IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM
Using Garlic as an
organic insecticide
for termites, Does it
work?
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
a) What Vitamins and Minerals does garlic
have?
Garlic cloves have amazingly high levels of
vitamins and minerals. Just 100 g provides (in % of
recommended daily allowance):
95% of vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine),
52% of vitamin C,
33% of copper,
21% of iron,
18% of calcium,
26% Selenium, and
73% of manganese
RATIONALE
Why did we use Garlic?
In our study we use the plant Garlic for our organic
insecticide because it is said to be that garlic has
this smell that is unlike by the termites, also garlic
can easily be found and bought in the market.
STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The results of the study will be of great benefit to:
Our Health.
We made this study of “Using Garlic as an organic
insecticide for termites, Does it work?” is because of
today’s generation, using insecticide is very common,
using insecticide also make humans work easy but does
using this insecticides, healthy? Insecticides contains
chemical that is bad for us humans, it could cause:
• Allergic Reaction
An acute allergic reaction can occur within 24 hours of
exposure, according to the University of Missouri
Extension's website. Allergic reactions usually include
difficulty breathing similar to an asthma attack, skin
and nose irritation and watering of the eyes. Allergic
reactions do not occur in all people who use
pesticides, even in some people who are sensitive to
chemicals.
• Chronic Poisoning
A person who is exposed to small amounts of
insecticides over a long period of time can experience
the effects of chronic poisoning. This type of
insecticide poisoning often causes physical and
neurological effects such as nervousness, slow
movement, twitching and a decline in good health.
Chronic poisoning may be difficult to treat, especially
if the source of the poisoning is not known.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
DEFINITION
Termites
What are Termites?
Termites usually are cryptic, meaning that they don't
come out into the open making them difficult to detect.
They are often called the "silent destroyer" because
they may be secretly hiding and thriving in your home
or yard without any immediate signs of damage. Even
when they are visible within the home as flying
insects, termites can often be mistaken for ants. Some
homeowners will dismiss the termites as pesky ants
(which often swarm at the same time of year) and ignore
them without taking any preventive or extermination
measures. This allows established termite infestations
to grow exponentially. Termites can be identified by
their straight, beaded antennae, uniform waists, and
wings of equal size. (Ants have elbowed antennae,
constricted waists and forewings that are longer than
the hind wings.)
While termite workers only measure approximately 1 cm
to a few millimeters in length, their feeding habits
are capable of causing costly damage to property.
Termites primarily feed on cellulose, a part of wood,
but also damage paper, books, insulation, and even
swimming pool liners and filtration systems. All
termites feed on detritus (dead plants and trees as
well as dead parts of living trees, including wood).
Unfortunately, all homes, regardless of their
construction type, can provide cellulose food for
termite infestation. House foundations, furniture,
shelves and even books are all possible feeding sites
for termites. Termites can harm living trees and
shrubs, but are more often are a secondary invader of
woody plants already in decline.
