Q1(a) Describe proximate and ultimate analysis of coal.
(b) The percentage composition by weight of a sample of coal was found to be as: C = 75%,
H=4%, O=10%, S=2%, N=5% and ash=4%. Calculate the minimum amount of O2 and air
required for complete combustion of 1 Kg of this coal.
Q2. Define lubrication. Explain the mechanism of boundary lubrication.
Q3(a). Name the various methods used for softening of water. Explain the ion-exchange process
of water softening.
(b) The hardness of 5 x 105 lt. of a water sample was completely removed by passing it through
zeolite softener. The softener then required 400 lt. NaCl solution containing 150 g/lt of NaCl for
regeneration. Calculate the hardness of water sample.
