Elements of innovation
• Product innovation - Windows vista was replaced by
XP
• Process innovation - Delivery of product E.g. online
banking
• Position innovation - changing the way a product
offering is targeted; E.g. through the introduction of
low cost airlines
• Paradigm innovation - Changing the way
organizations frame what they do E.g. IBM has
changed from being a computer manufacturer into a
consultancy and service company.

Incremental innovation Types of innovation
• Less risky and costly
• More likely to succeed
• Supports consistency and continuity
• Builds on something customers understand
Revolutionary innovation
• Involves “Mega projects” or “do everything”
• Requires heavy investment
• The “unknowns” are greater including market response and
learning curves are far steeper.
• Only usually an option if a matter of survival or the innovation
is known to meet a significant identified need and has
guaranteed commercial viability.
• Revolutionary innovation may not be consistent

Innovation Audit
Drummond & Ensor (1999) identify four key areas
for the innovation audit.
1) The organizational climate - attitude surveys,
metaphorical analysis
2) Current performance - # of products launched,
revenue, profitability
3) Review of policies and practices driving and opposing
innovation - Force field analysis
4) Balance of cognitive styles - Four styles
