Valery Legasov: Chernobyl's Unsung Hero

Valery Legasov was a Soviet scientist who played a key role in investigating the causes and aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. As the first deputy director of the Kurchatov Institute, he truthfully reported on the severity of the accident to the International Atomic Energy Agency, risking criticism from the Soviet government. Legasov suggested immediately evacuating the nearby city of Pripyat to prevent radiation exposure and led efforts to minimize the spread of radiation across Europe. Plagued by depression from radiation exposure and the human costs of the accident, Legasov tragically committed suicide in 1988, just two years after Chernobyl.

fressing in Winter , reaching temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius below zero , the winter in this city is
very long during the year , but in the summer the weather is sunny, reaching temperatures of 30 or 32
degrees Celsius , this marked difference in temperatures between seasons is given by the continentality

he was born on september 1th 1936 , He was a prominent Soviet scientist in the field of inorganic
chemistry, a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union.

When the Chernobyl accident occurred on April 26, 1986, Valeri Legásov was the First Deputy Director
of the Kurchátov Institute , He was a key member of the government commission created to investigate
the causes of the accident

He was an honest person


In August 1986, he presented the report of the Soviet delegation at the extraordinary meeting of the
International Atomic Energy Agency, held in Vienna, on the Chernobyl accident. The report was
absolutely honest in terms of the severity of the accident, something that bothered the Soviet
government; finally the report presented at the meeting was very softened.18 Because of this he
suffered the veto in 1986 and 1987 under the title of Hero of Socialist Labor
He was a very responsible person
He suggested the immediate evacuation of the city of Prípiat, to prevent people from getting sick from
radiation, risking his life by being at the scene of the explosion, shortening his life.
He was a leader person
He led the delegation in charge of minimizing the degree of radiation so that it did not spread throughout
Europe

ruefully He committed suicide in 1988, just two years after the chernobyl accident , the victim of a
depression caused by radiation exposure, the lack of international recognition of the catastrophe and
the loss of human lives in the work to minimize the effects of the accident, added to that the files he left
hidden where he tells the interns of the matter would give more curiosity and intrigue to the public and
the scientists.
