The Matrix
(Reaction)
The Matrix shows how Artificial Intelligence created a computer construct (The Matrix) of our
present day world and, through a hardwire directly into the brain, fed it to us humans who
were, in reality, kept in incubators and used for their energy output as a power source for the
Artificial Intelligence. In other words, our "reality" exists ONLY in our minds. Everything we
"experience"; everything we "do" - it's all just a dream! And that humans are in a “dream
world” where we are blinded from the truth. But a small band of FREED humans live in the
real world and fight against the subjugation of mankind by the machines.
The plot involves Neo (Keanu Reeves), a mild-mannered software author by day, a feared
hacker by night. He's recruited by a cell of cyber-rebels, led by the profound Morpheus
(Laurence Fishburne) and the leather-clad warrior Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss. I learned that
their names are examples of religious allegories. Also, I discovered what each character
symbolized. “Morpheus” was used to symbolize God or the father. In one part of the movie,
Tank said, "Morpheus, you were more than a leader to us. You were a father." I found that
Morpheus is also a name for the god of dreams. The name “Neo” was used to symbolize
Jesus, the son. This makes sense because Morpheus is like a father for Neo. And the name
“Trinity” carries with it a host of Christian connotations. The Trinity, in Christian theology,
represents the unity of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost).
According to a Christian view of salvation, we can receive eternal life through the Trinity. In
the Matrix trilogy, Trinity serves as a uniting force, the one who gives us access to Neo. In
the movie they've made a fundamental discovery about the world: It doesn't exist. It's actually
a form of Virtual Reality, designed to lull us into lives of blind obedience to the "system." Their
ultimate goal was to destroy The Matrix and end the domination of the machines. How do
they go about doing this? They find a man within The Matrix (Thomas A. "Neo" Anderson)
who develops the ability to defeat the Artificial Intelligence within the Matrix and begin the
process of restoring man to his rightful place as the sentient species on the planet.
The Matrix is a very fine high-tech, futuristic, sci-fi action flick. But if we look deeper into this
movie it gives us a glimpse of a visually dazzling cyber adventure, full of kinetic excitement,
but it retreats to formula just when it's getting interesting. It's kind of a letdown when a movie
begins by redefining the nature of reality, and ends with a shoot-out.
