Objective:
The objective of this exercise is to familiarize on:
● How empathy and ethnography play a key role in arriving at effective user
interaction model?
● Steps involved in Ethnography research
● How to analyze observations/data?
Assignment 2.1
TastyFood is a hospitality company which is planning to provide tech based solution for
its users to search and discover good restaurants/food options. It is planning to kick
start with Bangalore city and slowly expand to other major cities in India.
It is looking for partner who can support to build collaborative web platform to connect
both consumers and restaurant owners. This should help them to provide information
and reviews on restaurants, facilitate food related events, to conduct polls on various
aspects, to reserve dining tables, attract consumers based on discounts and other
innovative ideas etc.,
Assume you have been involved in finding insights into how consumers are
finding good restaurants and zeroing on specific ones.
Follow below steps to understand customers & their pain in finding and reserving
favorite food/restaurants.
Step 1:
Try to engage as many of your friends/contacts/ teachers/family members etc. as
possible in an ethnographic conversation about their eating habits and way of finding
restaurants. Contact few restaurants owners and understand how do they attract
customers, their goals etc.,
Step 2:
Don't elicit information in an interview but try to work the conversation around eating
habits and way of finding restaurants. Ideally, they should not feel they have been
specifically questioned.
Step 3:
Elicit as much as you can about:
● Whom they contact for finding favourite restaurants?
● What kind of facilities do they expect in restaurants?
● What are their favourite foods?
● What vegetables they would never eat ?
● Restaurants owner's preferences, their hospitality options, offers and discounts
etc.,
● Other interesting perceptions that emerge within all these questions.
Step 4: Visit few restaurants and observe customers and understand their preferences.
Record your observations.
Step 5: Analyze your findings and observations using chart or diagram. Try to construct
some 'value' patterns or classifications from the data you have collected. Put your
thoughts in the similar template as shown below:
