Greedy Dog/The Dog and his Shadow: Once there was a hungry dog. He stole a piece of meat from a
butcher’s shop and ran away. There was a stream in his way. He saw his own reflection in the water. He
thought that there was another dog with a piece of meat. He barked at him to get that piece. He lost his
own piece of meat.
Moral: Greed is a curse. / Do not be greedy.
A Bee and a Dove: Once a bee fell in a stream. A dove was looking at the drowning bee from her nest. She
dropped a leaf near the bee. She climbed on the leaf. She dried her wings and flew away. After some days,
a hunter came there. He wanted to shoot the dove. The bee saw all that. The bee stung the hunter’s hand.
His aim was missed and the dove flew away.
Moral: Do good, have good.
The Fox and the Grapes: Once there was a hungry fox. He reached a garden. He saw ripe grapes there. He
wanted to eat them. He jumped again and again but could not reach them. At last, he went away saying,
“The grapes are sour.”
Moral: The grapes are sour.
A Strange Hen/A Farmer and his Hen/A Hen with Golden Egg: Once a farmer had a strange hen. It laid a
golden egg daily. The man was greedy. He wanted to get all the golden eggs at once. He killed the hen.
There was only one egg. He repented over it.
Moral: Don’t be greedy. / Greed is a curse. / It is useless to cry over spilt milk.
Farmer and his Sons: Once there was an old farmer. He had three sons. They always quarreled with one
another. One day the farmer asked them to break a bundle of sticks. They could not break it. Then he
untied it and asked them to break the sticks one by one. They broke all the sticks. He advised them to be
unite in life.
Moral: Union is strength.
A Fox and a Crow: Once a hungry fox was wandering in a forest. He saw a crow. There was a piece of bread
in its beak. He wanted to eat it. He said to the crow, “Your voice is very sweet. Please sing me a song.” The
crow began to caw. As it opened its beak, the piece of meat fell down. The fox ate it up and went away.
Moral: Beware of flatters. / beware of false praise.
Thirsty Crow: Once there was a thirsty crow. He flew here and there in search of water. He saw a pitcher
in the garden. The water was very low in it. He could not drink it. He put some pebbles into it. The water
rose up. He drank it and flew away.
Moral: Where there is a will, there is a way. / Necessity is the mother of invention. / No pain, no gain. / Try,
try again. / God helps those who help themselves.
The Hare and the Tortoise: Once a hare and a tortoise were fast friends. The hare made fun of the slow
speed of the tortoise. One day the tortoise asked him to run a race. They started the race. The hare was
out of sight very soon. On the way, he slept under a shady tree. But the tortoise moved on and reached the
winning post. When the hare woke up and reached there, he was ashamed to see the tortoise.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. / Pride hath a fall.
A Foolish Stag: Once a stag was drinking water at a stream. He saw his shadow in the water. He admired
his beautiful horns and hated his thin legs. Meanwhile, he saw some hounds coming towards him. His thin
legs helped him to run. But his beautiful horns caught in a bush. The hounds reached there and ate him.
Moral: All that glitters is not gold. / Pride hath a fall. / God has made nothing useless.
