Born in Guerrero, Mexico, Gloria has lived a life of “firsts” since her arrival to the United States
in 1995, trekking at the forefront of educational access for undocumented students in the Unit-
ed States. She was the first student from Santa Ana High School to attend Harvard College and Dean of Students Office
later became the first undocumented student to obtain a Masters of Education from the Har-
vard Graduate School of Education. In 2017, she also became the first undocumented student to
obtain a PhD in Education Policy, Evaluation, and Reform from the Claremont Graduate School Latinx & Latin American Studies Minor
of Education. Part of her educational journey was captured in the 2010 “Almost American”
documentary, which examined her post-college options in the era before the Deferred Action
for Childhood Arrivals Program, better known as DACA. Latinx Staff & Faculty Forum
Gloria’s professional experience includes ten years of non-profit grant writing, program man-
agement, and consulting. She currently serves as a grant writer at the AltaMed Health Services’
Musco Center for the Arts
Institute for Health Equity; an adjunct at the Claremont Graduate University; a consultant for
The LGBT Center OC, Latino Health Access, and the Westerly School; and a partner at A-Z Techs
LLC, where she oversees the company’s Human Relations Department. Gloria was also an Office of Diversity & Inclusion
inaugural instructor at the Claremont Graduate University’s Allies of Dreamers program, the
first program of its kind in the United States dedicated to training school faculty, staff, and ad-
ministration on supporting and working with undocumented students from pre-K to graduate Undocumented Student Issues Forum
school. She has provided technical assistance and trainings to more than 15 public and private
colleges throughout the United States seeking to build a more diverse and inclusive campus.
The driving force behind her work is a firm commitment to social justice and equitable access
to opportunity, to ensure that although she has been the first to reach various milestones, she
won’t be the last.
