ABSTRACT
This report contains the details of an
Internship Program conducted by
Students of Msc Mathematics Semester
III. The internship was conducted for 180
hours where the students visited St
Francis Girls High School. The idea of the
internship was to enable us to explore
the realms of teaching.
Day 1:
This was the first day of your internship where in we are going to teach
students of 7th and 9th classes [Link] one of us was given a
class to teach mathematics for one month where in we were asked to
complete 3 chapters from their syllabus.
Bindu, Prathyusha,Swetha were allotted 7th class when they were
asked to teach Integers, Fractions, Decimals and Rational
numbers,Simple [Link], Swapna, Sana and Arunima were
given 8th class where the portion included Rational numbers, algebraic
expression .Sneha, Aamena ,Bindu Babu and I were given 9th class
where in the portion was Real numbers,Polynomials and Factorisation
and Lines and Angles.
We were all super excited to teach them and a bit nervous as it was our
first time to teach so many students at [Link] we had a glimpse of
what we are going to face before as we worked for a week in a
government school as a part of our Outreach Program so it was not that
nerve wracking for us to handle students.
The school starts at 8:45 in the morning with an [Link] were all
there before time and waiting for the call. We were introduced to the
students in the assembly as new teachers who would teach 7th,8th,9th
classes mathematics for a [Link] the students were surprised to see
so many new teachers.
After the assembly ,we were given a separate staff room so that we
would feel [Link] that we were all given a time table which we were
asked to follow.I was allotted 9th A and my class was in the second
[Link] my classes were usually in the [Link] seeing this I was
really happy that children would have a clear mind in the morning and
would learn in a better way.
As it was 9:40 I started off to my class , and on the way I met Mira
Kumari ma'am who was the class teacher of my class and Math teacher
of 9th A.I introduce myself and informed the purpose for which we
were [Link] was really welcoming and gave me a few tips for
handling the students and also added that her students were really
good and I told me that I wouldn't face any problem teaching them.
As we enter the class there was no one in the class, then I came to
know that they would have mass PT every first hour of Monday. Mira
Kumari Ma'am and I waited for the students to come and settle down,
students were really excited to see their new teacher.
After they have all settled down and got ready for the class ma'am
introduced me to the student as the new maths teacher and then asked
me to continue. I gave the students a brief introduction about myself
and said the purpose for which I was here.I felt that the students had
many questions but didn't ask me anything but their faces seemed
welcoming.
I started my class with an introduction to real numbers, explained what
are the different numbers that are natural numbers, whole numbers,
integers, rational numbers and finally the real numbers.
I give a brief of what the lesson would include and what they are going
to learn the coming [Link] a students had already learnt and had an
idea of real numbers in the previous classes. They answered all the
questions in a fast pace. The bell rang and I didn't feel that I was there
in the class for 40 minutes teaching 60 odd students with the teacher
beside me. The class was really warm and welcoming.
As the bell rang, students wished me and I left the class fully content
happy and super excited to go and share my experience with my pears.
DAY 2:
Next day I had my class in the first period, so I went to the class at 8:45
before the start of the assembly. After the assembly Priest came on
rounds and gave the blessings. Then I was told by my student that every
tuesday father would come and bless each [Link] the assembly and
prayer I was asked by Mera kumari maam to start my class.I asked
students to give me a few numbers and then categorised them into
different [Link] the students were totally involved and were really
excited to categorise them into different groups.I ask students to define
the various type of numbers and few students got up and give few
definitions.I give the proper definition of each number that is the
Natural number,Whole number,Integers,Rational numbers and Irrational
numbers and a few examples for each [Link] I asked students to put a
few more numbers into each set, students tried for a while and then
recognise that the natural numbers by subset of the whole numbers
which when the subset of integers which was a subset of rational
[Link] I explained that the combination of rational numbers and
irrational numbers are real numbers which is a [Link] we did a few
problems and ended the class for the day.
Day 3:
This was Saturday at school. I went to the class in the morning ,students
were really excited to see me and I was also excited to teach them
whatever I know the best way. I give a brief recap of the previous class
and explain how to represent a rational number on the number line.
Then Igive a few problems which were not in the textbook and then
asked the students to solve it .They tried to do it and asked a few
students to do it on the board, meanwhile I went to each student and
asked to justify my explanation whether it was clear or not.
Then explained the main methods of finding the numbers between two
rational numbers. There were two methods of finding the numbers so
explained both the method to students and later gave them homework
and asked them to use which ever method define easy to solve the
problem.
Day 4:
Next day I started off by explaining the second exercise that is 1.1 and
asked the students to try it by themselves in class. So that I would know
whether the students are able to understand what I am teaching or not.
Then I realized that almost all of them were able to solve the problems,
but only a few of them faced some difficulty. So I decided to show
special interest on them and help them individually for detailed
understanding.
I explained each and every method carefully to the students, mean
while others tried to solve the problems of exercise. I asked them to
find any other method. With this I ended my class and asked the
students to come to the staff room if they have any doubts.I came back
to staff room and there I and my friends shared all our experiences with
each other about how are the teachers, there names, how are the
students in the class, how well we explained, and so on our day ended in
that way sharing our experiences.
Day 5:
This friday I give the students in brief recap of the previous classes and
what we learned till [Link] started section 1.2 which was irrational
numbers. Students gave the definition of the rational numbers and a
few examples of irrational numbers
The first method in the section was to convert rational numbers into
decimal values using long division method. Started off with the basics
that is finding root 2 value.I tried to explain the best possible way and
the way in which students would understand the process in a better
way. It took quite a long time for me to explain but I made a point that
each and every student understand the method [Link] coming to
a conclusion that all the student has a clear understanding of the
process of converting a rational numbers to decimal values by long
division method. After explaining I asked the students to find the value
of root 3 with that I came to know that the students were able to
understand the process clearly.
After finding root 2 and root 3 values on the board I asked the student
to find the values of root 5 and root 7 as homework. Student started off
by finding root 5 value in the class meanwhile I was clearing the doubts
of students [Link] the next class I asked the students to get
their own geometry box, which we would be using in the next class to
represent irrational numbers on the number line.
Mira Kumari ma'am was very impressed by the way I was teaching and
how I took care about each student individually. After the class she said
the same to me and I was really happy to hear her words.
Day 6:
Our topic for that day was representing irrational numbers on the
number line, students were really excited to learn the method and used
geometry box. Then explained what a number line is and how to find
the value of rational numbers using Pythagoras theorem on the number
line. For this I tried to make the class more interesting and told story
about Pythagoras and where he got the idea from. Story goes on like
this Pythagoras was trying to climb the wall of certain height using a
ladder and wanted to know and find the length of the ladder which he
needed to climb the wall. In this way I got the attention of the students
and student got to know the real life application of Pythagoras
theorem.
Later I showed how we can make use of Pythagoras theorem and find
the value of irrational number without actually using the long division
method to the students. I started off by giving them the steps of
construction and represent root 2 on the number line. students then
compared this value to the value of root 3 which we found using the
long division method and were able to see that both the values were
almost the same. I said that by using long division method we can find
the value of irrational numbers up to a specific decimal value by using
Pythagoras theorem and on the number line we can find only upto 1
decimal value and asked all the students to find root 5 and root 7 values
and give them a few tips of how to find the value of root 5 and root
[Link] the class, I returned to my staff room sharing how my class
went for the day. As we are assigned only 2 hours per day and so we
had a lot of time in the school. We used to prepare for our next class,
what to teach, how better ways can we approach students, and so
[Link] the school has an assembly in the morning, they also have a
prayer before leaving the school. So we also joined in the prayer and
along with others, we left the school
Day 7:
On Monday the topic was real numbers so I started off by explaining the
combination of both rational and irrational numbers together is real
numbers which was a topic for the chapter.
In this topic we tried to multiply two irrational numbers and trying to
find whether the product of two irrational numbers is an irrational
number or not We started exercise 1.2 ,explained how to find whether a
given number is a rational or irrational number and whether the
product sum and difference is will give as rational or irrational numbers.
I and the students tried solving the exercises in the class itself. Time has
passed and bell rang, so my class ended the day in this way. And so I
returned to my staff room.
Day 8:
I explained students how to represent numbers on the number line
through successive magnification. In this process we draw a number
line with integers in the first step then magnified the required range so
that we get the number line with a single decimal value and continued
the process until the required number is marked on the number line.
Students found really easy to mark the decimal values on the number
line. I then started of the next topic that was operations on the real
numbers that is addition, subtraction, multiplication of real numbers. In
this topic we were asked to apply the basic mathematical operations
like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on different
rational or irrational numbers and find whether the resultant is a
rational or irrational number. In this topic we had a few properties so I
give the student the list of formulas and we tried to use his formulas
and found out the results of the problems. This topic was really
interesting and all the students were able to understand. After my class
I returned to my staff room and then after some discussion, it was
afternoon so we had our lunch. We our classmates shared our teaching
experiences and also cleared our doubts if any. So it was then 4pm so
we had a prayer and finally left the school.
Day 9:
The next topic was to rationalize the denominator, for this we actually
need to know what rationalising factor is. This process is to convert the
denominator which is a rational number into a rational number. For this
process we need to first find the rationalising factor of the denominator,
multiply the given number with the rationalising in the numerator and
denominator. Then the resultant would not contain an irrational
number in the denominator and we can find an irrational number in the
numerator. Students really founded difficult to understand what is
rationling factor is and how do we use it.
we did a few exercises and exampled problems on the same topic so
that students would get a clear understanding of the topic. I tried to
give the students more and more example so that they get a better
understanding we also completed the exercise problems on the related
topic.
Day 10:
The next topic was law of exponents for real numbers under this topic
we had to recall all the laws of the exponents ,so I give the student the
list of the formulas which we were going to use to solve the problems.I
gave the students a few examples regarding this topic and asked the
students to use the exponential loss to solve these problems. We
continued the topic and started exercise 1.4 wear the exercise
problems were really interesting and easy to solve .
As I completed the chapter I was asked by Meera Kumari ma'am to
conduct an exam on [Link] I told the students what the portion
would be and this exam would be for 10 marks which they would
consider as their FA and then discussed the date for [Link] we were
free for the rest of the time, we all were assigned to go to other classes
where in the teachers of that class were absent. So I was 10A for
substitution. There the students were surprised seeing me and asked
me what is the perpose of my presence. Students felt free after our
conversation and had a small chitchat. They asked my personal info and
felt me as a friend. Bell rang then left the class with a bye.
Day 11:
As I thought of conducting an exam tomorrow I thought of giving the
students a brief recap of whatever that was taught in the chapter "real
numbers".I tried to explain all the topics that I have explain before in
this chapter. First we started with the long division method followed by
presenting real number on the number line through successive
magnification, then again I explain the students what are rational lysing
factor is and how we use it when an irrational number is in the
[Link] was totally a brushing up session and students for
preparing for their exam. Students came up to me with all their doubts
With this I came to know that students felt really free to ask me doubts
rather than their teacher so that I can explain them in a better way in
which they could understand. As usual I came back to staff room,we
then had our lunch all together sharing our lunch boxes with each
other. I again had another class, so continued our class. Fully tired I
returned back and then took some rest for myself. It was time for us to
leave so we left the school with a prayer.
Day 12:
This day was scheduled for the examination which would be conducted
for 10 marks. I prepared the question paper in such a way that it would
include all the methods that we have learnt in the chapter. The first
question was to find the value of root 3long division method up to four
decimal values which was for 2 marks. second question was to locate
root 5 on the number line which was also given for 2 marks. Then I give
a few questions on multiplication of two rational numbers and ask them
to find whether the resultant is a rational or irrational number. Next
question was to simplify a given number where we had an irrational
number in the denominator. The last question was what was the what is
the national rising factor of the given numbers.
I felt that this set of questions would cover the entire chapter and so I
showed it to my teacher. She gave a positive response and told me to
continue my test. I wrote all the questions on the board and asked them
to solve in there FA books. Students wrote the exam [Link] rang so I
took there books for correction.
Day 13:
I corrected their exam papers and was really happy that many of the
students were able to understand what I explain and their did really
excellent in their exam. Many students scored 10 out of 10.I was also
able to find a few mistakes where many students were making, so I try
to explain what the correct method is and asked the students to find
out where they went wrong and to correct their methods.
Next chapters name was Polynomials and Factorisation. This topic
basically contained what polynomials really are and how we can use
them to find the value of one or two variables.
I first explain what polynomials are really are and what it means by
polynomials in one variable. The next topic was degree of a polynomial I
explain the students what a degree really means and there were a few
exercise problems where in we were asked to find the degree of the
given polynomials and to find out the coefficient of the given variable.
Then I explain the students what is zero polynomial, Constant
polynomial, a Linear Polynomial, a Quadratic Polynomial and the Cubic
polynomial are.i give the definition of each type of polynomial and a
few examples for each of them. Then I gave the students a few
polynomial and then ask them to categorise and find out whether the
polynomials are Zero, Constant, Linear, Quadratic and Cubic
Polynomials. Then I gave the students a few polynomial and then ask
them to categorise and find out whether the polynomials are Zero,
Constant, Linear, Quadratic and Cubic polynomials. Then I give the
students a homework to find out a few other examples of each of the
different types of polynomials.I asked the students to get at least three
examples for each of the different types of polynomials based on the
degree of the polynomial.
Day 14:
The next day I give a brief recap of what polynomials are and how we
categorise a given polynomial depending upon the degree of a
polynomial. Then I explain how we can categorise a polynomial
depending upon the number of non zero terms. By categorising the
polynomials depending upon the number of non zero terms we were
able to define a Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial and Multinomial. I give
the definition of Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial Multinomial and
example for each type of PolynomiaI . I give a few set of polynomials
and ask the students to categorise them into sets of Monomial,
Binomial, Trinomial and Multinomial . Later I asked students to get at
least three examples for each type of a polynomial and that we would
discuss them in the next class.
Next day we started exercise 2.1 in which the problems were all related
to the degree of the polynomial, coefficient of a given variable and to
categorise the given set of polynomials into Linear, Quadratic and cubic
polynomials .There was a question in which we were asked to check
whether the statement was true or false I asked the students to answer
true or false and also justify the answer.
Day 15:
Our next topic was to find the zeros of the polynomial which means we
have to find the value of x for which the polynomial is equal to zero.
Give the students multiple examples to show them what really a zero of
a polynomial means. There was also a method in which the X value was
given and we need to find the value of the given polynomial. I asked the
students to give me a polynomial and I showed them how to find the
value of the given polynomial if the value of the variable is given.
There were many set of problems this helped the students to get a
better understanding of the topic. I came to know that all the students
were going to have a Retreat for 3 days which was conducted by the
school and there would be no classes for those three days so I was
asked to give homework so that students could do it in these 3 days. I
give the students a few polynomials and ask them to find the zero of
the polynomials. I give them a set of polynomials and the value of the
variable and then ask to find them the value of the polynomial using
this using the value of the variable.
Day 16:
After a long gap of three days I was really excited to meet the students
and wanted to know what they have learnt in the retreat. The student
said that the Retreat was really entertaining and also value based and
they really enjoyed the speech of the priest. They also said how they
danced enjoyed and sang in the [Link] all were really excited to
explain how they really enjoyed the retreat.
I started off with my next topic, division of polynomials in which we
were giving a quadratic polynomial and a linear polynomial and asked
to divide and find the reminder which would also be a polynomial.
Explain the students how a quadratic polynomial is divided by a linear
polynomial. But the students faced problem in understanding the
method , so I decided to be more slow and clear so that everyone could
understand. I continued and give them multiple example so that they
could understand. I give them a few polynomials and ask them to divide
it with x- 2 and find the reminder.
I understood that this topic was going over their head so I decided to
stop the class for today and said them that I would continue it on
Monday.
Day 17:
On Monday I started division of polynomials again so that students
would understand the topic in a better way. Students now understood
what I was explaining and were able to answer all the questions. I give
them a few examples and ask them to solve them in the class. I was
really happy to find out that all of them were able to solve the problem
and find the remainder. then I give the students what a reminder
theorem is and how we are going to use it to find the zero of the
polynomial. I showed the students how we can find the reminder of the
polynomials using the division method and by using the remainder
theorem. And we also found out how we can use remainder theorem
to find the zeros of the polynomial.
Then we continued with exercise 2.3 where we use both the remainder
theorem and the division method to find the reminder of the given
polynomials. I tried to solve all the problems and give the students
homework so that they could get a better understanding of the topic
and ask them to come back if they have any doubts.
Day 18:
Our next topic was factorization of the given polynomial. Explain the
statement of factor theorem and give the proof of the theorem. We did
a few factorisation problems where in I give a polynomial and asked the
students to factorise it. The exercise problems were really interesting.
We did most of the problems in the class . I asked the students to solve
all the problems in their books and then I picked up students and ask
them to solve the problem on the board so that in this way girls could
check whether their answer is correct or not and whether there
method is correct or not.
After the class I asked the students to submit their class works so that I
could correct their books and would be able to check if there were
writing any mistakes. I was really happy to see that all the class works
work complete and they also completed their homework which ever I
gave them to do. The class works were really neat and I was asked by
Mira Kumari mam to evaluate the class works for two and a half marks
which would be considered for their FA.
I return the books back to the students by the end of the day so that
they could complete the homework which I gave them that day. I came
to know that the school management would send their parents the list
of homework that the student Have to complete. I thought this was a
good practice so that the parents will know what the students are being
taught in the class. They were also a few other practices in the school
which I liked that is children were not allowed to give chocolates on
their birthdays but were asked to give pens so that their players could
use them rather than chocolates.
Day 19:
And our next topic was algebraic identities where in we had a few
identities which we were asked to use and find out the factors of a
given polynomial. We did a few example problems and I selected of you
example, exercise problem so that the students could do them as
homework and would come back and ask me any doubt if they had.
I came to know that the school management would send their parents
the list of homework that the student Have to complete. I thought this
was a good practice so that the parents will know what the students are
being taught in the class. They were also a few other practices in the
school which I liked that is children were not allowed to give chocolates
on their birthdays but were asked to give pens so that their players
could use them rather than chocolates.
Day 20:
The next day we continued with the exercise and example problems
under factorization of polynomials topic. I decided to conduct a test on
this topic so I ask the students to prepare for the test under these topics
and that I would conduct this exam for 10 marks and this would be
added for their FA. I asked to students if they had any doubts and the
students well really free to ask me the doubts. As one of the teacher
was absent I was given substitution for the same class I utilise this time
to cure all the doubts regarding the topic which they had for the
examination.
When I was explaining to the students I noticed that many of them had
similar doubts so explain it on the board and asked them if they were
able to understand. The students now felt that the topic was more clear.
As i thought of conducting and examination the next day I ask the
students to start the preparation now itself.
We completed all the example and exercise problems from the chapter
polynomials and factorisation. I made it a point that each and every
student understood the topic really clearly.
Day 21:
On the next day I came to know that there class teacher meera kumari
ma'am give a project for them to complete. Students had a few doubts
regarding this so they ask me to explain how the project would be and
help them in completing the project. Then ask the students to prepare
for the examination which would be conducted the next day. Students
came up with few doubts I clear them.
The day I was given substitution to class 10 B where the students were
really excited to see me and know about me. I told them the purpose
for which I was here I said that I was here for an internship and would
be leaving in a week. I have seen many students preparing paper bags
and ask them for what purpose they were making those paperbacks
they said that those paper bags for their project. It was really nice to
see and find out that the school was doing it students to go eco friendly
and use paper bags. I was also told that students were not allowed to
get plastic packed snacks to school. I felt that this school was doing a
good part in increasing its students to go eco friendly and use only eco
friendly goods to the school.
In the next period I conductor the exams on polynomial and
factorization. Student did really well in there examination sign the eye
was really contrnded to see the paper. Examination was conducted for
10 most and I was really happy to see that most of the students score
10 on 10.
But they were a few mistakes where the students had to correct them
selves so explain the students their mistakes individual so they could
understand where's they were going wrong.
This was the last day of my internship in St Francis school so I told the
students that i would not be coming from tomorrow. Students felt really
sad on hearing this. Few girls came up to me and told how they enjoyed
my teaching and how they felt really comfortable in asking there
doubts. But totally it was the very good experiment for me.
