SAP Branding Strategy Challenges and Solutions

SAP realized in the early 2000s that it needed to improve its branding and marketing efforts as the software industry shifted towards internet-based products, leading to confusion among customers about SAP's product portfolio and messaging. To address this, SAP should standardize its brand architecture under a single, clear logo and position itself as a leader in enterprise software that transforms businesses by enabling efficiency, accountability, and profitability through reliable, high-quality technology solutions.

technology brand

1. Why didn’t SAP pay adequate attention to branding and marketing?
SAP as a company was known for its products and its heritage of the market leadership and
reliability. Founded by five engineers from IBM, the company fostered an organization
culture that was highly product driven. The focus of company had always been its products
and it was not in their culture to focus much on marketing and branding. The brand grew
because of the products.

2. What were the key branding related issues that SAP had to address in the year 2000?
During this time many companies and vendors were selling products based on internet. SAP
was a late comer to this trend. For SAP the market had already changed a lot. The internet
was transforming every aspect of the business and SAP was late to realize that.
SAP then came up with their new internet based product called mySAP. However, there was
still a concern that SAP will be perceived as outdated by many because of all the hot new
competitive products. This led them to replace SAP logo with the new mySAP logo on the
company’s website. For customers this caused a lot of confusion. Also their tagline kept
changing from “We Can Change Your Business Perspective” to “The City of e” to “The
Times of New Management” etc. This caused increased confusion in the minds of consumers.

3. What should SAP stand for? What is its key brand promise?
SAP was a leader as and Enterprise Software provider in every major market, with sales more
in more than 50 countries worldwide. Customers saw SAP products as enabling them to do
their businesses in a better way. According to customers:
 SAP products transformed businesses
 Enabled companies from various places in leveraging technology to improve
efficiency, accountability, visibility and hence the profits.

The focus point of SAP has always been its products which are of superior quality and have
features which are reliable and secure. SAP should highlight these aspects of its products
while creating a brand image.

The key brand promise should also be around the values of reliability, quality and security
which the product will provide as compared to its competitors.

4. What should be done with the SAP brand architecture and what should be done with the
logos?
Brand architecture is important as it defines the way in which all the brands within a company
are related to and differentiated from one another. In case of SAP, which offers multiple
products, brand architecture becomes even more important. The brand portfolio should be
restructured such that all brands are an extension carrying the corporate brand’s name e.g.
SAP digital etc. These are called as endorsed brands.
Logo:
A single logo should be used under which all the sub brands will come in. This will avoid any
confusion on the part of the customers. For this one logo should be finalized.
