Chapter 1
Introduction
Background of the Study
Discrimination is an act of unfairly or prejudicial treating from other people and groups
based on characteristics. Discrimination is “Treating a person unfairly based on their
characteristics” (Equality Act 2010). Discrimination especially to those people being part of
(LGBT Community), this act can kill a person’s mentally, physically, and even dignity of a
person’s part of LGBT. “Being discriminate is much more impacting on lesbian and gay’s mental
health and well being “(Meyer & Frost, 2013).
Suicide is a complex phenomenon, with social, cultural, and psychological dimensions.
Suicide ideation and attempted suicide are serious concerns among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) populations (Haas et al., 2011; Poteat & Rivers, 2014; Pflum, Venema,

deep and lasting harm and curtail students right to education, protected (under Philippine &
international law).
There are four main types of discrimination that are important in schools; direct and
indirect discrimination, harassment and victimization. Direct discrimination in school is when a
child is treated less favourably on the grounds of gender, disability, race, sexual orientation,
religious belief or age. While Indirect discrimination is when policies or practices affect a certain
group of children more than others for no good reason. Harassment can occur when a engages in
unwanted conduct related to a disability which has the purpose or effect of violating a pupil’s
dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for
the pupil. While the Victimization occurs when a school does something which is disadvantageous
to a pupil because either the pupil or the pupil’s parent or sibling takes, or is thought to be about
to take, action under disability discrimination law (Equality Act 2010; Stephensons).
Diverse gender and sexuality of students in a public high school is capable of damaging
the person’s lives, this kind of discrimination creating a mental illness, depression, and can cause
killing themselves.
