Ciena’s 6500 is the first platform in the industry to offer integrated Ethernet,
TDM, and WDM capabilities for aggregation, switching, and transport,
enabling NSPs to simultaneously provision the established services of today
and the high-growth broadband services of tomorrow. The 6500 leverages
Ciena’s technological innovation and sets a new industry benchmark in
network simplification, scalability, flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
The Converged platform allows the user to scale the system for future growth
without requiring a fork lift upgrade. The 6500 shelves are designed from the
initial release to support Photonic, Broadband, MSPP, Packet, and Data
Applications. In addition, the shelves can support 40G and 100G interfaces.
The backplane is also designed to support applications where OTN switching
is required.
The key features and benefits of the 6500 in specific applications include:
• SONET/SDH transport
Existing network service provider infrastructure is heavily based on TDM
transport, and NSPs will continue to require transport of TDM services
during their evolution to a data-centric network. The 6500 provides all the
well established SDH functions with excellent densities and flexibility. High
density DS1/E1, DS3/E3, EC-1/STS-1 copper interfaces, modular and per
port selectable OC-3/STM-1, STM-1e, OC-12/STM-4, OC-48/STM-16
MSPP services
The 6500 can be configured to add value to various network applications that
span across the customer access space through the metro or regional core
network. The principal 6500 target applications are Metro inter-office (IOF)
and regional core transport where the 6500 is capable of readily scaling its
transport capacity to support core networking between metro and regional
service aggregation COs with multi-fiber connections at 2.5 Gbit/s and 10
Gbit/s line rates through its integrated long range optics, including DWDM
compatible interfaces. In addition, the 6500 provides various sophisticated
standards-based protection options such as control plane-based mesh
networking support that complies with the more stringent and efficient
protection and restoration requirements for core networking across the
backbone.
The 6500 fully interworks with the current Ciena optical portfolio as depicted
in Figure 1-1. This interworking capability is ensured through careful attention
to optical layer design, service implementation technology details, network
management consistency and detailed interoperation testing.
Figure 1-1
6500 application overview (example)
The 6500 integrates high-speed metro and regional core networking long
reach optical interfaces, thereby obviating the need to deploy specialized core
networking transport ADMs. The 6500 supports multiple 2.5 Gbit/s
(OC-48/STM-16) or 10 Gbit/s (OC-192/STM-64) line rate rings or
point-to-point connections for core networking applications.
The 6500 can be deployed as the fiber access head end mux to Ciena’s
market leading Multiservice Platforms. In addition, subtending 6500 shelves,
that may either be collocated with the CO head-end 6500 or situated remotely
at a customer site, can be used as scalable aggregation points for mixed
optical and electrical service access. These service aggregation 6500s would
The suite of 6500 supported optical interfaces include DWDM and CWDM
optics for scalable high-capacity core networking even in fiber constrained
environments.
Management features available for the GFP are the client payload type, and
GFP frame sequence check. All of the client management frames will be
supported which will enable alarming on far end status, GFP loss of frame
delineation, or service mismatch. The VCAT can be alarmed on
loss-of-multi-frame, sequence mismatch, and loss of alignment.
These same interfaces will also support Fibre Channel. Each port can be
provisioned as either GE or Fibre Channel and will be supported with GFP
over SONET/SDH frames.
The 6500 also supports Virtual Concatenation (ITU-T G.707 compliant) with
support at the VT1.5-nv, VT2-nv, STS1-nv, and STS3c-nv SONET rates as
well as VC11-nv, VC12-nv, VC3-nv, and VC4-nv SDH rates. Up to 108 ms of
differential delay is supported (dependent on circuit pack type).
Along with VCAT, the 6500 also supports value added capabilities such as soft
protection with Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS - G.7042). LCAS
has been specifically developed to overcome static link provisioning. It
enables service providers to efficiently offer dynamically-allocated bandwidth
as well as hitless throttling of the capacity of a VCAT link (or Virtual
Concatenated Group) by adding or removing STSs or VCs as required.
The 6500 also support the ability to encapsulate GE and lower rate Ethernet
100 Mb/s traffic into ODU0 containers for aggregation into an ODU1/OTU1.
Further flexibility allows the add/drop of ODU0 containers in an ADM
application. For instance, on an OTU1 line, one ODU0 in the OPU1 can drop
to a client while the other ODU0 can passthrough to another OTU1 line.
TDM switching
In the 6500 architecture, traffic is switched between port circuit packs with the
cross-connect circuit packs. Two cross-connect circuit packs are used to
provide redundant equipment protection. All ingress port circuit pack traffic is
mapped into VT1.5/VC11, VT2/VC12, or STS1/VC-3/4 containers and
directed towards the cross-connect circuit pack which is configured to switch
the incoming traffic to the appropriate egress port circuit pack. The
cross-connect circuit pack allows any input channel to be connected to any
output channel. Using this basic functionality, the system can support diverse
connection and protection configurations.
The 6500 platform has been designed to support several different switch
fabrics which include an 80 Gbit/s STS1/VC3 matrix, an 80 Gbit/s VT1.5/VC12
matrix, a 160 Gbit/s STS1/VC3 matrix, a 240 Gbit/s STS1/VC3, and a 640
Gbit/s STS1/VC3. The architecture of the 6500 has been designed to scale
beyond this switching capacity in the future in response to market demand.
Layer 2 switching
The 6500 is architected to support Layer 2 Service Switch (L2SS and PDH
gateway) series of circuit packs to help aggregate and switch Ethernet
services. The L2SS will work into both the STS-1/VC-3 and VT1.5/VC-12
cross-connect circuit packs for GFP mapped Ethernet, which could be
provided by the 6500, OM3000, and 565, 5100 and 5200 Advanced Services
Platform Ethernet Private Line (EPL) circuit packs. The L2SS circuit packs
also support native Ethernet interfaces for switching directly into the transport
network including 802.3ah support for head end integration of the OME1000
series of products. Designed for carrier grade reliability, manageability,
broadband data rates, and service flexibility, the L2SS series of circuit packs
provide a strong Ethernet services and infrastructure solution for IP, Ethernet
Private LANs, Ethernet VPNs, Ethernet Virtual Private Lines, Triple Play
Services, and Internet access solutions.
With the L2SS series of circuit packs, Ciena continues its technology direction
to support Ethernet over GFP for transport over SONET/SDH as
demonstrated in our 6110, 6130, 6150, OM3000, OM4000, and 565, 5100,
and 5200 Advanced Services product lines. The L2SS will also support virtual
and contiguous concatenation as well as LCAS (for VCAT) in order to ensure
that packet traffic is most efficiently, reliably, and deterministically carried over
the transport network. The L2SS circuit packs will evolve by supporting
stacked VLAN switching, stacking, popping, MAC Switching, Distributed LAG,
and Resilient Packet Ring for immense scale and availability. The L2SS circuit
packs support both Ethernet UNI (User-to-Network interfaces) such as VLAN
and raw Ethernet as well as Ethernet NNI (Network-to-Network Interfaces)
with stacked VLAN and includes point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and
any-to-any logical topologies.
The Layer 2 Multiplexer Optical Transponder (L2 MOTR) 2x10G XFP 10xSFP
(as SFP ports support more than GE) is a packet-aware optical transport
module, similar to an Ethernet private line card with an awareness of
switching, aggregation, and Quality of Service (QoS) functionality. The
L2 MOTR circuit pack integrates packet awareness within traditional optical
transport network elements and operates at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer). The L2
MOTR circuit pack supports E-LINE, E-LAN Layer 2 switched services and
E-LINE Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) services.
Layer 2 RPR
As defined by the IEEE 802.17-2004 Std and IEEE 802.17b, RPR is a ring
based technology that enables bandwidth sharing, high reliability, and network
simplicity across multiple Ethernet ports for efficient transport of packets. RPR
Ethernet circuit packs are offered for private LAN applications and as efficient
Ethernet switched backhaul for Ethernet VPN and IP traffic. These circuit
packs allow for the sharing of STS/VC bandwidth amongst multiple nodes and
allow for any-any connectivity. Virtual LANs can share RPR ring bandwidth
using Traffic Domain Identifier (TDI) labels. These labels are similar to VLAN
tags but provide greater flexibility and scalability. RPR ring bandwidth can be
allocated at the STS12c/VC4-4c, and STS48c/VC4-16c, STS1-nV/VC3-nV
(n=3 to 96), and STS3c-nv/VC4-nv (n=1 to 32) levels. RPR is a key technology
within the 6500 Layer 2 switching solution.
The real added value of the Broadband interfaces is based on its ability to
provide per wavelength dispersion compensation, which eliminates the need
for in-line dispersion slope compensation modules (DSCM) and their
associated additional amplification requirements. This dramatic innovation
has several advantages:
• 10G, 40G, and 100G transport with no bulk-DCM in the line, dramatically
reducing the cost of 10G, 40G, and 100G DWDM transport
• Enables wavelength agility throughout the network
• Provides a day one DWDM optical layer that does not need to be
engineered with a complex DSCM design
• Facilitates the deployment of wavelengths without the need to make any
changes to the DWDM optical layer
Attention: The RS8 FEC algorithm is also known as ITU-T G.709 RS-8.
SCFEC FEC algorithm is also known as ITU-T G.975 I.4.
UFEC FEC algorithm is also known as ITU-T G.975 I.7.
The architecture of 6500 offers an optimized reach solution pushing the OEO
(Optical-Electrical-Optical) boundary further out.
The 40G and 100G Broadband interfaces address the needs of many global
carriers for more bandwidth across existing networks and fibers and provides:
• the ability to leverage existing DWDM network equipment without
re-engineering the network
• tunable laser to reduce sparing costs and equipment management
complexity
Photonic services
The 6500 platform provides a single integrated shelf which is able to support
Layer 1 and Layer 2 service interfaces (SONET/SDH, Ethernet,
Fiber-Channel, etc.) and photonic layer (Layer 0) functionality (including
ROADM and wavelength services). Consolidation of hardware and software
generates savings for providers as well as lower operational expenditures.
The 6500 provides customers a photonic line solution that bridges edge and
core applications while pushing the technology envelope to bring the most
cost effective, scalable, and above all, flexible solution that the market requires
to meet ongoing competitive pressures. The guiding principles for the support
of Photonic services in 6500 are:
• a cost-optimized, scalable design that provides the lowest possible first in
cost, with a clear path to a lower full-fill cost and minimized operational
expenditures
• an optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM)-centric platform that is WSS
based for per wavelength access and branching
• flexibility to deploy a wide range of systems including those with fully
automated channel addition or deletion capabilities or alternatively
low-cost passive systems that do not employ any automation
• a platform capable of supporting both edge and core dense wavelength
division multiplexing (DWDM) applications
• a platform that provides one of the richest optical layer performance
monitoring tools on the market.
Some of the key benefits of OTN transport and switched services include:
• Transparency
— bit stream and timing transparency
— mixing of asynchronous and synchronous signal types in a single
wavelength
— full rate 10GE on ~10G interface
• Carrier grade performance monitoring and alarms
— adding PM and fault isolation capabilities to Async data services
where these capabilities are lacking (e.g. GE, FC, ESCON)
• Tandem Connection Monitoring (TCM)
• Multi-protocol Convergence - one technology to transparently transport
many services such as:
— SONET/SDH
— PDH
— IP/Ethernet including full rate GE
— FC/ESCON
• Density within wavelength multiplexing and between wavelength
multiplexing (DWDM)
• Distance: built in FEC for improved effective BER
Hardware-modular architecture
Ciena has introduced new service flexibility by making the 6500 a
service-independent platform that interworks with Ciena and foreign
(non-Ciena) DWDM wavelengths from other vendors’ multiservice
provisioning platform (MSPP), Broadband (BB), OTN,
optical-electrical-optical (OEO) or optical cross-connect (OXC) devices.
Control Plane
This release of 6500 supports control plane on SONET/SDH and OTN
interfaces. This release of 6500 also supports Photonics Layer 0 Control
Plane.
Control Plane enables users to provision a system where the signal between
two end points will be protected for as long as there is a path through the
network between the original end points. Ciena's Optical Signaling and
Routing Protocol (OSRP) is used to ensure that there is always a path
available that can be used for signal restoration/protection.
Network management
The 6500 is managed as an integral part of Ciena’s market proven end-to-end
optical portfolio management capabilities. This framework is architected to
support sophisticated and highly customizable desktop applications providing
centralized topology view and fault management, centralized launch pad for a
full suite of management applications, easy-to-use nodal managers, and
seamless network element reach-through for Ciena’s complete optical
networks portfolio. These capabilities are supported by Ciena’s OneControl
Unified Management System, which provides a single solution for network
and service management capabilities across the portfolio of Ciena’s Ethernet,
Transport, and Switching services. By providing a single, central platform that
works in concert with several otherwise separate Ciena Element Management
Systems (EMSes), OneControl provides a consistent look and feel for
monitoring and management. OneControl’s Manager for 6k, OM5k and CPL
offers a comprehensive and scalable element management system for Ciena
optical network elements, including the 6500. The 6500 is aligned with
OneControl Release 4.0 (when 6500 network element is running 10.0
software) or 4.1 (when 6500 network element is running 10.05 software).
The 6500 also supports simple network management protocol (SNMP) which
is an application-layer protocol that provides a way to monitor and manage
networking devices. In an SNMP network, a management station (known as
the SNMP manager) sends set or get messages to a networking device
(known as the SNMP agent). The messages allow the SNMP manager to
change or retrieve fields in the agent’s database of networking information,
known as a management information base (MIB).
Photonic Network Capture includes a Web Client that allows the user to view
historic network capture information from previously taken captures and
compare it to that of a baseline capture, the previous capture, or the data
trend.

Physical description
The 6500 hardware platform has the following modular components:
• 6500 shelf (see “Shelf assemblies” on page 3-5)
• cooling unit (see “Air flow directions and cooling configurations” on page
3-69)
• breaker interface panel (optional) (see Common Equipment,
323-1851-102.1)
• electrical interface chassis (not required for Broadband and Photonic
applications) (see Common Equipment, 323-1851-102.1)
• fiber routing channel (see “Fiber/cable routing channel” on page 3-65)
Also
• the 14-slot shelf platform fits a standard ETSI (535 mm), 19 in. EIA or
NEBS2000 rack with a standard 300 mm x 600 mm footprint and the ANSI
(23 in.) rack. The traffic-carrying circuit packs are vertically aligned.
• the 32-slot shelf platform can be installed in an ETSI (535 mm) or 23 in.
rack but not in a 19 in. rack. The traffic-carrying circuit packs are vertically
aligned.
• the 7-slot shelf platform can be installed in an ETSI (535 mm), 19 in. or 23
in. rack. The traffic-carrying circuit packs are horizontally aligned.
• the 6500-7 packet-optical shelf platform can be installed in an ETSI (535
mm), 19 in. or 23 in. rack. The traffic-carrying circuit packs are horizontally
aligned.
• the 2-slot shelf platform can be installed in an ETSI (535 mm), 19 in. or 23
in. rack. The traffic-carrying circuit packs are horizontally aligned. However
unique to the 2-slot AC shelf variant (NTK503NAE5) and 2-slot optical
Type 2 shelf variant (NTK503LA), wall mounting installation is also
supported resulting in the traffic-carrying circuit packs being vertically
aligned.
Bay/rack configurations
The 6500 bay configuration and rack density depends on the services to be
deployed (optical only or optical and/or electrical) which determines the shelf
assembly. The 6500 supports the following 44U bay configurations:
• up to three 14-slot shelves per bay when deploying only optical services
requiring only the optical shelf, packet-optical, or converged optical shelf
assembly
• up to two shelves per bay when deploying:
— 32-slot shelves
— 14-slot front electrical shelves
• up to four 14-slot shelves per bay when deploying the 14-slot optical/rear
electrical shelf assemblies NTK503CA. If space is required in the rack for
optical fiber management and/or DWDM equipment, the maximum
number of 14-slot optical/rear electrical shelf assemblies will be less than
four. Each 14-slot optical/rear electrical shelf assembly or pair of stacked
14-slot optical/rear electrical shelf assemblies requires an air inlet plenum
and a cooling unit.
• up to three 14-slot shelves per bay when deploying the 14-slot optical/rear
electrical (NTK503CCE5 variant) or 14-slot converged optical/rear
electrical shelf assemblies.
For thermal limitations for deploying 14-slot optical/rear electrical shelf and
14-slot converged optical/rear electrical shelf assemblies, see the
configuration rules in Planning - Ordering Information, 323-1851-151.
In the case of a shelf installed above a front exhausting shelf, the lower shelf
exhaust will partially mix with the ambient air before being drawn into the
intake air plenum of the upper shelf. Depending on the air mixing and the left
to right temperature gradient, some or all the circuit packs in the upper shelf
will likely be exposed to higher air temperatures than the circuit packs in the
shelf below.

Note 1: For all supported MSPP circuit packs in 14-slot shelf types, SONET/SDH cross-connect circuit
packs are required in slots 7 and 8.
Note 2: This circuit pack is supported in a 14-slot packet-optical shelf type (NTK503SA) only when the shelf
is equipped with 240G+ STS-1/VC-3 (NTK557EAE5) or 240G+/80G VT1.5/VC12 (NTK557GAE5)
cross-connect circuit packs.
Note 3: The supported slots are
— 1-6 or 9-14 when used with a 160G+ STS-1/VC-3 (160/0), 240G+ STS-1/VC-3 (240/0), or 240G+/80G
VT1.5/VC-12 (240/80) cross-connect circuit pack.
— and also 5, 6, 9, and 10 when used with 80G cross-connect circuit packs (80/20, 80/80, and 80/0). Slots
1 to 4 and 11 to 14 can be also used with 80G cross-connect circuit packs when only 5G of bandwidth
is required.
Note 4: DS1 interfaces are provided by the DSM 84xDS1 termination module (TM) circuit packs installed
in a separate DS1 service module (DSM) shelf. The DSM is interconnected to the 6500 through OC-3 links.
Note 5: In a 14-slot shelf, the 40G XCIF circuit pack is only supported in slots 6 and 10 when the shelf is
equipped with the 160G X-Conn circuit pack.
Note 6: Slots 7 and 8 of a 14-slot packet-optical shelf (NTK503SA) cannot be equipped with these circuit
packs. For the full list of circuit packs that can/cannot be equipped in slots 7 and 8 of a 14-slot packet-optical
shelf (NTK503SA), refer to Table 2-19 on page 2-134.
Note 7: If installed in slot 7 or 8, only Broadband or Photonic circuit packs can be provisioned in the other
interface slots.
Note 8: This release of 6500 supports ODU3+ connections only on certain slots. Refer to Part 1 of
Configuration - Bandwidth and Data Services, 323-1851-320 (Chapter 4).

Note 12: Not supported in metro front electrical shelf (NTK503GA).
Note 13: Although 2xOSC, SRA, SAM, or ESAM circuit packs can be equipped in slots 1 to 14 of a 14-slot
shelf, it is recommended to use slots 1 and/or 14 of the 14-slot shelf (for the first pair of 2xOSC, SRA, SAM,
or ESAM circuit packs) if there is an intention to use Wayside traffic on the circuit pack now or in the future.
Channels for electrical cable management within the 14-slot packet-optical shelf (NTK503SA), 14-slot
converged optical shelf (NTK503ADE5), converged optical/front electrical shelf (NTK503BDE5), or
converged optical/rear electrical shelf (NTK503CDE5) fibre management tray associated with slots 1 and 14
of the 14-slot shelf allow for routing of two RJ-45 Category 5 Ethernet cables to each of those slots. These
channels are separated from the fibre routing area and can be used to connect to the two Wayside Ethernet
ports found on the 2xOSC circuit pack or one Wayside Ethernet port found on the SRA, SAM, or ESAM
circuit pack. The Wayside Ethernet ports are intended for intrabuilding use only.
Note 14: This circuit pack is not supported for use in slots 7 and 8 of the 14-slot packet-optical shelf
(NTK503SA). Contact your Ciena representative for more information.
Note 15: This circuit pack cannot be placed in slot 14 of a 14-slot shelf since this is a double-slot circuit pack.
Note 16: This circuit pack cannot be placed in slots 13 and 14 of a 14-slot shelf since this is a triple-slot
circuit pack
Note 17: If you equip the passive modules (half-width modules OMDF4, BS1, BS2, BS3, BS5, and OSCF
equipped in subslots 1 to 6 and full-width module OMDF8 equipped in subslots 1 and 4) in a PPC6, the 6500
supports autoprovisioning and automatic inventory via the built-in PPC6 processor which interfaces directly
with the 6500 shelf access panel. Note that the passive modules OMDF4, OMDF8, BS1, BS2, BS3, BS5,
and OSCF do not directly report to the 6500 shelf access panel.
Note 18: For all supported OTN I/F, PKT I/F and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs in 14-slot packet-optical shelf
type, it is mandatory to use dual PKT/OTN cross-connect circuit packs.
Note 19: For all supported OTN I/F, PKT I/F, and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs in 14-slot packet-optical shelf,
PKT/OTN cross-connect circuit packs are required in slots 7 and 8.
Note 20: This circuit pack is supported in a 14-slot packet-optical shelf type (NTK503SA) only when the
shelf is equipped with 600G PKT/OTN (NTK615AA) or 1200G PKT/OTN Type 2 (NTK615BA) cross-connect
circuit packs.
Note 21: This circuit pack is supported in a 14-slot packet-optical shelf type (NTK503SA) only when the

Note 1: For all supported MSPP circuit packs in 32-slot shelf types, SONET/SDH cross-connect circuit
packs are required in slots 9 and 10.
Note 2: This circuit pack is supported in a 32-slot shelf type only when the shelf is equipped with 640G+
STS-1/VC-3 (NTK610BBE5) cross-connect circuit packs.
Note 3: DS1 interfaces are provided by the DSM 84xDS1 termination module (TM) circuit packs
installed in a separate DS1 service module (DSM) shelf. The DSM is interconnected to the 6500
through OC-3 links.
Note 4: If the eMOTR circuit packs are equipped in slots 31 to 38 of a 32-slot shelf type, make sure
the 6500 is running Release 10.05 software (or later releases).
Note 5: This release of 6500 supports ODU4 connections only on certain slots. Refer to Part 1 of
Configuration - Bandwidth and Data Services, 323-1851-320 (Chapter 4).
Note 6: This release of 6500 supports ODU3+ connections only on certain slots. Refer to Part 1 of
Configuration - Bandwidth and Data Services, 323-1851-320 (Chapter 4).
Circuit pack or module type Slot numbering for 32-slot shelf types
NTK603AAE5 and NTK603AB variants
Note 7: A maximum of four 2-Port OPM circuit packs (NTK553PAE5) can be provisioned in a 32-slot
shelf at the same time.
Note 8: Although 2xOSC, SRA, SAM, or ESAM circuit packs can be equipped in slots 1-8, 11-18,
21-28, 31-38 of a 32-slot shelf, it is recommended to use slots 1, 18, 21, and/or 38 of the 32-slot shelf
if there is an intention to use Wayside traffic on the circuit pack now or in the future. Channels for
electrical cable management within the 32-slot packet-optical shelf (NTK603AAE5 or NTK603AB) fibre
management tray associated with slots 1, 18, 21, and 38 of the 32-slot shelf allow for routing of two
RJ-45 Category 5 Ethernet cables to each of those slots. These channels are separated from the fibre
routing area and can be used to connect to the two Wayside Ethernet ports found on the 2xOSC circuit
pack or one Wayside Ethernet port found on the SRA, SAM, or ESAM circuit pack. The Wayside
Ethernet ports are intended for intrabuilding use only.
Note 9: Due to faceplate dimensions, the following releases of the double-slot 100 GHz WSS circuit
pack cannot be equipped in slots 7/8 or 27/28 of 32-slot shelves:
WSS 100 GHz w/OPM 5x1 (NTK553EAE5): releases 01, 02 and 03
WSS 100 GHz w/OPM 2x1(NTK553JAE5): releases 01 and 02
You must use the following releases of the double-slot 100 GHz WSS circuit pack:
WSS 100 GHz w/OPM 5x1 (NTK553EAE5): releases 04 and above
WSS 100 GHz w/OPM 2x1(NTK553JAE5): releases 03 and above
Note 10: This circuit pack cannot be placed in slots 8, 18, 28, and 38 of a 32-slot shelf since this is a
double-slot circuit pack.
Note 11: This circuit pack cannot be placed in slots 7, 8, 17, 18, 27, 28, or 37, and 38 of a 32-slot shelf
since this is a triple-slot circuit pack.
Note 12: A maximum of four triple-slot WSS 50 GHz w/OPM 9x1 circuit packs (NTK553FAE5) can be
provisioned in the 32-slot shelf and only one in any of the following slot groups; 1-6, 11-16, 21-26, and
31-36.
Note 13: If you equip the passive modules (half-width modules OMDF4, BS1, BS2, BS3, BS5, and
OSCF equipped in subslots 1 to 6 and full-width module OMDF8 equipped in subslots 1 and 4) in a
PPC6, the 6500 supports autoprovisioning and automatic inventory via the built-in PPC6 processor
which interfaces directly with the 6500 shelf access panel. Note that the passive modules OMDF4,
OMDF8, BS1, BS2, BS3, BS5, and OSCF do not directly report to the 6500 shelf access panel.
Note 14: For all supported OTN I/F, PKT I/F and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs in 32-slot shelf type, it is
mandatory to use dual PKT/OTN cross-connect circuit packs.

• EVPL connections for L2 MOTR and FLEX MOTR circuit packs
• SNC type connections for circuit packs supporting Control Plane
• OTN connections for OTN I/F circuit packs
Traffic protection
The system monitors the traffic facilities for performance degradation and
failure and performs protection switching when these conditions are present.
Attention: Since GE, 10GE, 10/100BT, DS3, EC-1, DS1, E1, and E3
services in an OC-n/STM-n interface circuit pack are mapped to appropriate
STS/VT/VC containers and assigned as STS/VT/VC level connections, the
traffic protection scheme supported by the OC-n/STM-n interface circuit
packs can be used to provide a protected service without requiring a
redundant handoff from the subtending equipment.
Equipment protection
The 6500 supports the following equipment protection schemes and modes:
• 1+1 nonrevertive for cross-connect circuit packs, multiservice
cross-connect circuit packs, and shelf processor circuit packs
• 1:N for E1 working/protection circuit packs
• 1:N for DS3/EC-1 working/protection circuit packs
• 1:N for DS3/E3 working/protection circuit packs
• 1:N for STM-1e working/protection circuit packs
• 1+1 for DS1 TM circuit packs
• 1+1 for Trans Mux circuit packs
• 1+1 for L2SS, 20G L2SS, and PDH gateway circuit packs
• 1+1 TPT and 1+1 port TPT
• 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 2:2 for AC power input cards in a 7-slot Type 2 shelf
• Redundant (A and B) DC power to separate power input cards for shelves
equipped with DC power input cards
• Redundant (A and B) power to shelves with integrated AC or DC power
inputs
Synchronization
Synchronization is a network level application that ensures all nodes across a
network can trace back to the same clock source. Within a single node,
synchronization prevents buffer overflow or underflow which avoids bit errors.
• For 7-slot shelf types, LEDs on the cooling fan module provide visual
alarm indicators of active alarms at the shelf level. Also for the 7-slot
optical Type 2 shelf (NTK503KA), redundant visual alarm indicators exist
on the Shelf processor w/access panel (SPAP-2) w/2xOSC 2xSFP
(NTK555NA).
• For 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, LEDs on the cooling fan module
provide visual alarm indicators of active alarms at the shelf level.
• For 2-slot shelf types (NTK503MAE5 and NTK503MAE5 variants), LEDs
on the integrated Access Panel provide visual alarm indicators of active
alarms at the shelf level. For 2-slot shelf Type 2 (NTK503LA variant), LEDs
on the Shelf processor w/access panel (SPAP) or Shelf processor
w/access panel (SPAP-2) w/2xOSC 2xSFP provide visual alarm indicators
of active alarms at the shelf level.
• Visual alarms interface on the access panel provides a summary of active
alarms at the shelf level.
• LEDs and an external alarm interface port on the BIP provide a summary
of active alarms for all 6500-7 packet-optical, 7-slot, and 14-slot shelves in
a bay.
For more information about LED definition and external alarm interface, see
the appropriate sections in the Chapter 3, “Shelf and equipment descriptions”.
The 6500 stores active alarms, alarm history, events, and logs which can be
viewed from the Site Manager user interface.
The 6500 also allows the user to provision (enable/disable) alarm points
through the alarm profile feature in the Site Manager craft user interface. For
more information, see Part 2 of 6500 Planning, NTRN10DA (chapter 5).
Performance monitoring
Performance monitoring (PM) refers to the continuous collection, analysis and
reporting of the performance data of a monitored entity. This monitoring allows
early detection of service degradations and facilitates preventive maintenance
without interruption of service. PM can also be used to facilitate trouble/fault
isolation. Performance monitoring is performed on all in-service
optical/electrical interface ports.
Operational measurements
For MSPP services, the GE, 10GE, 10/100BT, L2SS, 20G L2SS, PDH
gateway, and RPR circuit packs collect operational measurements (OMs),
which contain a set of counters not specific to any LAN interface type. For
Broadband services, the 10GEL WT, 10G OTR, 10G OTSC, 2x10G OTR,
4x10G OTR, SuperMux, L2 MOTR, eMOTR, FLEX MOTR, 8xOTN Flex
MOTR, (1+8)xOTN Flex MOTR, 40G MUX OCI, 10x10GE MUX, 10x10G
MUX, and 100GE OCI circuit packs collect operational measurements on their
Ethernet, Fiber Channel, FLEX, and WAN facilities, which contain a set of
counters. For Packet Optical Transport System (POTS) services (OTN
transport and switched services and Packet (PKT) transport and switched
services), the 40G OTN XCIF, 100G PKT/OTN XCIF, 10x10G PKT/OTN I/F,
and 16xFLEX OTN I/F circuit packs also collect operational measurements
(OMs). For more information, see Part 2 of 6500 Planning, NTRN10DA
(chapter 5).
Data management
Data management deals with the management and protection of provisioning
data within the network element. The provisioning data that is managed,
distributed, and replicated is divided into two sets:
• non-SP slot-specific provisioning data—all data required to set up
services and traffic on provisionable traffic, service, or cross-connect
circuit packs in a slot. This data includes:
The network element is responsible for the resilience of its provisioning data.
Each piece of provisioning data exists on at least two separate circuit packs
within the network element. Each circuit pack contains a copy of its own
slot-specific data. The shelf processor (SP) in slot 15 (for a 6500-7
packet-optical, 2-slot, 7-slot, or 14-slot shelf type) or slot 41 (for 32-slot shelf
type) contains a master copy of all data (i.e., slot-specific data and
shelf-specific provisioning data) on the shelf. Replication of persistent data
ensures quick provisioning data recovery over SP, cross-connect, or interface
circuit pack restarts/replacements, as well as shelf power-down. How the data
is replicated on a network element depends on whether SP Redundancy is
provisioned or not.
If there is SP redundancy, both SPs contain a master copy of all data (i.e.,
slot-specific data and shelf-specific provisioning data) on the shelf. When one
of the redundant SPs is removed, the remaining SP becomes the active SP.
When a second SP is inserted, data is copied from the active SP to the newly
inserted SP and kept synchronized thereafter.
When SP redundancy is provisioned and two SPs are present in the shelf,
only one SP must be replaced at a time. After replacing one of the SPs, wait
for five minutes to allow the synchronization of provisioning data to complete.
Removing both SPs at the same time can lead to data loss and traffic outage.
Each circuit pack equipped in the shelf contains a copy of its own slot-specific
data.
The two non-SP circuit packs, where the shelf-specific and SP slot-specific
provisioning data is stored, are chosen using an algorithm based on the
amount of persistent storage available on a circuit pack, and then by slot
number (lowest to highest). Some examples of backup priority based on the
amount of persistent storage on a circuit pack type, are given in the ordered
list below:
• (highest priority) Layer 2 (L2 MOTR, 20G L2SS, and RPR), SRA, SAM,
ESAM, 4xOPS, and SuperMux circuit packs
• EPL (GE, 10/100 BT FE, and 10GE), TransMux, STM-1e (working only),
2xOSC, and Broadband circuit packs
• cross-connect (XC and MXC) circuit packs
• (lowest priority) any LIM type (i.e., LIM (C-Band and L-Band), MLA
(C-Band and L-Band), MLA2, MLA2 w/VOA, MLA3, SLA), XLA, FGA,
eMOTR, and WSS w/OPM circuit packs.
Attention: The L2SS, PDH gateway, and passive equipment in passive slots
(such as OSC Filter (1516.9 nm), CMD44, OMD4, OMX, BMD, UBMD2,
MBMD2, DSCM, PPC6, OMDF4, OMDF8, BS, OSCF) cannot be used for
database back up.
Autodiscovery
The 6500 supports various mechanisms that discover and provide information
on how the components in the network are connected at different layers
(layer-0, layer-1 and layer-2). This information is used to build a topological
view of the network. This section defines related terminology and describes
these mechanisms.
Definitions
Auto-discovery refers to a mechanism that automatically discovers
adjacencies at a given layer of the network.
Adjacency refers to two components that are one hop away at a given layer of
the network.
Layer-0 auto-discovery
There are two mechanisms for auto-discovery at layer-0: Line adjacencies
and Service-photonic layer interoperability (SPLI). For more information, refer
to 6500 Packet-Optical Platform Photonic Layer Guide, NTRN15DA.
Line adjacencies
LIM line adjacencies are automatically discovered across the OSC and
provide the actual far end address of the LIM of the neighboring site. This
mechanism is not user-configurable.
Reducing the number of sites reporting alarms is done by the network level
alarm correlation feature. The network level alarm correlation feature in 6500
is an extension to site level alarm correlation (i.e. it is not possible to have
network level alarm correlation without site level alarm correlation). The
Network level alarm correlation feature uses the provisioned or discovered
address between the transponder and the CMD to share fault information
between the service layer and the photonic layer, allowing suppression of
symptomatic alarms (downstream and lower level alarms) in the network
when the system can identify that they are caused by another alarmed
condition. Therefore, network level alarm correlation reduces the number of
alarms reported at each network to a minimum.
Unlike the site level alarm correlation feature where downstream alarm
masking is done on a per port (all wavelengths) basis only (and hence the lack
of per wavelength fault propagation resulted in limited ability to mask in the
Mux direction and therefore fault information does not propagate between
nodes), the network level alarm correlation feature reduces the number of
alarms reported at each network by propagating per wavelength fault status
based on wavelength topology through shelves/OTSs (SWT) and also from
OTS-to-OTS. The site level alarm correlation feature requires the system to
have full knowledge of topology and connectivity within the network, including
channel routing at OADM sites. Figure 2-15 on page 2-149 shows an example
of network level alarm correlation.
Once Alarm Correlation is enabled, this automatically enables both Site level
and Network level alarm correlation features (e.g. one feature cannot exist
without the other feature). The alarm correlation functionality can be
enabled/disabled on a per shelf basis using the Node Information application
in the Configuration menu of Site Manager.
For more information on site level alarm correlation and network level alarm
correlation feature, refer to Part 1 of Fault Management - Alarm Clearing,
323-1851-543. For corresponding procedures, refer to Administration and
Security, 323-1851-301.

Layer-1 auto-discovery
There are two mechanisms for auto-discovery at layer-1: Neighbor Discovery
Protocol (NDP) and ISIS-based auto-discovery (IIH).
Layer-2 auto-discovery
There are two mechanisms for auto-discovery at layer-2: SONMP topology
discovery and 802.1ab LLDP topology discovery.
• When a device is initialized, it starts from the “new” state. It stays in this
state for 3 consecutive hello intervals (30 seconds) and then transitions to
the “heartbeat” state, where it both transmits and receives segment hello
packets.
• Whenever there is a change to the topology table, such as an entry being
added or deleted, the device transitions from the “heartbeat” state to the
“topology changed” state for a period of 6 hello intervals (60 seconds) and
then transitions back to the “heartbeat” state if there are no more changes
to the topology table during this period.
For more information about SONMP support on the 6500, see 6500
Packet-Optical Platform Data Application Guide, NTRN15BA.
For more information about 802.1ab LLDP support on the 6500, see 6500
Packet-Optical Platform Data Application Guide (NTRN15BA) and Service
Aware Operating System (SAOS)-based documents (323-1851-6xx).
Autoprovisioning TTI
OTU and ODU TTI autoprovisioning feature provides autoprovisioning of the
TTI (Trail Trace Identifier) at the ODU and OTU layers for OTUTTP, ODUTTP,
ODUCTP, OTM4, OTM2, OTM1, and OTM3 facilities. Autoprovisioning the TTI
provides the following benefits:
• eliminates the time needed to provision the transmitted TTI.
• eliminates the need to create custom TTIs and maintain them.
• reduces the chance of error in provisioning the expected receive TTI since
the auto generated TTIs follow a systematic and logical convention
eliminating the need to remember made up TTIs.
• provides a quick way to verify that the expected TTI matches the actual
received TTI since no manual provisioning of the expected TTI value is
needed.

Unlike 14-slot shelves where 14 traffic-carrying slots are arranged in one row,
the 32-slot shelf contains 32 traffic-carrying slots in two rows. Therefore, the
32-slot shelf assembly can accommodate more traffic-carrying circuit packs
and hence increasing 6500 fabric capacity from 240 Gbit/s to 640 Gbit/s.
Figure 3-11 on page 3-32) and unlike 14-slot shelf assemblies where the
shelves can be installed in 19” racks, the 32-slot shelves must be installed in
either 21” or 23” racks.
The 32-slot packet-optical shelf assembly allows the users to maximize the
reuse of the existing 6500 PKT/OTN/MSPP/Broadband/Photonic circuit packs
while being able to deploy a larger and denser shelf configuration.
Table 3-4
Differences between NTK603AAE5 and NTK603AB variants of 32-slot shelf
The 32-slot packet-optical shelf must be equipped with the following common
equipment:
• Shelf processor (SP-2 Dual CPU) circuit pack (NTK555FAE5)
• Shelf processor (SP-2) circuit pack (NTK555EAE5)
• Two 3x60A Power Input Cards (breakered) (NTK605CAE5) or two 3x60A

Figure 3-13
6500 shelf layout (7-slot optical Type 2 shelf assembly; NTK503KA is shown equipped with AC
Power Input Cards)
The 7-slot shelf assembly is used in applications where only optical services
will be deployed. The height of a 7-slot optical shelf assembly are
dimensionally different from the 2-slot, 14-slot, and 32-slot shelf assemblies
(see Figure 3-14 on page 3-39) but the width and depth are similar to 14-slot
shelf assemblies. The 7-slot shelves can be installed in ETSI (535 mm), 19 in.
and 23 in. racks.
The 7-slot optical shelf (NTK503PAE5 variant) has a slot for a Shelf Processor
circuit pack and a separate slot for an Access Panel. The shelf supports DC
Power Input Cards with A/B feeds up to 40A.
The 7-slot optical Type 2 shelf (NTK503KA variant) has a slot for a Shelf
Processor w/Access Panel circuit pack. The shelf supports the DC Power
Input Card (A/B feeds up to 50A) but can alternatively be equipped with two,
three or four 100-240 Vac Power Input Cards each connected to a separate
AC feed. The 7-slot optical Type 2 shelf equipped with AC Power Input Cards
is used in applications where DC power is not available or as an alternative to
using a shelf with an external rectifier. The 7-slot optical Type 2 variant also
supports airflow deflection configuration for front-only air intake and
rear-only/front-only exhaust in rack types other than EIA 19 inch.
The 7-slot shelf has a slot integrated into the shelf which must be equipped
with a cooling fan module (also called cooling unit). Each 7-slot shelf assembly
requires one cooling unit which contains four integrated fans that are not
field-replaceable (e.g. even a single fan failure requires replacement of the
entire cooling fan module).
The differences between the 7-slot shelf types accommodating both the
common equipment and interface circuit packs are shown in Table 3-5:

Note 1: This equipment is not integrated in the shelf and therefore field-replaceable.
Note 2: The 7-slot shelf does not support/require cross-connect (XC) or MXC circuit packs. As a result,
the MSPP circuit packs are not supported in a 7-slot shelf since MSPP circuit packs require XC or MXC
circuit packs to function.
Note 3: The 7-slot shelf does not support OTN I/F, PKT I/F, and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs.
Note 4: There are two ejector latches on SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit packs (one at each end of the SPAP-2
w/2xOSC circuit pack). During SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit pack removal, you must unscrew both
thumbscrews and use the ejector latches to pull the circuit pack out. The size of the SPAP-2 w/2xOSC
faceplate is slightly wider than other 6500 circuit packs so SPAP-2 w/2xOSC can not be inserted in the
7-slot (NTK503PAE5 variant), 14-slot, or 32-slot shelf. In addition, do not force any other circuit pack into
slot 15 of NTK503KA variant of the 7-slot shelf.
Note 5: You must use NTK509EPE6 as the air filter for the NTK503PAE5 variant of the 7-slot shelf. You
must use NTK509EK as the air filter for the NTK503KA variant of the 7-slot shelf.

— Shelf processor (SP-2) circuit packs (NTK555CAE5 or NTK555EAE5),
or
— shelf processor (SP-2 Dual CPU) circuit packs (NTK555FAE5)
• Two DC Power Input Cards with A/B feeds up to 60A and can be
— 50A Power Input Card (breakered) - 2-Wire D-Sub Input (NTK505CC),
— Fused Power Input Card - 2-Wire D-Sub Input, Max 50A (NTK505EC)
— 60A Power Input Card (breakered) (NTK505CAE5),
— 60A Power Input Card (breakerless) (NTK505DAE5), or
— Fused Power Input Card - Max 60A (NTK505EAE5)
Attention: When equipping the shelf with a 60A-rated power input cards
with 2-hole lug-landing, 1U of space above the shelf must be reserved for the
power cable connection and routing.

Note 5: The 2-slot shelf does not support OTN I/F, PKT I/F, and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs.
Note 6: This equipment is integrated in the shelf and not field-replaceable.
Note 7: OTN Flex MOTR 8xSFP interface circuit pack function is integrated on the integrated shelf
processor/access panel of the NTK503MAE5 and NTK503NAE5 variants of a 2-slot shelf in slot 15.
Note 8: There is a reset push button for power-cycle reset of slot 15. This is a user defined push button
switch to remove power from the integrated shelf processor, access panel, and 8xOTN Flex MOTR (in
case of NTK503MAE5 and NTK503MAE5 shelf variants), SPAP-2 w/2xOSC or SPAP circuit pack (in
case of NTK503LA shelf variant) located on slot 15 when momentarily pressed. Power to slot 15 is
restored when this reset button is released. The cooling fan module and traffic-carrying slots (slots 1
and 2) power are not affected by activation of this reset button. Avoid pressing the reset button with a
sharp pointy object and instead use devices such as paper clips.
Note 9: Since the shelf processor/access panel and power supply unit are integrated in NTK503MAE5
and NTK503NAE5 variants of a 2-slot shelf, a failure of one of these equipment requires replacement
of the entire shelf. Also the OTN FLEX MOTR function offered by OTN Flex MOTR 8xSFP circuit pack
(NTK532BAE5) is integrated in NTK503MAE5 and NTK503NAE5 variants of a 2-slot shelf and this
means a failure of this integrated part requires replacement of the entire shelf.
Note 10: There are two ejector latches on SPAP circuit packs (one at each end of the SPAP circuit
pack). On SPAP circuit pack removal, you must unscrew both thumbscrews and use the ejector latches
to pull the circuit pack out. The size of the SPAP faceplate is slightly wider than other 6500 circuit packs
so SPAP cannot be inserted in the 6500-7 packet-optical, 7-slot (NTK503PAE5 variant), 14-slot, or
32-slot shelf. In addition, do not force any other circuit pack into slot 15 of NTK503LA variant of the 2-slot
shelf.
Note 11: There are two ejector latches on SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit packs (one at each end of the
SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit pack). During SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit pack removal, you must unscrew both
thumbscrews and use the ejector latches to pull the circuit pack out. The size of the SPAP-2 w/2xOSC
faceplate is slightly wider than other 6500 circuit packs so SPAP-2 w/2xOSC can not be inserted in the
6500-7 packet-optical, 7-slot (NTK503PAE5 variant), 14-slot, or 32-slot shelf. In addition, do not force
any other circuit pack into slot 15 of the NTK503LA variant of the 2-slot shelf.
The 2-slot optical Type 2 shelf (NTK503LA variant) must be equipped with the
following common equipment:
• Shelf processor w/access panel (SPAP) circuit pack (NTK555LA) or Shelf
processor w/access panel (SPAP-2) w/2xOSC 2xSFP circuit pack
(NTK555NA); only applicable to NTK503LA variant as shelf
processor/access panel is an integrated part of NTK503MAE5 and
NTK503NAE5 variants
• Power Input Card (breakerless) - 2-Wire D-Sub Input, Max 10A
(NTK505TA), 24 Vdc Power Input Card (breakered) - 2-Wire D-Sub Input
(NTK505TR), or AC Power Input Card (100 - 240 Vac) (NTK505SB); only
applicable to NTK503LA variant as power supply unit is an integrated part
of NTK503MAE5 and NTK503NAE5 variants
• Cooling fan module (NTK507NA); the 2-slot shelf has a slot integrated into
the shelf which must be equipped with a cooling fan module. Each 2-slot
shelf assembly requires one cooling unit which contains three integrated
fans that are not field-replaceable (e.g. even a single fan failure requires
replacement of the entire cooling fan module). Note that the NTK507NA
cooling fan module can also be also used in the NTK503MAE5 and
NTK503NAE5 2-slot shelf variants but only the NTK507NA can be used in
the NTK503LA shelf variant.
For 2-slot shelves where SP, AP, and power supply unit are integrated and a
2-slot shelf assembly is shown in Figure 3-17 as an example (NTK503MAE5
variant). For 2-slot shelves where SP, AP, and power supply unit are not
integrated, a 2-slot shelf assembly is shown in Figure 3-18 as an example
(NTK503LA variant).

Figure 3-18
6500 shelf layout (2-slot optical Type 2 shelf assembly; NTK503LA)
The 2-slot shelf assembly allows the users to maximize the reuse of the
existing 6500 Broadband/Photonic circuit packs while being able to deploy a
smaller shelf configuration. The 2-slot shelf assembly does not support MSPP
or some Photonic circuit packs.
The 2-slot shelf assembly is used in applications where only optical services
will be deployed. The height, width, and depth of a 2-slot shelf assembly are
dimensionally different from the 6500-7 packet-optical, 7-slot, 14-slot and
32-slot shelf assemblies (see Figure 3-19, Figure 3-20 on page 3-50, and
Figure 3-21 on page 3-51) and it can be installed in ETSI (535 mm), 19 in.,
and 23 in. racks. However unique to the 2-slot AC shelf variant
(NTK503NAE5) and 2-slot optical Type 2 shelf variant (NTK503LA), wall
mounting installation is also supported, resulting in the traffic-carrying circuit
packs being vertically aligned.

Backplane
All interface circuit packs, access panel interfaces, cooling system, and
electrical interfaces interconnect through the backplane which provides a
number of mechanisms for inter-card communications and control.
• a link for sending status information between the shelf processors and the
interface circuit packs
• a link for sending status information between adjacent slots and between
ports on interface circuit pack slots and the cross-connect circuit pack
slots
• Ethernet – 100Base-T link between each circuit pack and the shelf
processors used for OAM
• control signaling – dedicated links between circuit packs to provide simple
presence, inventory, and control signaling
Shelf ID module
The 6500 shelf also contains two shelf ID (SID) redundant modules that
contain the serial number, version, and PEC information about the shelf. The
6500 software uses the SID to determine the type and version of the shelf. The
SID information is displayed in Site Manager through the Inventory screen.
The SID modules are located on the shelf backplane behind the access panel.
Shelf cover
An optional shelf cover is available for additional protection and security. The
shelf cover provides visual access to the LEDs on the
• circuit packs (all shelf types; 6500-7 packet-optical, 2-slot, 7-slot, 14-slot,
and 32-slot)
• MIC (only 14-slot shelf)
• Access panel (only 32-slot shelf)
so that the user can view the status of each circuit pack and the shelf level
alarm status. The shelf cover also provides a clip that can be used to insert a
lock.
Figure 3-22 on page 3-63 shows an example for the 14-slot shelf with the shelf
cover on (upper cover NTK509CB shown).
Figure 3-22
Example: 14-slot shelf cover
The shelf cover can only be used with optical fiber having a 42.5 mm long
strain relief boot.
The use of optical fiber with longer strain relief boots may impact the bend
radius of the optical fibers routing off the circuit pack faceplates when closing
the shelf cover. For the correct optical fibers to be used with the 6500, see
Planning - Ordering Information, 323-1851-151.
A shelf cover is also available for the electrical I/O interface area in a 14-slot
optical/front electrical shelf, converged optical/front electrical shelf, or metro
front electrical shelf. For PEC information, see Planning - Ordering
Information, 323-1851-151.
Synchronization hardware
The 6500 synchronization system spans across several components and
consist of the following:
• cross-connect or MXC circuit pack that contains a Stratum 3 level (freerun)
shelf clock and BITS interfaces (see Common Equipment,
323-1851-102.1)
• OC-n/STM-n or SuperMux interface circuit packs, which can recover
timing from incoming signals and transfer it to the XC circuit pack (see
OC-n/STM-n Circuit Packs, 323-1851-102.3 and Broadband, SuperMux,
and OTN FLEX MOTR Circuit Packs, 323-1851-102.5)
• Ethernet sync messaging channel (ESMC) is supported on ETH10G
facilities on L2 MOTR and FLEX MOTR. These circuit packs can select
either OTM2 or the underlying ETH10G facility as timing references.
However, only ETH10G supports ESMC
• access panel, which is the location of the shelf BITS inputs/outputs (see
Common Equipment, 323-1851-102.1)
• shelf processor that provides the user interface (see Common Equipment,
323-1851-102.1)
Up to four timing sources (in the case of shelf timing group) and up to two
timing sources (in the case of independent timing group) may be selected with
automatic protection switching between them. A mix of Line and BITS inputs
is also supported. For detailed information on synchronization options and
Sync Messaging support, see Chapter 5, "Synchronization" in Part 2 of
"Configuration-Provisioning and Operating", 323-1851-310.

Fiber Fiber
Optical fibers/cable leave the faceplate of the interfaces and drop through 60
degrees (for fixed optics and XFPs/SFPs except SuperMux), 90 degrees (for
SFP of fixed optics in SuperMux), 90 degrees (for SFP+ in 10x10GE and CFP
in 100GE OCI/100G), or 90 degrees (for DPOs) into the fiber/cable routing
channel and are routed through both sides of the shelf. Each side can handle
half of the total shelf optical fiber/cable capacity. Optical fibers/cables are
diversely run through the shelf and frame:
• high speed (line-side) can be segregated from low speed (client-side)
• east and west optical fibers/cables are separate
Attention: Fixed attenuators (if required) must be added to the patch panel
or within a fiber storage tray and not on the optical interfaces on the front of
the circuit packs.
The fiber/cable routing channel at the bottom the 6500 shelf provides
sufficient space to route 2.0 mm outside diameter jacketed optical fibers or
RG179DT cables for all circuit packs in all shelf slots. While using greater than
2.0 mm outside diameter jacketed optical fiber is acceptable, it may limit fiber
channel capacity for the denser port optical circuit packs. For the correct
optical fibers/cables to be used with the 6500, see Planning - Ordering
Information, 323-1851-151. Refer to Part 2 of Installation, 323-1851-201 for
the instructions on how to connect the optical fibers to the 6500.
Fiber manager
The fiber manager is an external drawer used to manage slack fiber (see
Figure 3-25 on page 3-68). The fiber manager:
• is a 1 U high rack-mounted external drawer
• is used wherever slack fiber needs to be managed
• contains 16 flip-up fiber spools (each fiber spool can manage 1.6 m of
fiber, maximum 3 mm diameter)
• can manage a maximum of 16 fibers (at 2 m each)
• has a fiber capacity of 240 ft (73.15 m)

When deploying the optical/rear shelf assembly NTK503CA, one cooling unit
and air plenum can support two optical/rear shelf assemblies.
CAUTION
Risk of traffic loss
Shelves that are configured to exclusively exhaust air out
the front may affect the inlet air temperature of nearby
shelves. If front exhaust is required and a 6500 shelf is
equipped in the same rack as one or more other shelves
configured for front exhaust, refer to “Front exhaust
considerations” on page 2-64 for details.
CAUTION
Risk of traffic loss
For any shelf that is configured for rear-only exhaust in a
Telcordia GR-63-CORE (NEBS) operating environment,
provide the minimal clearance as specified in the standard
between the back of the shelf and any other shelf, wall or
obstruction.

The cooling unit contains three fans and draws air from the bottom of the shelf
through an air filter and vents through the front, rear, or top of the shelf
depending on the cooling unit.
The 14-slot shelf also supports high flow cooling fan modules (NTK507LS,
NTK507MS, NTK507LDE5, and NTK507MDE5) for front and rear venting.
High flow cooling fan modules are required when multiple high performance
circuit packs such as eMOTR, SuperMux, 20G L2SS, 100G OCLD, 100G
WaveLogic 3 OCLD, Flex2 WaveLogic 3 OCLD, 100GE OCI, 100G OCI,

40/43G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40G MUX OCI circuit packs are equipped in
a 14-slot shelf. Although power, control and alarm signals are
backwards-compatible with the existing regular flow cooling fan modules, the
high-performance fans provide increased air flow in high flow cooling fan
modules. Also in the high flow cooling fan modules, new louvers close in the
event of a fan failure in order to prevent back-flow of air into the fan module.

The fans operate at variable speeds depending on the cooling required. The
fan speed is controlled by sensors which measure the ambient temperature.
The regular flow fans operate at only two speeds, where the temperature
threshold at which the fans switch from low to high speed is approximately
40oC. In the case of the high flow fans (NTK507LDE5 and NTK507MDE5) and
high flow fans (type 3) (NTK507LS and NTK507MS), the fan speed increases
linearly with ambient temperature, from minimum speed at approximately
30oC to maximum speed at approximately 45oC.
If one or more of the fans fail or is removed, the remaining fans operate at
maximum speed.
The fans operate at variable speeds depending on the cooling required. Fan
speed depends on ambient temperature and altitude.
A fault tolerant fan control circuit ensures that if one of the integrated fans in a
cooling fan module fails, then all the remaining fans in both cooling fan
modules increase in speed to compensate.
CAUTION
Risk of traffic loss
Shelves that are configured to exclusively exhaust air out
the front may affect the inlet air temperature of nearby

The fans operate at variable speeds depending on the cooling required. Fan
speed is controlled based on ambient temperature. A fault tolerant fan control
circuit ensures that if one of the integrated fans fails, then the remaining fans
increase in speed to compensate. For the NTK503LA variant of the 2-slot
shelf, if the SPAP or SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit pack is extracted, the fans will
operate at high-speed (but will not activate the "Fail" lamp on the fan module).

OCLD or Wavelength-Selective 40G OCLD and 40G UOCLD circuit packs for regenerator applications and since
40G UOCLD circuit pack is a double-slot circuit pack, the maximum number of 40G OCLD or
Wavelength-Selective 40G OCLD circuit packs is two when paired with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 6500-7
packet-optical shelf type, four when paired with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 14-slot shelf type, 10 when paired
with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 32-slot shelf type, or two when paired with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 7-slot

Note 37: This circuit pack is only supported in NTK503LA variant of 2-slot shelf type.
Note 38: This circuit pack is only supported on the NTK503LA variant of the 2-slot shelf type when equipped with
an SPAP-2 w/2xOSC circuit pack.
Note 39: Although you can put up to two 40G OCLD, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40G MUX OCI (NTK525CFE5 variant)
circuit packs in each 2-slot optical Type 2 shelf type, you need to pair a 40G OCLD with a 40G+ CFP OCI (OTR
applications) or with a 40G MUX OCI (MOTR applications), therefore the real number of useful 40G OCLD, 40G+
CFP OCI, or 40G MUX OCI circuit packs is one in each 2-slot optical Type 2 shelf type (not 2).
Note 40: Although you can put up to six 40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit packs in each 6500-7
packet-optical shelf type, up to fourteen 40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit packs in each 14-slot
shelf type, up to thirty-two 40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit packs in each 32-slot shelf type, or up
to seven 40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit packs in each 7-slot shelf type, you need to pair each
40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit pack with a 40G OCLD, Wavelength-Selective 40G OCLD, or
40G+ CFP OCI, circuit pack, therefore the real number of useful 40G OCI, 40G+ CFP OCI, or 40/43G OCI circuit
packs is three in each 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, seven in each 14-slot shelf type, 16 in each 32-slot shelf
type, or three in each 7-slot shelf type (or even less if mated with 40G UOCLDs).
Note 41: Although you can put up to six 40G MUX OCI circuit packs in each 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, up
to fourteen 40G MUX OCI circuit packs in each 14-slot shelf type, up to thirty-two 40G MUX OCI circuit packs in
each 32-slot shelf type, or up to seven 40G MUX OCI circuit packs in each 7-slot shelf type, you need to pair each
40G MUX OCI circuit pack with a 40G OCLD or Wavelength-Selective 40G OCLD circuit pack, therefore the real
number of useful 40G MUX OCI circuit packs is three (not six) in each 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, seven (not
14) in each 14-slot shelf type, 16 (not 32) in each 32-slot shelf type, or three (not seven) in each 7-slot shelf type.
You can also use a pair of 40G MUX OCI and 40G UOCLD circuit packs and since 40G UOCLD circuit pack is a
double-slot circuit pack, the maximum number of 40G MUX OCI circuit packs is two when paired with 40G UOCLD
circuit packs in a 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, four when paired with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 14-slot
shelf type, 10 when paired with 40G UOCLD circuit packs in a 32-slot shelf type, or two when paired with 40G
UOCLD circuit packs in a 7-slot shelf type.
Note 42: This circuit pack is a double-slot circuit pack and therefore not supported in
— slots 6, 8, and 14 of 14-slot converged shelf types.
— slots 6, 7, 8, and 14 of 14-slot packet-optical shelf type.
— slots 8, 18, 28, and 38 of 32-slot shelf types.
— slot 6 of 7-slot shelf types.

Note: Refer to “6500 services” on page 3-135 to find out about different services that are supported in
this release of 6500 for the circuit packs in this table.
6500 services
This release of 6500 supports the POTS (OTN and PKT), MSPP, Broadband,
and Photonic services for different OTN I/F, PKT I/F, MSPP, Broadband, and
Photonic circuit packs listed in Table 3-2. The combination of any of these four
services in a 6500 shelf is also supported. When OTN I/F, PKT I/F, or MSPP
circuit packs are used in a 14-slot shelf type or OTN I/F or PKT I/F circuit packs
are used in a 6500-7 packet-optical shelf type, the use of cross-connect circuit
packs in slots 7 and 8 is mandatory. When OTN I/F, PKT I/F, or MSPP circuit
packs are used in a 32-slot shelf type, the use of cross-connect circuit packs
in slots 9 and 10 is mandatory. OTN I/F, PKT I/F, and MSPP circuit packs are
not supported in a 2-slot or 7-slot shelf type.
• Figure 3-29 shows an example which represents a layout of the converged
MSPP/Broadband/Photonic services and the slot numbering scheme in a
14-slot shelf (OTN I/F, PKT I/F, and PKT/OTN I/F circuit packs can be also
used).

Filler cards/modules
The filler card is required to fill any empty slots. Although the filler card does
