World Architecture Day 2017 Events

The document provides narrative reports from an architecture student describing two events held for World Architecture Day - a tree planting activity and a music festival called ArkiChella. The tree planting took place in the hills of Barangay Aclan, Nasipit, Agusan Del Norte in coordination with DENR and CENRO Nasipit. Students trekked uphill to plant seedlings then enjoyed snacks on the return trip. ArkiChella was held at the Grand Palace Hotel to celebrate the end of the semester. Students arrived in bohemian outfits and participated in games before enjoying a buffet dinner and relaxing by the pool.

NARRATIVE REPORTS

NAME OF ACTIVITY: WAD TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY

DATE: October 7, 2017

LOCATION: Barangay Aclan, Nasipit, ADN

OBJECTIVES: To host an activity that is in line with the UAP National’s theme
for the celebration of World Architecture Day, as well as to
raise a sense of goodwill and environmental awareness
within the architecture students of SJIT.

NARRATIVE REPORT:

Written by: Fritz Patrick Y. Villanueva

The tree planting activity was planned upon by the officers of UAPSA and was
originally a part of the 3-day World Architecture Day activities, along with the Don
Gaudencio Elementary School Community Outreach and ArkiChella Music Fest. The
plan was then shortened only to the Tree Planting Activity and ArkiChella Music Fest due
to budget constraints, and the Community Outreach was moved to a later date.

The activity was done in coordination with Region XII DENR and CENRO Nasipit,
and was set to occur in the steep hills of Barangay Aclan, Nasipit, Agusan Del Norte.

The participants of the events, mainly architecture students with a few

engineering students thrown in the mix, started gathering around the gates of SJIT as
early as 4:30 in the morning. By half past 5:00 am, almost all of the participants were
already present and were just awaiting the arrival of the school bus, which arrived at
about 6:00 am, more or less and proceeded to transport the students to the craggy
hilltops of Barangay Aclan.

The students started trekking the initially grassy terrain at about approximately 7:30
am after filling out their attendance forms and forming a partner-system. The participants
crossed small above-ankle deep streams, grassy landscapes, and eventually craggy,
steep and treacherous rocky terrains to reach a wide expanse of flat land above a
hilltop, in which the tree planting took place.

Despite being tired from the trek upwards the hill, the students planted the
seedlings with smiling faces, with a laughter bursting occasionally here and there.

The tree planting activity ended at about 9:00 am, with some of the students, after
planting all of the seedlings issued to them, began trekking down back to the starting
point. Despite a few of the students already hurrying down to the starting point to get
some water to drink, some students made their way down in a leisurely manner, and took
in the surrounding landscape while taking pictures. Some of the students even stayed
back in the planting site for a while, taking pictures of the beautiful sky and horizon, as
the planting grounds are a well-known site for panaads during the Lenten season (as
evident with the crosses planted everywhere).
The returning architecture students were then given snacks and water to drink by
the UAPSA officers who stayed behind, and happily posed for pictures for one of our
event’s sponsors: Nature’s Spring Drinking Water.

The students who only then and there felt the tiredness catching up to them,
slumped back in the seats of the schoolbus and proceeded to doze off peacefully. As
the vehicle’s engine whirred to life, the students content with the work they have done
for the day had no problem sleeping. And slept they did, peacefully, until they reached
their destinations.
NARRATIVE REPORTS

NAME OF ACTIVITY: ARKICHELLA

DATE: October 8, 2017

LOCATION: Grand Palace Hotel and Inland Resort

OBJECTIVES: To properly cap off and provide and eventful culmination to

the World Architecture Day’s events that preceded that day,
as well as to properly end the semester with a sense of
goodwill and camaraderie between the architecture
students of SJIT.

NARRATIVE REPORT:

Written by: Fritz Patrick Y. Villanueva

October 8, a Sunday, was set to be a big night for the Architecture Students of
SJIT, as they geared up for a first-time event to be hosted by UAPSA, the ArkiChella
Acquaintance and Music Fest.

The ArkiChella was originally set to primarily be an Acquaintance party for the
architecture students of SJIT, and was slated to premiere during the last week of July, but
due to budget constraints and insufficient funds gathered from sponsors, the event was
moved to coincide with the World Architecture Day celebration.

The event began at approximately 1pm, as students arrived in their stunning

Coachella and bohemian-inspired outfits, slowly filling the seats surrounding Grand
Palace Hotel’s poolside area. While waiting for the dinner buffet to be served at 4pm, a
sort of informal program took place, where various parlor games were played, including
a contest where the students were divided into 3 groups and made to present a yelling
chant. Cash prizes were given to the winners of these games.

As the clock hit 4:00, people lined up for the food and left the buffet bar in a sorry
state, as they devoured and gobbled up the food served to them. One can only hope
that the staff at Grand Palace prepared for such a thing to happen. With over 50+
people in attendance, add that to the fact that these people were tired from playing
games around the pool all afternoon, and the food was absolutely delicious.
Additional games were played later on while some students were just lazily
soaking around the pool, unwinding after a tiring week before and bracing for a tiring
week ahead. Some students were also busy playing their own games in another corner
of the pool, while some took occasional trips back to the buffet station.

By half past 8:00 some of the students had begun changing back to their dry
clothes, and had begun packing their bags. By 9:00 pm the pool was completely void
of architecture students, save for some other pool-goers still enjoying the water. The
UAPSA officers that were left had begun packing the tarpaulins and photo-booths that
were hung up at the start of the event.

Overall, the event was a huge success, with architecture students praising the
choice of venue, particularly the unlimited food choice, and the ambiance of the pool
side. Most of the students also praised the lack of a formal program, and enjoyed the
laid-back vibe of the event where students were just left to bathe in the pool and play
their own games, something to keep in mind for future events.
