ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
An organization’s culture consists of the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that
employees share and use daily in their work. The culture determines how employees describe
where they work, how they understand the business, and how they see themselves as part of
the organization. Culture is also a driver of decisions, actions, and ultimately the overall
performance of the organization. The culture could either be strong or weak. Strong culture is
where unity prevails, and weak culture is where majority doesnt share the indicators i.e; dress
court, workstyle etc and the identity is diluted.
There are seven primary characterisitics that seem to capture the essence of an organizations’s
culture
1. Innovation and risk taking
2. Attention to detail
3. Outcome orientation
4. People orientation
5. Team orientation
6. Aggressiveness
7. Stability
SAMSUNG
Samsung is one of the leading multinational coropration reflecting the culture of its home
country south [Link] any successful bussiness orgazniation, its important to understand and
learn the culture of its employees. Koreans have their own laguage, dressing, culture as
compared with their neighboring countries. Koreans prefer to do bussiness with people they
trust and know. Sasmung has a strong and powerful impact on south korea’s economic
develpoment and its found that its affiliates produce around 5th of south korea’s total exports.
The success of samsung is highly dependant upon its employees and it is said that a comapny
only prospers when its workers are intrested in the success of the company. But like every
other company samsung has its own secret corporate culture. Samsung has three major
missions;
[Link] contribute to the economic development of the nation,
2) to act based on considerations of economic expediency;
3) to respect the human resources.
All the three missions were based when back in 20th sencture south korea wasnt well developed
and had not enough labour
Samsung’s corporate culture centers around the integration and effieciency because of its
capable workforce. Samsung has always hired the most competative and talented employees
for the goal of having most experienced employees and to reduce costs.
Moreover, it is found that samsung has a clear exceution of work. You will better understand
with the example:
Samsung built it first plant to produce semiconductors in 6 months however the standard
estimated period was 2 years.
Another important component of samsung’s corporate culture is loyalty and fairness amoung
employees. Samsung effectively implemented training programs about moral standards for new
also, old workers. Moreover, Samsung built up a unique framework to prevent any dishonest
activities and conduct of staff: negligents will be given a punishment.
Another feature of samsung’s culture is the loyalty and devotion of its workers. They are ready
to sacrifice their personal gains for the betterment of the company. Moreover, Samsung's
representatives are greatly trained to play out a few errands, even if they are troublesome for
them. Wokers of Samsung work under colossal pressure.
Nevertheless, samsung’s corporate structure has aslo found to be seniority oreinted means the
lower level employees can’t directly communicate their innovative ideas to thier superiors. This
culture defintely has perks like easy decision making and higher level of employee’s loyalty. But
if we keep in mind the fact of advancement and innovations and creativty in electrical industry,
the negative aspects of this culture outweigh its positive aspects.
Hence, the company decided to reform its culture and cut its heirarchial level from seven levels
to four where all the employees will be allowed to communicate with each other. Flexible
working hours, no dress code requirements for weekend work and less pressure on employees
to attend after-work drinking sessions. It also inculded more of online meetings rather than in
person so that it will also reduce unnecessary overtime and weekend work and push employees
to spend time with their families.
APPLE
Apple is highly renowned when it comes to mainiting then job secrecy and developing pressure.
In Job’s days fear and very high level of pressure were considered regular things. While these
things have a greater effect on productivity, but they are aslo tend to hurt the employee’s
morale. Steves focus was mainly on its cosumers and not on his workers or how to keep them
happy. So, it was a sleepless culture which needed full time energy.
But since Tim Cook took over apple, things have changed alot. The focus of apple shifted
towards having a balance between work pressure and fun because pressure can’t completely
be eliminated from a highly competative enviornment. However, the two things from steve’s
time are the same; innovation and [Link] differentiation along with quality has been
the focus of apple since the start. These two things are inseprable from its culture and will
remain in the future. Creative design of Apple Campus, informal dress codes and creatively
designed working space can be mentioned to illustrate this point.
Abiltiy to work under pressure and strain is an absoluture necessity for apple’s workers at all
levels. Most of the products and tasks have strict deadlines and working till late hours is a norm
of this organization. CEO Tim himself works late and sets an example for his workers. He is also
known for sending the emails at 4am. Furthermore, Sunday is said to be a worknight for most
of the directors and managers at apple, as the there is excutive metting the next day.
Secrecy is also a critical componenet of apple’s culture. It is found that apple engineers even
the high level engineers have no idea what the new product looks like untill its launched. The
people who work on the software of the product have no idea about the hardware, and who
work on hardware have zero knowlegde about the software.
Morever, apple’s heirarchial culture has a policy of hiring only top-notch workers who are the
best of the best. Steve jobs was known to terminate workers who did not live up to his
expecttions and requirements. This custom also continues under Tim. Such a culture keeps up
and fortifes a corporate culture that promotes, advances and acknwoldges excellence among
top notch employees.
Apples’ organizational structure is also known for its moderate agressiveness. Steve Jobs was
known for randomly challanging his employees with complexed tasks to check if they have the
adequate skills that they need to work at apple. However, this culture has now changed to a
more socialable than an agressive one. Apple's corporate culture displays a moderate level of
aggressiveness that presents difficulties that mean to upgrade worker’s output.
CONCLUSION:
Conlcuding the aobve facts we came to know that apple and samsung both have thier own
different cultures. Where samsung has its corporate culture built on severity of its workers,
innovation, loyalty and trust among its employees, on the other hand apple is seemed to have a
culture which is more of aggressiveness, secrecy, highly innovative and full of pressure .
