INSTALLATION GUIDE
Field application of ТIAL-М80 heat-shrinkable sleeve
to welded joints of pipes
TIAL-M80 coating system
Heat shrinkable tape/sleeve TIAL-M80 consists of two layers: a layer of radiation cross-linked polyethylene backing and a layer of
hot-melt adhesive. Tape is supplied in rolls or in precut sleeves for one welded joint. The Tape is supplied with Closure Patch
ТIAL-ZP (designed for fixing sleeves on a joint and covering a fixing overlap) and epoxy Primer.
Primer consists of two components: component А (epoxy compound) and component В (hardener), which are mixed right
before application to the pipe. Primer components are supplied in containers: 1 container of component A and 1 container of
component B for 1 welded joint.
1. Accessories for coating application
Installation of ТIAL-М80 sleeve to welded joint shall be performed by trained workers (1 person for pipes up to Ø 12 inch and 2
persons for pipes more than Ø 12 inch).

NB! Before application of TIAL-M80 sleeve to the joint it is important to prepare the pipe surface thoroughly according
to this instruction!
2. Preparation of surface for coating application
2.1 Using grinding machine thoroughly clean steel surface of the pipe from burrs, sharp edges.
0
2.2 Using propane torch preheat steel surface to a temperature 40±10 С. Using contact digital
thermometer test temperature in 3 places on the surface.
2.3 Using sandblasting unit treat steel surface of the pipe to minimum Sa 2,5 degree as per ISO 8501-1.
After cleaning the pipe should be of light grey color, evenly rough, free of rust and mill scale.
Preparation of mill-applied coating under the sleeve: cut edges of mill-applied polyethylene coating of the
О
pipe 30 angle-wise to the pipe axis. Using sandblasting unit (sandpaper) apply roughness to
polyethylene coating 100 mm from the edge and both sides of the joint.
After sandblast cleaning of a joint and application of roughing of polyethylene edges degrease
steel and polyethylene surface with acetone in case of oil stains.
3. Primer preparation.
3.1 In case of prior cool storage before mixing two components of primer it is necessary to keep containers with primer
(component А and B) at the temperature above 10˚C during 2 hours for better mixing and obtaining proper quality.
3.2 Right before application of primer to the prepared surface of the joint component B from tube shall be poured in container with
component А and thoroughly mixed with a stick to get homogeneous mass.
Time from start of mixing till applying to the joint must not exceed 20 minutes!
4. Preheating of insulated surface before primer application.
Before primer application again preheat the prepared surface (steel and polyethylene) to 100 - 110С
using a propane torch.
Heated surface should be free of soot. It is achieved with right regulation of propane torch flame.
If soot appears it is necessary to remove it with cleaning cloth and to heat again.
5. Primer application.
Using foam rollers apply the prepared primer (see paragraph 3) evenly to the steel surface of the joint (do
not apply primer to polyethylene).
For correct application drying of primer by propane torch is forbidden !!!
6. TIAL-M80 heat-shrinkable sleeve installation
6.1 Cut the two corners at one sleeve end (50mm along the width x 25mm along the length). If tape is supplied
in rolls, cut the required length before application depending on the diameter of insulated pipe, in accordance
with Table of sleeve length – Enclosure. Remove anti-adhesive tape from the adhesive layer of the sleeve.

6.2 The sleeve shall be wrapped around the pipe with polyethylene layer up and adhesive layer down to
the pipe. Sleeve overlapping shall be in 10 or 14 o’clock positions. Ensure that one sleeve end
overlaps the other end by min. 110 mm (for pipe size ≤20ʼʼ or 160 mm (for pipe size ≥22ʼʼ).
Heat the adhesive side of sleeve end with cut corners, avoiding shrinkage of polyethylene. Press the
tape to pipe surface.
The sleeve shall overlap mill coating min. 60 mm on both sides of the welded joint.
Wrap the sleeve around the joint. Sleeve end with uncut corners shall overlap sleeve end with cut corners. Heat the adhesive
side of other sleeve edge and press to the edge with cut corners.
Roll the overlap of sleeve ends with silicone roller and smooth it with heat resistant gloves to remove air from the overlap area.
Heat adhesive layer of Closure Patch. Place Closure Patch to the sleeve overlap with adhesive layer down
and polyethylene layer up. It is necessary for prevention of sleeve overlap “opening” during installation and
shrinkage of sleeve. Heat the Patch with yellow flame of the torch. Roll it with a silicone roller and smooth
with heat resistant gloves to remove possible air and to smooth all the material.
6.3 Sleeve shrinkage shall be started right after application of Closure Patch. Shrink the sleeve using a propane torch. Heat
the sleeve uniformly from bottom upwards.
Direction of shrinkage:: start heating from one side to the other side (for pipe diameters up to 6”), from center to sides (for pipe
diameters from 8ʼʼ), moving the torch circumferentially all around the pipe. Avoid the sleeve overheating.
In case there are air enclosures and corrugations they shall be removed and smoothed from center to edges
with a silicone roller till complete smoothing of sleeve surface.
7. Sleeve installation quality
7.1 Heat shrinkable sleeve shall be in tight contact with insulated surface of steel and mill-applied
coating of the pipe. Sleeve surface shall be smooth, without corrugations, crimps, burns-through.
7.2 Outline of pipe welded joint and overlap of the sleeve shall be evident through insulation.
7.3 Adhesive shall be slightly oozed out from under both sleeve edges (in places of adjunction to
mill-applied coating) along the circumference of the pipe.
7.4 Sleeve shall overlap mill coating at least 60 mm on both edges.
7.5 Coating achieves declared characteristics after 24 hours from insulation.
