BASIC PRINCIPLES

The three phases of a chess game are


Opening
Middle Game
Endgame
OPENING
1. Develop your pieces to centre for centre control.
2. Develop all your pieces as early as possible.
3. Take the king to safety.
4. Move the queen away from the first rank to connect
the rooks.
5. Never go for an attack without completing the
development.
MIDDLE GAME
1. Exchange pieces or pawn only when you get material
advantage.
2. Place the minor pieces in the best square that is
BISHOP: In the diagonal
KNIGHT: In the outpost
ROOK: In the open or semi open file
3. Always keep your pieces connected.
4. Always look for a move with double idea.
5. When you achieve material advantage force the
exchange of all pieces.
ENDGAME
1. Move the king to centre.
2. Place the rook behind the passer pawn whether it is
opponents’s or ours.
3. If you have a passer pawn, place the rook behind it and
promote it.
4. Rook should occupy the 7th rank.
5. Defend your 2nd rank.
6. Try to double your rooks in the 7th rank.
7. Bishop and knight should occupy the centre.
8. Move the majority pawns to create a passed pawn.
GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING A GAME
1. Occupation of centre.
2. Control of central squares.
3. Understand the purpose of every move of your
opponent.
4. Make every move with a purpose.
5. Device the strategy in the middle game and plan
moves to achieve that.
6. Never exchange without an advantage for you.
7. Employ pins and avoid pins.
8. Ensure that your pieces are interconnected.
9. Concentrate on centre control always.
