Kentledge Load Test Method Statement

This document outlines procedures for conducting maintained load tests on trial test piles and working test piles to verify their load bearing capacities. It describes preparing the pile head, setting up the kentledge load system, installing dial gauges to monitor settlement, applying load using a hydraulic jack, recording data, and acceptance criteria for load-settlement behavior. Load will be applied in stages to working load, 2x working load, and 3x working load for trial piles or 1x and 2x working load for working piles over 24-hour periods.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT

FOR
KENTLEDGE MAINTAINED LOAD TEST

PROCEDURES FOR TRIAL TEST PILE

1. The selected pile shall be tested to the specified load by increasing the load in stages.
2. 2 numbers of trial test pile shall be driven before proceed with actual quantities of
working pile.
3. Total numbers of piles in this contract are approximately 1600 points.
4. Consultant shall choose the 2 location points of trial test pile.
5. Maintained load test shall be carried to 3 times the working load as specified in the
construction drawing ( 3 X 40 tons of working load = 120 tons ).
6. The pile will be loaded in three cycles. First cycles the pile will be loaded to 1.0 times
working load and the second cycles the pile will be loaded to 2.0 times and third
cycles loaded to 3.0 times.
7. Load shall be applied in increments of 25 % of working load.
8. For each load increments, the load shall be maintained for 1 hour or until equilibrium
is reached, whichever is greater.
9. Settlement readings shall be taken from 4 dial gauges. Additional level readings shall
be taken from 2 scales as benchmarks by dumping level.
10. Dial gauges and level readings shall be recorded every 15 minutes.
11. After the load increments reached 1.0 times working load it shall be maintained 24
hours.
12. Dial gauges and level readings will be recorded hourly during this period.
13. The pile will then be unloaded in similar decrements and the residual settlement
noted.
14. After 6 hour, the pile shall then be reloaded in same manner to 2.0 times working load
which will also be held for 24 hours maintained. – Ditto – 3.0 times working load.
15. The pile will then be unloaded in similar decrements and the residual settlement
noted.

1
PROCEDURES FOR WORKING TEST PILE

1 The selected pile shall be tested to the specified load by increasing the load in stages.
2 Three numbers ( Provisional ) of maintained load test shall be carried out on the
working pile.
3 Consultant shall choose the Pile points of working test pile.
4 The load test shall be 2 times the working load as specified in the contract ( 2 X 40
tons of working load = 80 tons ).
5 The pile will be loaded in two cycles as per specified in the contract. First cycles the
pile will be loaded to 1.0 times working load and the second cycles the pile will be
loaded to 2.0 times.
6 Load shall be applied in increments of 25 % of working load.
7 For each load increments, the load shall be maintained for 1 hour or until equilibrium
is reached, whichever is greater.
8 Settlement readings shall be taken from 4 dial gauges. Additional level readings shall
be taken from 2 scales as benchmarks by dumping level.
9 Dial gauges and level readings shall be recorded every 15 minutes.
10 After the load increments reached 1.0 time working load it shall be maintained 24
hours.
11 Dial gauges and level readings will be recorded hourly during this period.
12 The pile will then be unloaded in similar decrements and the residual settlement
noted.
13 After 6 hour, the pile shall then be reloaded in same manner to 2.0 times working load
which will also be held for 24 hours maintained.
14 The pile will then be unloaded in similar decrements and the residual settlement
noted.

2
PILE HEAD PREPARATION

1 The pile shall be cut off [Link] 800 mm. from the ground level by using diamond
cutter.
2 The pile head shall be leveled and trimmed up with a thin layer of high strength
epoxy.
3 Allowed for epoxy grout curing in accordance to grout manufacturer’s
recommendation ( min 1 hour ).
4 A thick steel plate shall then be placed on top of pile head to get even distribution of
vertical load onto pile.

KENTLEDGE

1 Kentledge such as concrete blocks and steel beam shall be used as dead weight for
load test.
2 It is imperative that the footing to support beam and concrete blocks shall be firmed
and strong.
3 Kentledge shall be supported on cribwork around the pile head.
4 A sketch showing the arrangement of kentledge, secondary beam, jack, jack platform,
dial gauges, steel plate, scales and dumping level.
5 Design calculation for the kentledge setup endorsed by Professional Engineer shall be
submitted before commencement of works.

DAIL GAUGES

1 4 dial gauges shall be screwed rigidly to the mild steel frame. The frame then
mounted to the tested pile.
2 2 numbers of steel frames such as goal post shall be driven at least 900 mm in ground
to act as permanent stopper when received the dial gauges pin.
3 The legs of steel frame shall be driven at minimum 700 mm from the tested pile.
4 Calibration report of all the dial gauges shall be submitted.

3
EQUIPMENT TO APPLY LOAD

First load can only be applied after after minimum 12 hours from the complete installation of
the test pile.

1. The hydraulic jack shall be used to apply load at tested pile.

2. The hydraulic jack shall be placed between the steel plate and a main jacking beam.
3. The main jacking beam shall then distribute the total ram force to the beam and
concrete block.
4. The technical data and ram area of hydraulic jack shall be submitted.
5. Calibration report of pressure gauge shall be submitted.

RECORD AND RESULTS

1. Record shall be kept properly during testing period.

2. Original record with signature of Contractor and Consultant shall be submitted
within 48 hours.
3. Two set of settlement curves shall be provided.
1. Load Vs Settlement
2. Time Vs Settlement
4. Load Vs Time Chart

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Base on specification in this contract the acceptance criteria are as follow :

A) Working Test Pile

A working pile will be considered as having failed to satisfy if :

1) The settlement is more than 0.05 mm per ton of the applied test load or if the residual
settlement after removing the test load exceeds 6 mm.
2) Total settlement under Working Loads exceeds 12.50 mm
3) Total settlement under 2 x Working Load exceeds 25.00 mm

4
B) Ultimate Trial Test Pile

Pile considered to have reached ultimate failure if :

1) Pile continues to settle without an increase in test load.
2) Any portion of the pile found to have cracked, crumbled, distorted and deflected from
its original shape or alignment.
3) Total settlement under Working Load exceeds 12.50 mm
4) Total settlement under 2 x Working Load exceeds 25.00 mm
