Deliberative Democracy
Magazines are a periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, typically
covering a particular subject or area of interest. It is also a device to induce people to read
advertising.
I consider magazines as a deliberative democracy because people never got to question
its uses. Because nowadays all the things or informations we can see on a magazine can
be easily searched online if you have access of internet and basically magazines are now
useless but people are still buying them for a certain reason.

Tragedy of the Commons

Cars are being used by people for easier transportation or to go from one location to
another. Most of the people now have their own cars, some even have more than one car
just because they can afford to buy it even if they don’t really need it.
Cars can be an example for the tragedy of the commons because, cars do really help us to
have a better transportation but we can’t deny the fact that vehicles are major contributors
to air pollution and air pollution can be a cause to a lot of diseases.

Alternative Modernity
Genyo e-Learning is a learning platform that provides rich and engaging alternative
multimedia content for the students so they can have fun while enhancing their academic
performance. Schools used to use this kind of learning platform back then because they
believed kids nowadays opens their computers or phones more than opening a book.
Genyo e-Learning can be considered as a alternative modernity because not all parts of
our country are technologically advanced and ready for it. This learning platform was
2

also a flop because it did not enhance the academic performance of students but instead it
worsened the usage of computers of the students.

No innovation without representation

iPad is a tablet or "slate" computer. It was invented for people to have a portable and
suitable gadget while traveling or wherever you may go on the daily basis.
iPad can be considered as a innovation without representation because, before iPads
laptops were already invented and it was said to have the same function as the iPad and
that was to have a portable and suitable gadget while traveling. But inventors did not stop
there and continued to invent a lot of more gadgets without even consulting what people
really need.

Privileged position of business and science

Smartwatch is a mobile device with touchscreen display and it is designed to be worn on
the wrist. Smartwatch is very expensive device and some people nowadays buys this
device just to help then save time and keep better tabs on their health.
Smartwatches can belong to privileged position of business and science because
smartwatches is not really a necessary thing to have it was just invented for vain and
more privileged people because they know that they’re the people that will be hooked by
it.

Legacy Thinking
Sexuality or sexual urges of a person is a big part of an individuals life. Most of the
people nowadays are sexually active, may it be a boy or a girl. Most of us know that
Filipinos are conservative about this topic, not just in this topic but in general. Filipinos
have this kind of perception that people who are sexually active especially girls are
unethical.
Sexuality or sexual urges of a person can belong to legacy thinking in my opinion
because, people tend to have this perception that we Filipinos got from out ancestors that
it is okay for boys to be sexually active because it is in their nature but when a girl is
3

sexually active people tend to see you as a whore or a girl with no dignity and respect for
her self.

STS Social Construction

New years eve, the last day of the year is on December 31. It is celebrated at evening
social gatherings, where many people dance, eat and drink, some people even take it as a
chance to change a bad habit and some take it as a chance to start a new one.
I consider new years eve as a social construction because I believe that celebrating new
years is not necessary and new years is just a social construction that people made.
During new years eve people spend a lot time and money to prepare for the celebration
and I think that this kind of celebration is not really necessary because if you’re really
serious about changing something in your life you can’t just sit and wait for new years
eve to come for you to start and change the habit that you want to change it just a matter
of your willingness to change.

Gentle tyranny
Finding a job is the act of looking for employment, due to unemployment,
underemployment, discontent with a current position, or a desire for a better position.
Some people may have it without a sweat and others may not because of their positions in
life.
Finding a job or getting a job can be a gentle tyranny in opinion because in life some
people don’t really have a choice but to get one in order to survive. Some people may say
that its your choice if you want to work or not and you can just enjoy life and do
whatever you want but how are you gonna enjoy life if you have the money for it?
Therefore we must work hard for us to fulfill our wants and needs.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The proliferation of gadgets like the iPad and smartwatch demonstrates how consumer culture drives technological development by fostering a cycle of continuous innovation and consumption, often driven more by perceived lifestyle enhancements than genuine needs. This culture prioritizes 'newness' and uniqueness, where businesses create products that serve less critical roles but are marketed to fulfill desires for novelty and status, further emphasizing consumption over practical necessity .

The smartwatch exemplifies the 'privileged position of business and science' as it exists more as a luxury than a necessity, developed and marketed towards affluent consumers who can afford cutting-edge technology more as a status symbol than for essential functionality. This demonstrates how technology and business innovate and create markets that primarily serve the interests of privileged demographics, reinforcing socioeconomic divides .

New Year's Eve celebrations can be seen as a social construction as they encompass rituals and expectations—such as parties and resolutions—that society collectively agrees upon despite their arbitrary nature. This collective agreement to mark time renewal enforces conformity to societal norms and expectations, showing how society constructs meaning around time and events to promote social cohesion and continuity .

Finding a job is termed a 'gentle tyranny' because while employment is essential for financial security and meeting basic needs, it subtly coerces individuals into the labor market. This pressure often limits personal freedom and choice, binding individuals to societal structures where their value and identity are tied to employment, thus restricting true autonomy .

Magazines are considered a part of deliberative democracy because they provide a platform for a multitude of voices and ideas which are expressed through articles and advertisements, engaging people in societal and political discourse. Despite the rise of the internet providing more immediate access to information, magazines continue to be popular due to their curated content and the credibility often associated with established publications, thus maintaining their role in fostering public deliberation .

Societal perceptions of female sexual activity as unethical, juxtaposed with acceptance of male sexual activity as natural, reflect 'legacy thinking' as these views are rooted in historical gender biases and societal norms inherited from past generations. This gendered double standard illustrates how outdated cultural beliefs continue to influence contemporary social attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality and gender roles .

The iPad can be considered 'innovation without representation' because it was developed as a portable computing solution similar to laptops which already existed, but without clear public demand for a new form factor. This reflects a pattern where technology companies focus on creating new products to drive market consumption rather than addressing specific consumer needs, potentially prioritizing profit over practical utility .

The societal belief that New Year's Eve is crucial for self-improvement underscores how social constructs shape personal development, suggesting external timing rather than intrinsic motivation dictates life changes. This perspective can limit self-directed change throughout the year, simplifying personal growth into a yearly ritual rather than a continuous process, showing the power of societal norms in directing personal behavior .

Genyo e-Learning represents alternative modernity by attempting to integrate technology into education to engage students, aligning with modern educational trends. However, it faced challenges in actual implementation as many regions lacked the necessary technological infrastructure, and its use inadvertently increased reliance on digital devices, potentially detracting from traditional academic skills. This dichotomy highlights the gap between advanced educational ideals and the readiness of the broader educational system to embrace them .

Cars exemplify the tragedy of the commons as they are individually beneficial for transportation but collectively contribute to significant air pollution, a common resource deteriorated by overuse. This widespread car usage leads to adverse societal impacts, including health issues from pollution, increased carbon footprints, and the escalating costs for communities to manage pollution-related challenges .
