4 Construction of Drain
2.4.1 Side drain
The design level sheet contained existing road center line levels and new road details such as
center line finish levels, cross fall (camber) for both sides and right of way (ROW) limits.
Further it included the details of side drains such as side drain base levels and wall levels for
both sides. All of this information was available at 10 m intervals.
After the ground preparation setting out was carried out to set out the drain center line. A
polythene membrane was laid on the ground and the screed concreting was done at 50mm
thickness with the help of timber formwork. The reinforcement net was placed through the
center line and base formwork was prepared for side drain base. The finish levels for the base
were provided using design level sheet and level instrument. Grade C20 concrete was used
for base concreting. Day after base concreting was done formwork for drain wall was placed
which had to be properly vertical and aligned. Then the finish levels were provided and
concreting was done by using grade C20 concrete. In the following day formwork was
removed and curing was done using gunny bags.

Normally plywood is available a standard size of 8'×4' in the Sri Lankan market for
construction. According to the design requirement, it was cut into pieces and used for
formwork.
The sizes of 10, 12mm tor steel were used as reinforcement bars for drainage construction
