Simplifying Complex Numbers Guide

Complex numbers are numbers with real and imaginary components written in the form a ± bi, where i = √−1. The document provides an introduction to complex numbers and their notation. It also presents examples of simplifying complex number expressions by raising i to different powers and dividing complex numbers, asking the reader to try a couple examples before starting practice problems.

Complex Numbers

Complex numbers are numbers with real and imaginary components; they are written in the following format:

𝑎 ± 𝑏𝑖, where 𝑖 = √−1

When solving complex number problems, you will need to use the rational and radical concepts from the prior
section. However, you also need to be aware of the different iterations of i. Since these problems don’t show up too
much in this problem set, lets try a couple before you start your practice set:

𝑖 = √−1 𝑖2 = 𝑖3 = 𝑖4 = 𝑖5 =

𝑖 47 = 𝑖 84 = 𝑖 26 =

Simplify the following:

6 1 3+2𝑖
a) b) c)
3𝑖 2+𝑖 4+3𝑖
