Topic Details
Fast Contact uses a different formulation when compared to the Penalty-based approach and the MPC-
based contact. This is applicable in cases where the only nonlinearities in the model arise due to
Contact and the model includes small deformations and small sliding. There are two approaches to
Fast Contact in OptiStruct, MPC-based and CONTACT/CGAP(G)-based.

MPC-based Fast Contact (old NASTRAN approach)

 Useful for legacy input data files.


 Used to setup linear solution using MPCs , SUPORT, SPC.
 SPOINT’s required to relate SUPORT SPC to MPC entry.
 Activated using PARAM , CDITER

CONTACT/CGAP(G) Based Fast Contact

 Setup the same as the N2S approach. With N2S discretization and no friction.
 Conact interface is defined using CONTACT card
 Activated using PARAM, FASTCONT, YES

Limitation:
 No friction allowed.
 No large displacement nonlinear analysis.
 No nonlinear material.
 No surface to surface discretization.
 No finite sliding.
