What is Phonetics?
• Phonetics (from the Greek word phone =
sound/voice) is the study of speech
sounds (voice) as uttered by human
beings.

• It serves as a foundation to study an
accent because it helps us to understand
the sounds of the consonants and the
vowels.
What is Pronunciation?
Pronunciation is the act or manner of
speaking words in a way that is
accepted or generally understood.
What is Accent?
• Accent is a combination of 3 main
components:
– Intonation – speech music
– Liaisons – word connections
– Pronunciation – spoken sounds of vowels,
consonants,, and combinations

that is clearly audible before the next
sound begins.
