at Davao Wisdom Academy, F. Torres Street.

The participants will be the junior high school students of this school year 2019-
2020.

gadgets more freely and additionally to guide them in Utilizing the gadgets.
School Administrator, they will able to approve this study that might included in
school policy. Re: the utilization of gadgets within the classroom.
Future Researchers, this study might facilitate future analyzers on their own
research. They will widen the scope of their own study or improve this analysis
study also to serve as a guide to their future strategy to conduct another study.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the Distributed cognition Theory. In Distributed

Cognition Theory, the student is afforded additional power. In other words, it is a
student-centered approach to learning wherever the learners participate in a very
systematically designed learning setting that supports interaction among its
participants (Bell & Winn, 2000). This theory promotes learning in an
exceedingly community of learners or a system where interaction takes place. it
is through this interaction where cognition happens. Distributed cognition needs
sharing of cognitive activity among the parts and participants of this method,
which may be people or tools like devices, technologies or media. These
participants distribute their knowledge among different learners and physical or
digital tools by externally representing their information. At times, by using these
tools, a little bit of the data would possibly persist with the user, this is often called
cognitive residue. it is through interaction with different members and tools that
progress learning. Therefore communication among all participants is dominant
in importance (Bell & Winn, 2000).
The role of technology among this theory is a useful part of the system within
which the learners are interacting. This interaction will either facilitate to distribute
their knowledge, off-load bound amounts of psychological feature work creating
the cognitive load less and or facilitate to scaffold new capabilities (Bell &
Winn, 2000). For instance, mistreatment of a camera to require a photo allows
longer to learn rather than writing it on a notebook. Also, in this theory,
technology (gadgets) are often used to facilitate extend human capabilities. As an
example, calculator often used to solve scientific discipline problem quickly
instead of finding it manually. These gadgets help students to form their learning
more efficient. Another example of this is often taken from a case study that was
conducted using artificial intelligence to provide resolution problem skills. in this
case study, students were placed into little collaborative teams and were asked to
construct a mechanism, using Lego set Mind storm for faculties kits, which might
perform various tasks. The teams were introduced to a tool referred to as a
flowchart. They used these flowcharts to map the programming directions they
might provide the robot to finish the given task. This allowed them to off-load a
number of the cognitive work to the flowchart so, through its use, they were able
to solve tougher problems (Chambers et al., 2007)

This learning theory supports the very skills required by the 21st century.
Learners who are placed into a learning setting supported this theory would
be using their “knowledge and skills—
by thinking critically, applying information to new things, analyzing data,
comprehending new concepts, communication, collaborating, finding professional
structures, creating decisions” (Honey et al.,
2003).

Conceptual Framework
The researchers used Independent variable- Dependent variable paradigm
format, wherein the frequency of gadget utilization is the independent variable
because it will affect the corresponding dependent variable which is the learning
interest of Junior High School students.

CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
INTRODUCTION

Maintaining a neat and well-organized environment is the most challenging

aspects in creating a conducive environment to the learning and cooperation of
students . Based on C Development Africa Incorporated (2019), every child
deserves to learn in a conducive learning environment that poses no threat to
their health, safety and enhances learning outcomes and academic performance.
This is not in Nigeria where promising, less privileged students are subjective to
poor, hazardous and difficult learning conditions due to inadequate infrastructure.
The overwhelming student population makes it almost impossible for government
alone to meet these needs without support from the students and and every
school as well.

To Martin and Sass (2010), classroom management is considered an

umbrella term for teacher actions to manage class, students behavior and their
active learning. These actions encompass works like establishing order, dealing
with misbehavior, offering appropriate instruction, and taking care of students
emotional and cognitive needs. Maintains that “producing a high rate of work
involvement and low rate of deviancy in academic setting” effectively define
classroom management issues. It considers that dealing with different students
behavior in different situation needs various classroom strategies.

According to ( Baldez, 2018) teaching is self-sacrificing profession but full of

excitement. However, teaching continuously upgraded and modified to meet the
individual needs of the learners and at the same time keep abreast to the modern
world. In this study, factors that affect the teaching performance of biology
teachers aurora Zambonagadel Sur were surveyed. Fifteen (15) biology teachers
from the different Senior high schools purposively selected and participated the
study. Using a descriptive survey research design, survey questionnaire, informal
interview and ocular inspection of the school were the process involved in data
gathering. Variable investigation confined into two main categories; the teacher
profile and the school profile, and how these profiles affect the biology teachers
performance. Based on the analysis of data, findings revealed the biology
teachers are not all graduated in a biology/Science courses, eligible, has very
satisfactory teaching performance, but limited professional growth and training.
For the profile, results revealed that the school have adequate book supplies,
poor laboratory equipment, average class size and classroom size. Results
further showed that field of specialization, books, laboratory equipment, and
training are significantly correlated to the teachers teaching performance in
biology. Thus, it is recommended that school facilities and teachers professional
growth is given priority by the Department of Education in order to provide a
continuous quality graduates. Replication of this study to other municipality could
be conducted at assess the status of the profile of the teachers and the school as
needs assessment analysis.

Future researchers, They will able to have knowledge and various ideas from
the present researchers.

Statement of the problem

1. What is the level of satistification of grade 12 learners towards their learning

environment?

2. What is the level of development does the grade 12 students learning

environment affects their academic performances?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the learning environment and the

grade 12 students involvement in school activities of Davao Wisdom Academy?

Null hypothesis

This study will employ null hypothesis which are tested at 0.05 level of
significance:
Ho: There is no significant difference between the learning environment and
grade 12 students involvement in school activities of Davao Wisdom Academy

Theoretical Framework

According to (Matthew,[Link],2016) who study the relationship between school

organizational contexts, teacher turnover, and student achievement in New York
City middle schools, that learning environment play a significant role in students
success. Most educators have suspected this for decades and now showing that
schools can potentially lift student achievement by improving their learning
environment.

(Eric, [Link], 2016) supported that, it is widely believed that teacher turnover
adversely affects the quality of instruction in urban schools serving predominantly
disadvantaged children, and a growing body of research investigates various
components of turnover effects.

(Jullie, [Link], 2016) continued that a harsh teacher evaluation system in a

large urban school district affects the quality composition of the teacher
turnovers. With the implementation of the new system, the researchers document
increased turnover among the most effective teachers and decreased turnover
among the most effective teachers, relative in the middle of the distribution. The
researchers finding demonstrated that the alignment between personnel
decisions and teacher effectiveness can be improved through targeted personnel
policies. However, the change in the composition of exiters brought on by the
policy the researchers studied is too small to meaningfully impact student
achievement.
