Fundamentals of Manufacturing Processes

This document discusses the fundamentals of manufacturing processes. It outlines several primary shaping processes like casting, forming, and powder metallurgy. Joining techniques such as brazing, soldering, and welding are also presented. Additionally, it describes material removal processes like machining and unconventional machining as well as regenerative layer-by-layer processes and super-finishing processes like lapping and polishing. Specific manufacturing techniques such as casting, forming, joining, and machining are then explained in more detail over subsequent pages.

Fundamental Approaches of Manufacturing

DHEERENDRA KUMAR DWIVEDI
MECHANICAL & INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

1
Purpose of Manufacturing
• Making useable products for human being having
required attributes
– size and shape
– Surface finish and controlled tolerance
– Properties and characteristics for prolong life

2
Fundamental Approaches of
Manufacturing
• Primary shaping: casting, forming, powder metallurgy
• Joining: brazing, soldering and welding
• Material removal process: metal cutting, unconventional
machining
• Regenerative processes: layer by layer approach
• Super-finishing processes: lapping, honing, polishing
• Improving properties: heat treatment, coating, case hardening
3
Regenerative process
• Production of solid products using layer-by-
layer approach of raw material
– Liquid: stereo-lithography
– Power: selective sintering
– Sheet: laminated objects
– Wire: fused deposition
It uses CAD, CAM and Rapid Prototyping systems
4
Casting
BASIC REQUIREMENTS

• Mold Cavity
• Melting Process
• Pouring Technique
• Solidification Process
• Mold Removal
• Cleaning, Finishing, and Inspection
Forming

6
Joining
• A positive (addition) process used for
assembling different members to get
desired the configuration. FUSION WELD
• Joint can be temporary or permanent in
nature produced by mechanical or atomic
bond.

ADHESIVE JOINING SPOT WELD

GAS WELDING

BRAZE WELD
MECH. JOINTS SOLDERING
Machining
• Machining: A subtractive process
used to get desired shape, size, and
finish by removing surplus material
in the form of chips by a cutting
tool and by providing suitable
relative motion between the
workpiece and cutting tool
• Cutting tool: removes excess
material
