Lesson idea implementation:
To start the lesson, I will play the narrated video I created about different types of animals and the sounds
they make. I will then start a class discussion about what makes animals similar and what makes them
different. Once we have discussed some of the key similarities and differences between animals I will provide
the students with a refresher on how to create a simple PowerPoint. I will then break the students up into
groups of about five and have them create a short PowerPoint where they talk about what makes animals
similar and what makes them different. I will ask that each group had a title slide, a slide with at least two
things that make animals the same, and at least two things that make animals different. I will also have books
for students to use if they need help researching more about what makes animals similar and different. Once
the PowerPoints are created, I will have the students share their PowerPoint’s with their classmates to
conclude the lesson.
This lesson will likely take two or three days to complete due to the age of the children. Learning will be
addressed through the video I created, the discussion that will be held, the research that students can do on
the similarities and differences of animals, and through the sharing of each student’s PowerPoint. The final
product will help students see visually the similarities and differences animals hold. I will extend this lesson
for students who need an extension by asking them to include more than two ways animals are similar and
different. I will also have those students go into detail explaining these similarities and differences. I will
provide writing feedback to my students on the rubric I will grade each group on.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that this lesson has the ability to positively impact learners because of the way each slide organizes
the students thinking into what animals have in common and what they have that makes them unique. To
further extend this lesson, I would have students each pick two animals and have them compare and

contrast what makes them different and what makes them the same. I would then have them create a
narrated movie similar to the one I made where they explain the similarities and differences they found.
