Dear Richard,

I have been making further contact with local groups, but what I really need is an idea of the
scope of what's possible. From what I've seen looking at Historic England's reports and The
Heritage Fund etc, the kind of things to do are:

Remove unnecessary street furniture


Install 'nicer' street furniture - heritage streetlights, bins, benches etc etc
Cleaning and/or resurfacing of pavements and roads (e.g. replacement of modern slabs with
old flagstones etc, or restoration of cobbled roads)
Installation of areas for gardening, and general community things.

What kind of scale can we look at? It seems that regarding The Heritage Fund, almost
anything is possible. But we need some sort of guidance to work within to avoid going far
over the top and having to cut back plans.

I suppose what I mean to say is that if I go to people proposing these things, they will ask
what authority I am working within. If I cannot come up with sufficient backing, there can
hardly be any confidence in what I say is possible, if I don't have the necessary details of
funding sources etc, and assurances that whatever plan we come up with (if good enough)
isn't simply ignored.

In the meantime, there is also plenty of unnecessary street furniture that attracts littering
that could be removed. The worst part I know of is just outside 'Ethio Stores' on Judd
Street/Bidborough Street. Seems to be just empty boxes that people stuff things in. Also
those large recycling bins tend to just attract recycling 'fly tipping' rather than responsible
use, e.g. on Bidborough Street outside the Town Hall and on Judd Street by Half Cup.

I've noticed that the recycling bins outside QAM have been removed. Looks much better
now! Although some hopefuls are still putting bits of recycling there.
