Plastic Injection Molding Tolerance Guide

This document provides tolerance guidelines for plastic injection molding. It lists dimensional tolerances for various plastic materials based on part size, as well as tolerances for straightness/flatness and hole diameters. Dimensional tolerances range from +/-0.030mm for precision parts under 20mm to +/-0.375mm for commercial parts over 100mm, with fiber-filled plastics allowing tighter tolerances. Straightness/flatness tolerances range from +/-0.150mm for precision reinforced plastics to +/-1.500mm for commercial polyethylene parts over 100mm. Hole diameter tolerances range from +/-0.030mm to +/-0.150mm depending on the material, hole size, and precision requirements.

Straightness / Flatness Tolerances

Warpage is due to the difference between the mold shrinkage rates in the direction of the mold flow and across the flow. The effect is more noticeable in fiber filled plastics. The major
factor is different wall thickness as a thick section normally shrinks more than a thinner section. Mold design, gate position and process control can minimize this effect, however, the basic
material behavior cannot be corrected 100%. Therefore a practical tolerance must be negotiated with the respective production units.
