Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards
Introduction
This section of my portfolio outlines the importance of aligning curriculum standards and professional standards in my daily work as a
teacher. In this section, I will define the common standards used in instruction (such as INTASC Standards, NY and Ontario Code of ethics,
common core standards, and DOE & CAEP Standards, ISTE, ILA and ECE standards). I will connect these standards to the artifacts that I have
mentioned in section three of my portfolio. Connecting these standards while teaching is important because it ensures that there is a purpose to my
lessons and follows the ethical standards that a teacher needs to follow. Although we want to ensure that we are creating engaging lessons, we also
need to ensure that our teaching is high quality and meets the needs of the learners.
Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards
INTASC Standards
The Interstate New Teacher Assessment Support Consortium Standards (InTASC Standards) are a set of standards for teachers to follow to
prepare and support new teachers with professional development. The Standards have 10 sections, which are learner development, learning
differences, learning environment, content knowledge, application of content, assessment, planning for instruction, instructional strategies,
professional learning and ethical practice, and leadership and collaboration.
The InTASC standards are important for teachers to follow because it ensures that teachers are considering their learner and the needs of the
students in the classroom, that the teacher understands the content being taught and why they are assessing their students as well as holds them
accountable to continue to grow as an educator through professional development and ethical standards.

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators
The NYS Code of Ethics for Educators are expectations that guide teacher’s professional practice. Educators need to be held to a set of
principles to ensure that they are continuing to act in a certain way as they are representing a school and working with children. This allows
educators to follow their professional judgement, but also allows them to be held accountable if they do not follow these guidelines. There are 6
Principals that are included in the NYS Code of Ethics and they are:
Principle 1: Educators nurture the intellectual, physical, emotional, social and civic potential of every student
Principle 2: Educators create support and maintain challenging learning environment for all
Principal 3: Educators commit to their own learning in order to develop their practice
Principal 4: Educators collaborate with colleagues and other professionals in the interest of their students learning
Principal 5: Educators collaborate with parents and community, building trust and confidentiality

Principal 6: Educators advance an intellectual and ethical foundation of the learning community

Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards
The Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards are in place for the same reason as the NY State ones. The Ontario Ethical Standards are as follows:

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards (ELA, Math and Social Studies)
Common core standards are important because they are the learning foundation for students. The common core standards are what guides
teachers what to teach to their students each year. The standards are developmentally appropriate for each grade level and everything needs to be
taught in the school year. The following artifacts from the previous section are in line with the P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards:

Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum Expectations
The Ontario Ministry of Education also sets out expectations like NY State. These are called curriculum expectations. The curriculum
expectations are created for the same reason as the NY State standards and teachers are expected to follow them for the grade that they are teaching.

DOE Claims & CAEP Standards
DOE Claims are set out by Medaille College and they stand for Department of Education. These claims are set to ensure that there is a high
quality of courses being taught at the college and that the graduates are professionally ready and able to become teachers. The DOE Claims set by
Medaille College are:
Claim 1: Medaille College graduates know the subject matter in their certification area(s)
Claim 2: Medaille College graduates meet the needs of diverse learners through effective pedagogy and best teaching practices
Claim 3: Medaille College graduates are caring educators
The CAEP Standards ensure that teacher candidates have a full understanding of the concepts of teaching and that the post-secondary school they are
attending ensures that their students are ready for the teaching profession upon graduation. The following artifacts from the previous section are in

International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students (ISTE)
The International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students (ISTE) ensures that teachers are using technology for a
purpose. An educator needs to be able to explain to anyone asking why they are teaching what they are, and what is the purpose and academic
reasons for it. Technology is a great thing to incorporate into our lessons, but there needs to be a purpose for it. We cannot just include technology
because we know that students will like it. We need to explain how this technology will enhance our students learning. The following artifacts from
the previous section are in line with the ISTE Standards:

International Literacy Association (ILA) Professional Standards
The International Literacy Association (ILA) Professional Standards are set so that professionals who are teaching reading should know and be able
to assess with their students. The ILA sets standards for teachers to follow when teaching and assessing literacy and reading in the classroom. The
standards are based on performance, knowledge, skills, and effective educational practice. There are six ILA standards, which are foundational
knowledge, Curriculum and Instruction, Assessment and Evaluation, Diversity, Literate Environment, Professional Learning and Leadership. The
following artifacts from the previous section are in line with the ILA Standards:

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
The council for exceptional children (CEC) has developed twelve standards that educators should follow when teaching children of special
needs. These standards are researched based and frequently being updated to stay current. These standards were created to ensure that the diverse
needs of individual learners are being met in the classroom. The following artifacts from the previous section are in line with the CEC standards:

Conclusion
In conclusion, an educator needs to follow certain standards and ethics in their practice as a teacher. They need to ensure that they
have a purpose for their lessons and are following the standards and ethics that are given to them to remain professional. In this
section I have discussed how my eight artifacts align with the InTASC Standards, NY State and Ontario Code of Ethics, New York
and Ontario Curriculum Standards, the Medaille College DOE Claims and CEAP Standards, as well as the ISTE, ILA and CEC
standards for education.
