Assignment No. 1.
1. A ten-storied office building complex is planned to cover a plan area of 200 m x 300 m.
Preliminary survey of site indicated that it is likely to have a top 3.0 m of slity sand
followed by 7 m of clay beyond which it is likely to have medium dense sand extending
to a great depth. Position of water table is 7m below ground surface. Prepare a complete
exploration program that would help in deciding the type of foundation and giving the
required design parameters.
2. A standard penetration test was carried out at a site. The soil profile is given in Fig. with
the penetration values. The average soil data are given for each layer.
Compute the corrected values of N and plot showing the
(a) variation of observed values with depth
(b) variation of corrected values with depth for standard energy 60%
Assume: Eh = 0.7, Cd = 0.9, Cs = 0.85 and Cb = 1.05
3. A seismic refraction survey of an area gave the following data:
(a) Plot the time travel versus distance and determine velocities of the top and underlying
layer of soil
(b) Determine the thickness of the top layer
(c) Using the seismic velocities evaluate the probable earth materials in the two layers
