Healthful habits that promote the proper functioning of Endocrine system
D. Concepts:
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Endocrine system – is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones,
chemical substances produced in the body that regulate the activity of cells or
organs. These hormones regulate the body's growth, metabolism (the physical
and chemical processes of the body), and sexual development and function.
Glands – is an organ secreting a substance to be used in the body or to be
eliminated from the body.
Two types of glands
Glands with tube/ duct
Glands without tube/ductless
Endocrine glands – regulate bodily functions. They control most of the important
processes within the ody bi sending message to specific organs.
- They are known as master chemist of the body because they
manufacture chemical substance called hormones.
Parts of the Endocrine System
1. Pituitary gland
– Most important endocrine gland, and it is called “the master gland” it controls
the functioning of all the other endocrine glands. It controls the growth of bones, regulate
hormones secretion of the thyroid glands, adrenal, parathyroid glands ovaries and
testes, controls blood pressure, watches absorption in kidneys and keeps smooth
muscle function.
2. Thyroid gland
– It secretes hormones which stimulate the oxygen consumption of the body
tissues and are necessary for normal growth.
3. Adrenal gland
– located at the top of the kidney. The inner of each gland, medulla manufacture
adrenaline which enables the body to act on emergencies.
Cortisone – regulates the balance of salt and water in the body, it also helps with
the release of extra sugar in blood.
4. Pancreas
– It has both digestive and endocrine functions. It produces enzymes that digest
food, it regulates the amount of glucose or blood sugar in the blood.
Insulin – decreases the amount of blood sugar
Adrenaline – increase the amount of blood sugar
5. Ovaries and testes
– The testes produce testosterone while ovaries produces estrogen and
progesterone. They regulate the reproductive process and the development of sex
agents and sex characteristic.
