Tutorial Chapter 2
1) The adiabatic exothermic irreversible gas-phase reaction
2A + B 2C
is to be carried out in a flow reactor for an equimolar feed of A & B. A Levenspiel plot for
this reaction is shown in fig P2-9B.
a) What PFR volume is necessary to achieve 50% conversion? (Ans : 150 000 m3)
b) What CSTR volume is necessary to achieve 50% conversion ( Ans : 50 000 m3)
c) What is the volume of a 2nd CSTR added in series to the 1st CSTR (part b) necessary to
achieve an overall conversion of 80% ( Ans : 150000 m3)
d) What is the volume of a 2nd PFR added in series to the 1st CSTR (part b) to raise the
conversion to 80% (Ans : 90 000 m3)

2) The Exotermic reaction
AB+C
Was carried out adiabatically and the following data recorded:
X 0 0.2 0.4 0.5 0.6 0.8 0.9
-rA(mol/[Link]) 10 16.67 50 50 50 12.5 9.09
The entering molar flowrate of A was 300 mol/min
a) What are the PFR & CSTR volumes necessary to achieve 40% conversion?
b) Over what range of conversions would the CSTR & PFR reactor volumes be
identical?
c) What is the maximum conversion that can be achieved in a 10.5-dm3 CSTR.
d) What is the total volume if a 7.2-dm3 PFR in part (a) is followed in series by a
CSTR to achieve 80% conversion?
e) What is the total volume if a 7.2-dm3 PFR in part (a) is followed in series by a PFR
to achieve 80% conversion?
