Discharge Coefficient Comparison of Notches

This document presents an experimental study comparing the discharge coefficients of three different notch types: rectangular, V-shaped, and trapezoidal. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the relationship between head and discharge for each notch. The discharge was measured over a range of heads from maximum to minimum flow. Tables and graphs show the recorded head and discharge coefficient (Cd) values. The results show that Cd values generally increase with head for V-notches and trapezoidal notches, but may decrease after a certain head is reached depending on the notch type. The study concludes that notch type and dimensions affect discharge, and accurate Cd values are required for hydraulic structure design.

1. Introduction

In the fields of Hydraulics, Environment, Irrigation and

Chemical engineering, Notches are most widely used as
flow measuring/flow control devices. Conventional
rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal notches are among
the oldest notches. In particular, triangular notches are
very accurate to measure low flow discharges in
laboratories. Rectangular notches and Triangular notches
are often used in water supply, wastewater and sewage
systems. They consist of a sharp edged plate with a
rectangular, triangular or v-notch profile for the water
flow. There are many uses of notches, Mill ponds are
