Disadvantages of Illegal Drug Use

Using illegal drugs can negatively impact both physical and mental health in several ways: 1. Prolonged drug use can damage nearly every organ in the body and common side effects include a weakened immune system, cardiovascular issues, and liver/kidney damage. 2. Drugs interfere with neurotransmitter signaling in the brain which can impact functions like motivation, stress response, decision making, and impulse control. 3. Both short and long-term drug use is linked to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and onset of conditions like psychosis or schizophrenia, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Introduction

Illegal drugs are compound and chemicals that are addicting and can cause advent effects
to the human physiology. Hence, these are prohibited and controlled by the government. A drug
by definition, is any chemical that affects the human body or mind when it is consumed in any
way. Most illegal drugs are psychoactive drug which affects the brain. In the Philippines, there are
many types of these like methamphetamine (shabu), ecstasy, cocaine, heroines, marijuana
(cannabis) etc. The use of illegal drugs have numerous disadvantage and greatly impacts on a
person’s body
The Effects of Drug Addiction, the sad truth is that more deaths, illnesses, and disabilities
are caused by substance abuse than by any other preventable health condition. Prolonged drug
dependence interferes with just about every organ in the human body, and while different drugs
have different damaging effects. The Effects of Drugs to Mind, Drugs interfere with the way
neurons send, receive, and process signals via neurotransmitters. Some drugs such marijuana and
heroin, can activate neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural
neurotransmitter in the body. The Short-term effects of drugs on mental health, All psychoactive
drugs may cause mental health problems while you are taking them and as you clear the drug from
your body. These can include anxiety, mood swings, depression, sleep problems and psychosis.
And also the Short-term effect of drugs on mental health, Psychoactive drugs may cause you
ongoing mental health problems. It is not clear why this happens to some people and not others. It
may be that using a drug has triggered a mental illness you didn’t know you had, or the drug
changes the way a certain chemical affects your brain functions. Here are some of the ways that
different drugs can affect your mental health:

We conduct this topic because we want to know the disadvantage of using illegal drugs
to our body. We all know the number of using drugs are increasing. The latest survey, conducted
in December 2018, showed that 66 percent of Filipinos claimed that the number of drug addicts in
their area has decreased over the past year. Mindanao, at 83 percent, has the highest percentage of
people who answered there are less drug addicts in their area compared to last year, followed by
the Visayas at 71 percent, Metro Manila at 67 percent, and Balance Luzon at 54 percent. A total
of 68 percent of respondents in rural areas believe the number of illegal drug addicts decreased
while 63 percent say the same in urban areas. The survey also found that 87 percent of Filipinos
believe it is important for the police to capture illegal drug suspects alive. The survey was
conducted from December 16 to 19 last year, with 1,440 respondents and a margin of error of ±2.6
percent.
The Effects of Drug Addiction, the sad truth is that more deaths, illnesses, and disabilities
are caused by substance abuse than by any other preventable health condition. Prolonged drug
dependence interferes with just about every organ in the human body, and while different drugs
have different damaging effects, these are some of the common conditions substance abuse can
cause: Damaged immune system, which increase susceptibility to infection. Marijuana,There are
a number of animal models that suggest that chronic use of cannabis products may be associated
with decreased immune system functioning; however, these findings are less clear in adult humans.
However, it is safe to conclude that children and adolescents who use cannabis products regularly
most likely do experience suppressed immune system functioning. Cardiovascular conditions,
including heart attacks and collapsed veins, The powdered form of cocaine is either inhaled
through the nose (snorted) and absorbed through nasal tissue, or dissolved in water and injected
into the bloodstream. Crack is a form of cocaine that has been processed to make a rock crystal
that can be [Link] so-called recreational cocaine users may have higher blood pressure,
stiffer arteries and thicker heart muscle walls than non-users — all of which can cause a heart
attack.

The Effects of Drugs to Mind, Drugs interfere with the way neurons send, receive,
and process signals via neurotransmitters. Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, can
activate neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural neurotransmitter in
the body. This allows the drugs to attach onto and activate the neurons. Although these drugs
mimic the brain's own chemicals, they don't activate neurons in the same way as a natural
neurotransmitter, and they lead to abnormal messages being sent through the network. Other
drugs, such as amphetamine or cocaine, can cause the neurons to release abnormally large
amounts of natural neurotransmitters or prevent the normal recycling of these brain chemicals
by interfering with transporters. This too amplifies or disrupts the normal communication
between neurons. What parts of the brain are affected by drug use? Drugs can alter important
brain areas that are necessary for life-sustaining functions and can drive the compulsive drug
use that marks addiction. Brain areas affected by drug use include:
 The basal ganglia, which play an important role in positive forms of motivation,
including the pleasurable effects of healthy activities like eating, socializing, and sex,
and are also involved in the formation of habits and routines. These areas form a key
node of what is sometimes called the brain's "reward circuit." Drugs over-activate this
circuit, producing the euphoria of the drug high; but with repeated exposure, the circuit
adapts to the presence of the drug, diminishing its sensitivity and making it hard to feel
pleasure from anything besides the drug.
 The extended amygdala plays a role in stressful feelings like anxiety, irritability, and
unease, which characterize withdrawal after the drug high fades and thus motivates the
person to seek the drug again. This circuit becomes increasingly sensitive with
increased drug use. Over time, a person with substance use disorder uses drugs to get
temporary relief from this discomfort rather than to get high.

 The prefrontal cortex powers the ability to think, plan, solve problems, make decisions,
and exert self-control over impulses. This is also the last part of the brain to mature,
making teens most vulnerable. Shifting balance between this circuit and the reward and
stress circuits of the basal ganglia and extended amygdala make a person with a
substance use disorder seek the drug compulsively with reduced impulse control.

Short-term effect of drugs on mental health, Psychoactive drugs may cause you ongoing
mental health problems. It is not clear why this happens to some people and not others. It may be
that using a drug has triggered a mental illness you didn’t know you had, or the drug changes the
way a certain chemical affects your brain functions. Here are some of the ways that different drugs
can affect your mental health:
 Drug-induced anxiety disorder
You may have panic attacks – periods of very severe anxiety when your heart rate increases,
with trembling, sweats, shortness of breath, and a fear of losing control. You may also feel like
your surroundings are strange and unreal, or that you are losing your personal identity and sense
of reality.
 Drug-induced psychosis
Psychoactive drugs can cause delusions – you believe things that aren’t true, or hallucinations –
you see or hear things that are not there.
 Drug-induced mood disorder
You may have times when you feel depressed – sad, restless, irritable, tired, loss of pleasure, or manic
– elevated mood, delusions, impulsive behavior, racing thoughts. This is called mood disorder and
may be caused by drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, heroin and methadone, to name a few.
Long-term effects of drugs on mental health, Psychoactive drugs may cause you ongoing mental
health problems. It is not clear why this happens to some people and not others. It may be that
using a drug has triggered a mental illness you didn’t know you had, or the drug changes the way
a certain chemical affects your brain functions. Here are some of the ways that different drugs
can affect your mental health:

 Ecstasy and depression

Ecstasy is an amphetamine that causes hallucinations. It works by making serotonin more
available and gives you a sense of euphoria when you take it. Serotonin is a chemical naturally
found in your brain which regulates your mood. It is sometimes called the ‘happy hormone’.
Ecstasy causes your brain to release a much higher amount of serotonin than usual. Over time
your natural stores of serotonin may drop so much that you may never have the same levels as
you had before you started using drugs. If lots of serotonin means euphoria than lack of serotonin
means depression. You may experience short-term depression in the days after you use ecstasy
but we need more research about the long term effects.

 Cannabis and schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness which may cause you to hear voices in your head and
believe that other people are trying to control or harm you. Research shows a link
between cannabis and people with schizophrenia. It is possible that if you have a pre-existing
risk which you may not be aware of, there is a higher chance that using cannabis will trigger an
episode of schizophrenia. These risks are also greater in younger people who use cannabis and
those that smoke it more regularly.

Using cannabis as a teenager may be a risk to many aspects of your mental health. One of the
compounds in cannabis – THC (tetrahydrocannabinoid) – gets you ‘high’. THC is very similar to
endocannabinoids which are naturally found in your brain. These regulate other chemicals that
control many aspects of your brain function and behaviour. Because THC is so similar, it can
mimic the effects of these natural compounds and take over these aspects of your brain function.
The long-term effects of using cannabis in your teens may be caused by the influence of THC on
your brain’s chemical systems at a time when your brain is still developing.
