Bimetallic Thermometer Overview and Uses

A bimetallic thermometer uses two metals with different coefficients of expansion joined together; when heated, they expand at different rates, causing the strip to bend and indicate temperature on a pointer. It consists of a bimetallic strip that bends up or down based on increasing or decreasing temperature, with a pointer showing the reading. Common types are spiral, cantilever, and helix strips, and it is simple and inexpensive but less sensitive and accurate at low temperatures.

Bimetallic Thermometer

Bimetallic thermometer consists of two different metals having different thermal coefficient of expansion. The two
metal strips are joined together by brazing, welding or riveting. Bimetallic thermometers are mechanical themometers.
Difference in thermal expansion rates is used to produce deflections which is proportional to temperature changes.

Working Principle

The bimettalic strip bends upwards or downwards depending on the increase or decrease of the temperature. If the
temperature icreases, the bimetal will bend upwards, and if the temperature decreases, the bimetal will bend
downwards, shown in the figure below. In the loose end of the bimetal strip attouched is a pointer which will indicate
the temperature reading.

Types or shapes of bimetallic strip:

Helix
1. Spiral Strip Bimetallic Thermometer
2. Cantilever/Flat Strip Bimetallic Thermometer
3. Helix Bimetallic Thermometer

Advantages

• Simple, robust and inexpensive

• Works best at high temperatures Spiral

• No need of power source

Disadvantages

• When regularly used, the bimetal may permanently deform.

• Sensitivity and accuracy are less at low temperatures.

• Limited to applications where manual reading is acceptable.

Applications

• Bimetallic strip is used in control devices.

• Spiral strip is used in air conditioning thermostats.

Cantilever
• Helix strip is used for process application such as refineries, oil burners etc.
