C’mon Over!
On the evenings of November 9 and 10, Etna
Elementary will be hosting the first Parent/
Teacher Conferences of the school year. Each
time, our goal is to meet with 100% of our
parents. This is a great opportunity to meet the
staff and find out about your child’s progress.
This year, we will be asking all parents
who attend Parent/Teacher Conferences to
take a 5-10 minute web survey about Etna
Elementary. To show our appreciation for
taking the time out of your evening to do the
survey, you will be given a $1.00 coupon for
the Book Fair when you leave the computer
lab.
I invite all parents to come to the school on
one of those two nights and be a part of the
conferences and take part in the survey. I look
forward to seeing you then!

Etna Enrichment Express!
We are gearing up to begin our “Brain Bag” program in many students as possible the opportunity to take one
November. We have about 20 Brain Bags filled with home this school year. This is a great way to enhance and
after-school enrichment activities that can be done at home. encourage After-School Enrichment at home.
Each teacher will choose one or two students to be given
the privilege to select a Brain Bag each week. Teachers We are also continuing with Etna Enrichment Express. We
will determine the criteria to decide who will be given currently have about 140 students enrolled in Session 2
this opportunity each week. If your student brings home that will conclude on November 3. We have some great

DICTIONARY DAY
Mr. Jaques’ and Mrs. Nielsen’s
class recently had a dictionary
day. Each member of the class was
given a vocabulary word from the
novel they were studying. Students
were to wear a costume that some-
how described or symbolized their
word. On Dictionary Day, students
not only wore their costumes, they
taught their words to the class and
also to at least four other students
or teachers during recess. The students came away with a greater
understanding of the words than if they had just been given a list of
words to study. The words were tricky, and required a lot of thought
to come up with a fitting costume, but they did a great job thinking
outside the box.
Red Ribbon Week
PTO News
**Many thanks to all the students, parents, and volunteers who supported the potato fundraiser. It was a great
success, with as many as 50 students selling enough potatoes to qualify for a yummy potato bar lunch! Well
done, everyone!
**Red Ribbon week was held the last week of October and it was a tremendous experience for all concerned.
Sheriffs Deputy and LCSD2 School Resource Officer, James Hunting; Afton Police Chief, Fred Putnam; and
Alpine Police Chief, James Phillips kicked the week off in an assembly about drug awareness and saying NO
to drugs. All students pledged to stay away from drugs by putting their handprints on banners which were
displayed around the school for the week. There were prizes galore for students wearing their red ribbons
everyday and the week culminated with students wearing their t-shirts backwards, symbolic for “Turning Your
Back on Drugs”. Thanks so much to Tina White and her group of volunteers for all their hard work.
**Many thanks to those who support the PTO and attend our meetings – in reality you are supporting and
teaching your children as you volunteer time and share your talents. Our next PTO meeting will be on Tuesday
November 16 at 2 p.m. All are welcome – See you there!

As you can see, Etna 6th graders had a great time on their annual
field trip to Yellowstone National Park.
