Understanding Magnetic Relays and Logic

A magnetic relay is an electromagnetic switch that uses a small electric current to turn on or off a larger electric current. It contains an electromagnet coil that becomes magnetized when electric current flows through it. Ladder diagrams are used to document industrial control logic systems and resemble a ladder, with vertical power rails and horizontal rungs representing control circuits. Logic gates are basic building blocks of digital circuits that have two inputs and one output, representing either a high or low binary state. Ladder logic diagrams illustrate how different input states of push buttons or sensors control the on/off state of relays and loads.

MAGNETIC RELAY

WHAT IS MAGNETIC RELAY?
A relay is an
electromagnetic switch
operated by a relatively
small electric current that
can turn on or off a much
larger electric current. The
heart of a relay is an
electromagnet (a coil of
wire that becomes a
temporary magnet when
electricity flows through
it).

LADDER DIAGRAM
• Ladder diagrams are
specialized schematics
commonly used to
document industrial
control logic systems.
They are called
“ladder” diagrams becaus
e they resemble a ladder,
with two vertical rails
(supply power) and as
many “rungs” (horizontal
lines) as there are control
circuits to represent.
LOGIC GATES
• A LOGIC GATES is an
elementary building
block of a digital circuit.
Most logic gates have
two inputs and one
output. At any given
moment, every terminal
is in one of the two
binary conditions low
(0) or high (1),
represented by different
voltage levels.
