Teaching Percentages with Techan's Triangle

This lesson plan is for a 6th grade mathematics class on finding percentages when given the rate and base. Students will practice converting between ratios, decimals, fractions and percentages. They will then learn about percentages through examples using real-world contexts like shopping at a mall. Working in groups, students will use manipulatives and word problems to find percentages. Individual practice problems will reinforce the skill before generalizing the process. An assessment with word problems will evaluate learning. For homework, students must complete a table giving the base, rate, and calculated percentage.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE VI

I. Learning Objectives
Cognitive: Find the percentage when the rate and base are given
Psychomotor: Write the data for rate and base using Techan’s triangle
Affective: Strive for one’s best

II. Learning Content

Skill: Finding the percentage when the rate and base are given
Reference: BEC PELC II L 3.2.1 and 3.1
Materials: Powerpoint presentation, flashcards, picture of mall, stalls, manipulative
counters, Techan’s triangle, drill board, activity sheets
Value: Being thrifty and striving for one’s best and perseverance

III. Learning Experiences

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill: Relay – Changing percent to ratio, decimal to percent, fraction to percent, and vice
versa.
a. Have four lines of pupils with the same number of members.
b. Each pupil in front of the line renames the ratio to percent, decimal to percent,
fraction to percent, or vice versa by writing the number on the board as the teacher
flashes the card.
c. The teacher fastens the card on the board in the columns it belongs.
d. As soon as the first player finished writing, he has to touch the next player and do
the same thing.
e. The teacher flashes the next card and repeat letter b-d.
f. The teacher checks the answers and adds the scores after the last player.

2. Review: Use of drill board

Tell whether the underlined number is rate, base or percentage
1. 6 is 25% of 24
2. 20% of 15 is 3
3. 125% of 60 is 75
4. 30 is 50% of 60
5. 60 is 20% of 300
3. Motivation:
Picture of Mall
-Are you familiar with the pictures? What are they?
-Who among you love to go to mall?
-What are the things that you can see in the mall?

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
 Use of Realia
a. Show stalls in the mall wherein products have less or discount.
b. Teacher will ask:
-What are the products that you can see from the stalls?
-What is the difference between the two sets of stalls?
-If you’re going to buy a product, from which stall will you go? Why?
-If you’re going to buy this one (product with discount), how much will you pay?
(Teacher will show money and count together with the pupils)
-How did you get the answer?
-Write the equation on the board.

 Use of Compatible Number through Manipulatives (Counters)

a. Pablo listens very well to the teacher during the discussion of the lesson. When
they were given a five item test, his grade was 80%. How many correct answers did
Pablo get?

1. Who listens very well to the teacher?

2. How many items was their test?
3. What was his grade in the test?
4. If you were Pablo will you also be listening intently to the teacher? Why?
5. Do you think you can get a higher grade than Pablo? How will you do it?
b. Pupils will be grouped into 4. Each group will get their manipulatives of five with
same sizes then answer the following questions.
1. What are the given data? ( Lead the pupils to write the given data inside the
Techan’s triangle)
[Link] is the equation for the problem?

 Use of Word Problems

Group Activity
-Each group will be given an activity card and materials.

 Watching video clips

2. Fixing Skills (Individual Drill-Work)

Solve for the percentage.
a. 3% of 45 is N.
b. 60% of 900 is what number?
c. N is 50% of 150.
d. What is 9% of 270?
e. 8% of 48 is _____.

3. Generalization
How do you find the percentage when the rate and base are given?
How will you write the data using Techan’s triangle?

C. Application
Working by Station

 There will be 4 stations with activities written. Each group will answer the problem in
the station then will go to another station after the signal given by the teacher.
 After doing the activity, each group will then present their work to the whole class.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Answer the following. Write only the letter of the correct answer.

1. What is 12% of 200? T- 18 G- 24

2. N is 1% of 100.
3. 38% of 75 is what number? R- 1 E- 28.5
4. 75% of 12 is _____.
5. 60% of 30 is _____. A- 9
V. Assignment
Complete the table.

Base Rate Percentage

30 10%
50 60%
60 30%
180 150%
200 75%

The drill exercises involve students renaming a ratio to a percentage, a decimal to a percentage, and a fraction to a percentage, or vice versa. This is facilitated through group relay activities where students write answers on a board as they quickly process flash card inputs. Such exercises are designed to promote engagement, speed, and accuracy in conversions between these numerical representations .

Using multiple stations allows the lesson to cater to different learning styles and reinforce objectives through varied contexts and approaches. This structure helps maintain student engagement through diverse tasks while challenging them to apply what they've learned in progressively complex situations, ultimately strengthening their conceptual understanding and application skills .

Assignments are designed to reinforce the in-class activities by providing additional practice in finding percentages with given rates and bases. By completing tables and solving related problems at home, students can solidify their understanding and improve retention of the skills practiced in class, ensuring they meet the learning objectives .

The lesson plan incorporates gamification through its relay drills and group problem-solving activities, which introduce elements of competition and reward. This approach motivates students to engage actively with the material, improves concentration, and fosters a fun learning environment that can enhance student learning outcomes .

The lesson plan encourages student interaction through structured group activities and relay drills where students work together to compete, solve problems, and answer questions. These cooperative activities enable communication, teamwork, and collective problem-solving, fostering a collaborative learning environment .

The lesson plan emphasizes affective skills by encouraging students to strive for their best and be thrifty. This is achieved through problem-solving activities that require effort and perseverance, and through understanding real-life applications of mathematical concepts where these values have tangible benefits .

Activities that involve the use of Techan’s triangle support learning by providing a clear, visual framework for students to organize given data and identify the relationships between the rate, base, and percentage. This method simplifies the problem-solving process, making it easier for students to set up equations and solve for missing values accurately .

The lesson aims to balance content delivery with exploratory learning by combining teacher-led demonstrations with student-centered activities. This approach ensures that students receive the necessary guidance and information while also having opportunities to practice and apply concepts independently. This can lead to deeper learning and better skill retention by addressing different learning preferences and fostering autonomy .

The lesson plan employs strategies like group activities and the use of manipulatives to facilitate understanding of word problems. Students are engaged in small groups to collaborate, discuss, and solve problems using hands-on materials which allows for diverse thinking approaches and peer learning. This multi-faceted strategy helps students practice problem translation and solutions in unfamiliar contexts .

The lesson plan incorporates real-life examples through the use of scenarios that students can relate to, such as calculating discounts and pricing at stalls in a mall. This practical approach helps students visualize the application of percentages in everyday situations, thereby enhancing understanding and retention of the concept .
