having a server is also called a client server network. A LAN having no dedicated server is called
peer to peer network where any of the computer works like a server.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Metropolitan Area network is a type of network that connects the computers into the city. The
coverage span of MAN is greater than LAN but less than WAN. It is similar to the LAN with
structure and layout. The interconnection network medium is fiber distributed to carry high
amount of data traffic. A typical structural layout of MAN is presented with figure 2.

Wide Area Network (WAN)
Wide Area Network is a type of network where a large numbers of computers connected
indirectly to the network. The span area of WAN is huge geographical area such as a state to
whole world. Internet is best example of a Wide Area Network. WAN connects two or more
Local Area Networks. In general there is 1 kilometer or more diameter span of a network comes
under the category of WAN. WAN uses the public networks like PSTN (Public Switched
Telephone Network), ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network) and Fiber Optical Network to
connect two or more Local Area Networks. The structural layout of WAN is presented with
figure 2.

Personal Area Network (PAN)
A computer network that is created to a particular user to connect its private computing devices
with the backbone network is called Personal Area Network. Bluetooth network is a type of
PAN. Personal Area Network is used to connect personal communication devices with the
backbone network. Device that is used to connect with PAN is wireless telephone, Bluetooth
headsets, Laptop computer, Smart Phone, Computer printer etc. The structural layout of PAN is
