Ecotourism Impact on Shivapuri Land Use
Ecotourism Impact on Shivapuri Land Use
Ecotourism contributes to sustainability by providing a source of income for locals and boosting the growth of businesses like eco-lodges and ecotour operators. Conversely, it may lead to unsustainability by altering natural habitats and causing environmental stress that can offset the balance of local ecosystems. Monitoring and quantifying these dynamics is crucial to ensure appropriate management policies are applied .
Monitoring land use and land cover dynamics is essential to manage environmental services and ecotourism effectively. It allows for the assessment of spatial and temporal changes, which aids in the prediction of future changes and formulation of management policies. This is particularly important in ecotourism-heavy regions like Shivapuri watershed, where visitor activities greatly influence the ecological balance .
The study used Landsat ETM+ satellite images from November 1999 and OLI 2016, downloaded from the USGS website. The images were clipped, classified using a supervised maximum likelihood algorithm, and thematic maps were produced. The classification's accuracy was validated using 216 and 233 training samples collected from field observations for 1999 and 2016 maps, respectively .
The tourism industry is a major driver of land use and landscape changes, especially in coastal and mountain areas. It can modify habitats, disturb wildlife behaviors such as feeding and breeding, and sometimes spread diseases. Even well-intentioned ecotourism can lead to unsustainability by creating stressful environments. However, it serves as a significant income source for local populations .
Integrated ecotourism development programs can be more effective by combining conservation efforts with community engagement and education, ensuring that economic benefits are shared locally. These programs focus on minimizing ecological footprints while maximizing community participation and awareness. They can provide a holistic approach that balances ecological preservation with socio-economic benefits, creating long-term sustainability that other land use programs may not achieve .
The number of tourists visiting the Shivapuri watershed increased significantly from 10,850 visitors in 1994/1995 to 209,717 in 2016/2017. This increase suggests a growing popularity and demand for ecotourism in the region, indicating the success of ecotourism as a burgeoning industry, though it also highlights the need for careful management to mitigate potential environmental impacts .
Socio-economic factors influencing perceptions of ecotourism include local economic benefits, employment opportunities, cultural impacts, and environmental education. If ecotourism provides substantial economic benefits and employment, local populations may perceive it positively. However, negative impacts on culture or insufficient education on its environmental benefits might lead to adverse perceptions .
Ecotourism in the Shivapuri watershed can have both direct and indirect effects on biodiversity and ecosystems. Directly, activities like hiking and wildlife viewing can disturb habitats and wildlife. Indirectly, increased human presence and infrastructure development can lead to habitat fragmentation and degradation. These impacts stress ecosystems and can unbalance biodiversity, leading to unforeseen ecological consequences .
The land cover in the Shivapuri watershed primarily consisted of forest cover, which decreased from 2514 ha in 1999 to 2404 ha in 2016. Agriculture land decreased by 110 ha, degraded forest increased by 198 ha, and settlements increased by 18 ha. Significant ecotourism activities affecting these changes include jungle driving, trekking, hiking, bicycling, videography, wildlife viewing, and bird watching. The effects were notably towards the northeast part of the watershed .
Ecotourism is growing globally at a rate three times faster than the tourism industry as a whole. This rapid growth could be due to the development of specialized services such as eco-lodges, ecotour operators, and transport services that cater specifically to eco-conscious travelers, as well as the general increase in awareness and demand for sustainable travel experiences .
