This lesson plan introduces 5th grade students to important places in American history. Students will be assigned to research one of five locations: the Chisholm Trail, Pittsburgh, PA, Kitty Hawk, NC, Pearl Harbor, HI, Montgomery, AL, or Chicago, IL. Using PowerPoint or Prezi, students will create a presentation on their assigned location to teach classmates. The teacher will provide example presentations and guidance to help students develop their projects, which will be graded based on a rubric. The goal is for student-led presentations to spark interest and engagement in learning about the historical significance of important places in the United States.

The links I Provided:
• Each link is video that has historical significance tied to the location the students will be researching,
this is an audio and visual component that allows multiple means of representation.
BrainPop:
• BrainPop allows students another avenue for research and representation of facts.
PowerPoint & Prezi
• Both of these online programs will allow the students multiple means of representation.
• Both allow students to work on this project outside of school.
Lesson idea implementation: This assignment will be given throughout the year depending on what place
each group picks. This addresses the standard of knowing historically relevant places while connecting it with
when is United States’ history it happened. In the beginning of the year and then again, a week before each
presentation will be given, students will be told what they are to cover, run any ideas past the teacher, and
make sure their facts are correct. Students will be graded over presentation, and overview of the location.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
In the beginning of the year the teacher will break students off into five separate groups which then students
will decide what location they want. Once locations are picked students will be given a checklist with when
they will be presenting. The teacher will then show an example of what the presentation CAN look like with a
slideshow that is done on Office 365 going over whatever state this is taught in. A week before the students
are to present their presentations the teacher will get with each group to see how things have come along,
offering any guidance or support if needed.
The presentation itself will be graded off a rubric that covers neatness, content, and the presentation itself.
Students won’t be experts but should have information that isn’t common amongst a fifth-grade classroom.
Students will be given their rubrics with comments back in a conference with the teacher, this being after the
lesson is taught by the teacher. These are to be introductions to the lesson and not so much a final “this is
what I learned” but more of “this is what we are going to learn about”.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson is designed to get the students excited about the topic they are to cover. I hope that because they
will be in charge of the information that is going to be expressed, then they will find lesson as a whole more
exciting and leading them to be more engaged. Same with the rest of the class, if their peers are presenting
then they will be more focused on what they are saying then if the teacher just went up and gave the same
information. Because this is an opener to a lesson then it gives me the opportunity to start conversations with
those who have researched leading to a diverse dialog in the class. If I wanted this to be a summative activity,
then I would encourage my students to use a movie maker program to make a short video that could be used
to sum up an activity.
