Referencing:
This project requires a substantial amount of research to be carried out; where the expectation is that
each student will read, appreciate and recognise the work of others. The information that you use for
your project submissions will be based on existing literature found in books, websites, academic
articles, etc. all of which must be acknowledged.
For all submitted works, it is a requirement that all used literature is referenced (twice).
In the first instance, the author’s name and the date of the work must be included in the main body of
the text (In-text citation).
In the second instance, the publication details must be included in a reference list at the back of the
document. The reference list should include all relevant details such as the title, author, publisher,
date, page number and the volume of the document.
Correct referencing;
• demonstrates that you have carried out the research yourself
• safeguards you from allegations of plagiarism
• enables the lecturer or other readers to check text against quoted references
• ensures that the work is based on accurate and verifiable information
• allows the lecturer to recognize the students understanding and concepts of the particular
topic
The “Harvard Style” referencing method MUST be used for this project.
Students MUST keep a record of all literature used during the course of your project.
If the submission is not referenced it will be marked 0% and recorded as copied.
Procurement Brief – Forum No.1
As a consequence of the collapse of UK construction company Carillion, Ireland should
move away from Public Private Partnership as a method of procurement - Discuss
(500 words)
Guidelines and Tips:
Please note that this discussion forum is for educational purposes only. Discussion can be expressed
as an exchange / sharing of knowledge which helps us to learn more.
This is a shared learning environment. It is not enough to login and post your own contribution.
Students should also keep in mind that discussion boards are meant to be conversations, where each
post builds on the previous post/comments/responses. My expectation is that you read every posting
and reply in a manner that can lend further insight, and/or offer a different perspective.
Read everything in the discussion thread before posting. This will help you avoid repeating something
someone else has already contributed. Acknowledge the points made with which you agree and
suggest alternatives for those with which you don’t.
Always remember to add something new to the conversation and not repeat something that
someone else has already said. Most importantly, stay on topic. Irrelevant tangents confuse your
peers and make you seem that you don’t know what you are talking about; make sure that every
comment you post stays within the scope of the topic.
Before you post, review your written work and responses to ensure that you’ve conveyed exactly
what you intended, as being misunderstood can be common in these forums. This is an excellent
opportunity to practice your proof-reading, revision, and rewriting skills—valuable assets in the
professional world for which you are now preparing. The best way to test your posts for clarity is to
read them aloud before you upload them; this way, you will be able to see if they make sense.
When writing your post on the topic thread, be ensure that you are specific in your response. Vague
posts/comments/responses should be avoided as they narrow the scope of discussion. Be direct and
informative in your discussion.
Use proper writing style; correct spelling, correct grammatical construction and sentence structure
are expected in every other writing activity associated with academic engagement. Online discussions
are no different. Mixed up sentences and paragraphs reflect on you, so keep this in mind before you
post. Text speak, slang words and other abbreviations have no part in academic or professional
dialogue, the use of emoji’s and shortcuts such as ‘u’ are more appropriate for chatting with your
friends and should be avoided.
Similarly, the use of CAPITALS is discouraged; this is considered as shouting and rude and is not
necessary.
Please remember people are sensitive towards criticism or perceived criticism, keep responses
positive and constructive. Criticism must be constructive, well-meaning, and well articulated.
Respect the opinions of the other posters. If you deem that, you need to disagree, do so respectfully
and acknowledge the valid points in the other posters argument. Acknowledge that others are
entitled to have their own perspective on the issue.
Rants directed at any other contributor are simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The same
goes for profanity. Avoid humour and sarcasm, as they can both easily create misunderstandings and
tension. The academic environment expects higher-order language.
You should base your submissions/opinions with evidence, research, and scholarly articles. You are
expected to support your comments with the literature and you must also include references.
If you read a subsequent posting and feel that it misunderstood your post, give the poster the benefit
of the doubt. Communicating on-line is very difficult. Not everyone has the needed writing expertise
to adequately express themselves.
It’s an ethnically rich and diverse, multi-cultural world in which we live. Use no language that is, or
that could be construed to be, offensive toward others. Racists, sexist, and heterosexist comments
and jokes are unacceptable, as are derogatory and/or sarcastic comments and jokes directed at
religious beliefs, disabilities, and age.
I reserve the right to delete any inappropriate post/comment/response of part of that is not in
accordance with these guidelines. This is a subjective decision; but I will use common sense.
All in all, never say online what you wouldn’t say in real life and to another person’s face.
Participate early and not at the deadline, if everybody participates at the deadline, the quality of
the conversation will be poor where it should be for a thoughtful and informative discussion. It makes
it more difficult to come up with anything fresh that hasn't already been said.
Please ‘sign’ your post by including your name on the post. Word count should also be included in
post.
