1
MANAGEMENT IS A SUBSET OF
ADMINISTRATION, DEBATE!
In organizational analysis, Management is a subset of Administration
and would speak in favour of it.
Management:
Management in all business areas and organizational activities are the
acts of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and
objectives. Management comprises of planning, organizing,
staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group
of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of
accomplishing a goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and
manipulation of humanresources, financial resources,
technological resources, and natural resources.
Because organizations can be viewed as systems, management can also
be defined as human action, including design, to facilitate the
production of useful outcomes from a system. This view opens the
opportunity to 'manage' oneself, a pre-requisite to attempting to
manage others.
2
Administration:
Administration consists of the performance or management of
business operations and thus the making or implementing of major
decisions. Administration can be defined as the universal process of
organizing people and resources efficiently so as to direct activities
toward common goals and objectives.
In Organizational analyses, management is viewed
as a subset of administration, specifically associated with the
technical and mundane elements within an organization's operation. It
stands distinct from executive or strategic work.
In other organizational analyses, administration can refer to
the bureaucratic or operational performance of mundane office tasks,
usually internally oriented and reactive rather than proactive.
3
Management VS administration:
Management and administration may seem the same, but there are
differences between the two which are as follows:
Administration has to do with the setting up of objectives and
crucial policies of every organization.
Management, however, is the act or function of putting into
practice the policies and plans decided upon by the
administration.
Administration is a determinative function,
Management is an executive function.
Administration is the top level whereas
Management is a middle level activity.
Administrators are usually found in government, military, religious
and educational organizations.
Management is used by business enterprises. The decisions of
management are shaped by the values, opinions and beliefs of
the managers.
Administration is concerned with planning and organizing of
functions which are the key factors.
Management involves motivating and controlling functions.
4
Administration deals with administrative qualities, rather than
technical qualities.
Management deals with technical abilities and human relation
management abilities are crucial.
Administration usually handles the business aspects, such as finance . It
may be defined as a system of efficiently organizing Administration is
above management, and exercises control over the finance and
licensing of an organization.
5
Conclusion:
I would conclude by saying that Management is viewed as a subset of
administration, specifically associated with the technical and mundane
elements within an organization's operation. It stands distinct from
executive or strategic work.
Management is closer to the employees. Administration is over the
management and more over the money of the organization and
licensing of an organization.
Management manages employees. Administration manages the outside
contacts and the facility as a whole. As a manger, you can also be
administrator but as an administrator, you may not be a manager.
Administration is the paper work. Management is how you deal with
the people or people management.
