Variation of Photoelectric Current with Intensity

This document summarizes an experiment to study the variation of photoelectric current with light intensity using a photocell. The experiment tests the relationship that [1] photoelectric current (I) is directly proportional to light intensity (E), and [2] light intensity (E) is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (d) between the light source and photocell. Measurements are taken of current (I) at different distances (d) between the photocell and light bulb. A graph is then plotted of current (I) versus the inverse square of distance (1/d^2) to show the direct proportionality relationship between current and light intensity.

EXPERIMENT
OBJECT:-

To study the variation of photo electric current with intensity of light using photocell.

APPARATUS:-
Photocell, Micro ammeter, Electrical bulb (60-100W), Meter scale, Connecting wires.

WORKING FORMULA :-

In photo cell the current “I” is directly proportional to the intensity of light “E” i-e

I α E ------------------ (1)
According to inverse square law,
E α 1/ d2 ------------------- ( 2 )
From relation (1) and (2) we can write
I α 1 / d2 (where “d” is the distance between the bulb and photocell)

OBSERVATION :-
Current Distance between photocell Mean
[Link] I (μA) and lamp distance d2 1/ d2
Decreasing Increasing d= cm2 cm-2

CALCULATION From graph
1) I = -------------- , 1/d2 = ---------, d2 = -----------
2
I x d = -------------- I
2) I = -------------- , 1/d2 = ---------, d2 = -----------
I x d2 = --------------
RESULT The graph between I and 1/d2 is a straight line which shows that I α E
