INTERCONNECT
APPROACHES

INTERFACE and INTERCONNECT
A typical system consists of a number of master and slave devices connected together through some
form of interconnect, as shown in figure below
WHAT IS AN INTERFACE
The AXI protocol provides a single interface definition for describing interfaces:
• between a master and the interconnect
• between a slave and the interconnect
• between a master and a slave.
WHAT IS AN INTERCONNECT
The interconnect between devices is equivalent to another device with
symmetrical master and slave ports to which real master and slave devices can be
connected
Most systems use one of three interconnect approaches:
1. Shared address and data buses (SASD)
2. Shared address buses and multiple data buses (SAMD)
3. Multilayer, with multiple address and data buses (MAMD)
SHARED ADDRESS AND DATA BUS
SHARED ADDRESS AND MULTIPLE DATA BUS
MULTIPLE ADDRESS AND MULTIPLE DATA BUS
WHICH IS MORE BENEFICIAL
Depends on bandwidth requirements:
● Little Bandwidth for both address and data - SASD
● Little Bandwidth for address and high Bandwidth for data - SAMD
● High Bandwidth for both address and data - MAMD
Most of the systems implement SAMD achieving balance in between performance
and interconnect complexity
