Fall protection system
Purpose
This chapter describes minimum fall protection requirements for Saudi Aramco (SA) and
contractor personnel working at SA facilities and project sites..
General requirement
Each person who could fall more than 1.8 m (6 ft) shall be protected from falling by a fall
protection system..
Fall protection systems include fixed fall protection systems include guardrail systems,
warning lines and Personal fall arrest systems shall include a full-body harness
Identification and fitting of correct fall protection equipment to the task. Selection of
appropriate anchor points (i.e., anchorage).
Ensure that fall protection equipment is available and in good working condition before
commencing work.
Storage, inspection and maintenance of fall protection equipment
Fall protection equipment shall not be used for any purpose other than its intended use
A full-body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline (see Figure
5.3) shall be continuously worn by personnel working at heights when exposed to a fall
hazard of 1.8 m (6ft) or greater.
Fall protection equipment shall be used for unprotected elevated areas, yellow-tagged
scaffolds area.
Safety belts (i.e., body belts) shall not be used as part of a personal fall arrest system.
Personal fall arrest systems shall comply with ANSI Z359.1
Fall arrest equipment shall limit the maximum arresting force on the user’s body to 818 kg
(1,800 lb).
Full-body harnesses shall safely support 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) dead weight (i.e., minimum
breaking strength).
Be attached to an anchor point that is capable of supporting at least 2,268 kg (5,000 lb)
dead weight.
Be made from wire rope with a minimum diameter of 10 mm (3/8 inch) (Vertical or
horizontal life line )
