Common Methods Used in Language Teaching  The squence starts with a pre-task, followed by a task cyle where the

task, followed by a task cyle where the students plan the task,
gathering language and information to do it and then produce the task. The last phase is
1. Grammar Translation analysing the language they use for the task, making improvements and practising any
language that needs development.
 It teaches people about language but doesn’t help them to communicate effectively with it.
 It focuses on grammar – translation
 Fails to give students opportunities to activate their language knowledge and to use the L2
for communication.

2. Audio Lingualism

 It focuses on describing the grammatical patterns and having students repeat and learn
them.
 Learning is the result of habit-formation
 It has extensive use of drilling
 It is appropiate for low level students

3. PPP (Presentation, Practice and Production)

 The teacher presents the context for the language and explains and demonstratesthe
meaning and form of the new language
 The students then practice the new form before going on to the production stage.
 It is appropiate for teaching simple language at lower levels

4. Communicative Language Learning

 Language is not just patterns of grammar but also involves language functions such as
greeting, thanking, etc. Which students should learn how to perform using a variety of
language exponents. (communicative activities)
 If students get enough exposure to language and if they are motivated then language
learning will take care of itself.
 People learn languages not so that they know about them but so that they can
communicate with those languages.

5. Task Based Learning

 The emphasis is on the task rather than the language.


 The task itself is the main focus as the communicative activities.
