POWELL MASTER’S PORTFOLIO 1
Technology Statement
Standard: A teacher uses technology effectively, creatively and wisely.
Technology has really come to the forefront of education in the last few years. It
allows teachers and students to have information with the push of a button, increases
parent teacher communication and helps students to engage in their learning through the
use of many technological resources. With all of the positives to technology it isn’t
surprising that teachers are implementing it into he classroom whenever they can. I think
technology can play a huge role in the classroom and can benefit students greatly.
In ED 230, I created this website [Link] which not
only demonstrates my personal ability to create and use technology, but also shows the
valuable information that I learned throughout the educational technology course. One of
the topics shown in my website is resources for Internet safety. Keeping students safe
while using the Internet should be a high priority for teachers. In an article written by
Linda Joseph (2007), she states, “Keeping kids safe must be an ongoing effort through
awareness, education, and supervision”. Before using technology, we need to talk to our
students about safety. On my website I list several links to websites that promote Internet
safety for youth.
Making my website in ED 230 has made me feel more comfortable with
designing web resources. I think this will be valuable as I start my teaching career.
Increasing parent engagement and parent teacher communication is an important
component of being an effective teacher. In a study done by Christine Olmstead that
looked at using technology to increase parent involvement (2013), it was shown that
websites are technology tools that can be used to keep parents informed. There are

greater student learning outcomes when parents and teachers are on a team. I think
designing a class website similar to the website I produced in ED 230 would be a great
way to increase parent involvement. They would be able to quickly look at what is
happening in class and would be able to access valuable resources. An article published
in Gifted Child Today (2006) suggested that developing a class website is an efficient and
effective way to involve parents and keep them up to date with what is happening in their
child’s school life.
Technology provides teachers with a great opportunity to increase student
engagement as well as increase parent involvement. It also allows for a streamline
approach for keeping student data or lesson plans organized. During student teaching I
did all of my lesson plans through an online program, which allowed me to access my
plans from any computer or device, link standards and create units. As a teacher in a
technology driven world I plan on using technology frequently in my classroom as a way
to promote student learning and increase parent involvement.
