High Rise Building Design Assignment

The document provides details for a design and numerical modeling exercise for a 36-story high-rise reinforced concrete office building in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It specifies member sizes, material properties, and loading conditions including dead loads from slabs, beams, partitions, finishes, and the column, as well as imposed live and roof loads. It asks to calculate axial forces in Column C1 and the shear core at various levels due to gravity loads, and to design moments for the specified beam and connected columns due to gravity loads.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of this exercise is to design forces and displacements for some specified members of a high rise
reinforced concrete office building subjected to vertical as well as lateral loads. The building is situated in
Colombo Seafront.
Design Information
Registration Number – PG/E/ST/2019/21
Number of storeys N,
N = 35 + Last digit of the registration number
= 35 + 1
= 36
Specified members,
 Frame 1, Column C1 and Beam B1 (for odd registration numbers)
Member sizes
C1 C2 C3 B1 B2 Shear Walls Floor Slabs
900 mm 750 mm 650 mm 750 mm 650 mm 350 mm (t) 900 mm (t)
x 900 mm x 750 mm x 650 mm x 500 mm x 500 mm
(Note: In actual practice the member sections will vary with height)
Material properties
 E = 20 GPa
 s = 24 KN/m3
Loading
Dead Load (In addition to self-weight)
 Floor Partitions = 1.5 KN/m2
 Finishes = 1.5 KN/m3
Live Load
 All Floors = 3 KN/m2
 Roof = 1.5 KN.m2
 Wind Pressure (along Y) = 2 KN/m2 – for approximate analysis
Part 1 - Design Exercise Using Eurocode
Question 01.
Design axial force for the specified column, and the shear core, at levels N -1, N – 2, N -5, and
N – 29 due to gravity loads.

Dead Load
Self-weight of slab portion (Gk1) = 0.15 m x 8 m x 7 m x 24 KN/m3 = 201.6 KN
Self-weight of beams (Gk2) = (7+8) m x (0.75-0.15) m x 0.5 m x 24 KN/m3 = 108 KN

Weight from partitions (Gk3) = 1.5 KN/m2 x 8 m x 7 m = 84 KN

Weight from floor finishes (Gk4) = 1.5 KN/m2 x 8 m x 7 m = 84 KN
Self-weight of the column (Gk5) = 0.9 m x 0.9 m x 3.25 m x 24 KN/m3 = 63.18 KN
Therefore total dead load on Nth level = Gk1 + Gk2 + Gk3 + Gk4 + Gk5 = 540.78 KN
Imposed load
Live load = 7 m x 8 m x 3 KN/m2 = 168 KN
Roof load = 7 m x 8 m x 1.5 KN/m2 = 84 KN

Load combinations
Ultimate Limit State = 1.35 x Dead + 1.5 x Imposed
Serviceability limit state = 1 x Dead + 1 x Imposed
