I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. define marcotting;
b. marcot their own ornamental plant; and
c. appreciate the value of following procedures closely.

B. Motivation

What can you see am I holding?

“An envelope, Sir.”
Inside the envelope is a jigsaw puzzle. I will
group you into six (6). Each group must
assemble the puzzle then give the name of that
plant. You will be given five (5) minutes to
solve the puzzle. The first group to solve the
puzzle will be the winner.
“Are you ready class?”
“Yes Sir.”

C. Lesson Proper

“Class, what do we have in front?”

“A Santan plant Sir.”

“If I’m going to cut the stem and plant, what
type of propagation will be used?”
“You will be using Asexual Propagation Sir. “
“Very good! What is Asexual Propagation?
Anyone?”
Yes, Jomarie?
 “Asexual propagation is a type of plant
propagation in which the parts of the plant are
used rather than the seed.”
“That’s a clever idea. Plants can be grown
using its parts like the stems for rose, branch
for kalamansi, roots for Gabi, and leaves for
Kataka taka plant and bulbs for onions. This
method of propagation is called Asexual
Propagation.”

“Today, we are going to discuss one kind of

asexual propagation, we call it
MARCOTTING. Who among you can define
MARCOTTING?"
“Alphiea?”
“Marcotting is a method of plant propagation
in which a portion of an aerial stem grows
roots while still attached to the parent plant and
then detaches an independent plant.”
“Very good. Marcotting is more complicated
than cuttings, but has the advantage that the
propagated portion can continue to receive
water and nutrients from the parent plant while
it is forming roots.”
“There are important steps to follow in
marcotting. These procedures can be seen from
the chart. Can you read the first one,
Ricky?
“Steps in Marcotting”
1. Prepare the tools needed.
Very good! Before we start the first step make
sure you wear your PPE or Personal Protective
Equipment.
The tools are here on top of the table.
Who wants to come and identify or name these
tools? Yes, John Paul?
The tools are knife, ruler, plastic sheet, coconut
husk, yarn and water.
“How about the next step?”
“Diana?”
2. Select a branch for Marcotting.
“Very good. Here, I chose a santan plant. This
plant has woody stems that’s quite easy to
marcot. Select a branch that is near old growth.
Select a section of the branch 3 inches long
that is clear of leaves or stems. If there are
leaves in nearby stems or branches trim them
off.”
“Were you able to follow?”
”Yes Sir.”
“Very good. What is the next step?”
“Christalie?”
3. Cutting a wound on the branch for
marcotting.
“Very good.(Perform) In cutting a wound for
marcotting, first thing to do is make two
parallel cuts, bottom cut and top cut ½ to 1
inch apart around the stem. Then use the sharp
knife to cut around (ring cut). Afterwards,
make a straight cut between top and bottom to
remove the skin.”
“Did you get it?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Very good. Let’s proceed to the fourth step.
“Diana?”
4. Scrape to remove the cambium layer.
“Very good. What is cambium layer? “
“Jerusalem?”
“Cambium layer is a thin formative layer
between the xylem and phloem of most
vascular plants that give rise to new cells and
responsible for secondary growth.”
Very good. (Perform) After removing the skin,
you can feel the greasy wound which is called
the cambium layer. The cambium layer has a
callus tissue which can heal the wound and
form the skin. Scrape the cambium layer to
prevent a bridge of callus tissue from forming.
Notice the whitish color of the wound after
removing the cambium layer.”
“Do you have any question about this step?”
“None, Sir.”
“Let’s proceed to the fifth step.”
“Yes, Dave?”
5. Wrap the potting medium.
“How do we wrap a potting medium?
“C-jhay?”
“Tie the plastic sheet below the wound. Then
flip over the plastic sheet.”
“Very good. (Perform) Make sure to use a
transparent plastic sheet in order to notice
when roots have already formed. In wrapping a
potting media, tie the plastic sheet below the
wound. Afterwards, flip over the plastic sheet
to put the coconut husk.”
“Did you get it?’
“Yes Sir.”
“Very good. What is the next step?.”
“Aphril Mae?”
6. Prepare a piece of coconut husk.
“Very good. (Perform) Take a small part of a
coconut husk enough to cover the wound.
Then, soak the husk in water to become moist.
Take note excessive water moisture will result
decay and deterioration of the plant tissue.
Make sure to press it to lessen the moisture
content. Then, cover the wound.”
“Any clarification?”
“None, Sir.”
“Very good. Let’s proceed to the seventh step.
“Tricia Mae?”
7. Tie the plastic sheet.
“Very good. (Perform) After we put the
coconut husk, we are now ready to tie the
plastic sheet. Take note, tie the plastic sheet
tightly in order for the roots to develop
orderly.”
“How about the next step?”
“Neil Lester?”
8. Cut the excess plastic sheet.
“Very good. (Perform) After we tie the plastic
sheet, we should cut any excess so that the
water will directly go to the wound.”
“Did you get it?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Very good. Let’s proceed to the last step.”
“Chad?”
9. Make 5-7 small holes on the top of the
plastic sheet.
Why do you think we need to make holes on
the top of the plastic sheet?

In order for the water to enter especially when
watering the plant.
Good answer! Santan has thicker and
woodier stems so it usually takes up 4-6 weeks
to form roots.

“Yes Sir.”
“Very good.”

D. Generalization

What is Marcotting?
“Marcotting is a method of plant propagation
in which a portion of an aerial stem grows
roots while still attached to the parent plant and
then detaches an independent plant.”
Why do think we need to follow closely the
procedures in marcoting?
It is important to follow the procedures in
marcotting so that the new independent plant
will have a higher rate of survival or growing.
 IV. Evaluation
Application. Today, you are going to perform marcotting. Bring out your own
ornamental plant and set of tools to use for the activity. This is an individual task. Therefore, I
am hoping for individual outputs. You will be assessed using the rubric below.

V. Assignment
Take care of your new marcotted plant. Visit them in our garden once in a while
and water them if needed. Make sure your plant survives.
